Posted May 18, 200619 yr There are several well recognized "masters of the art" of Cincy skyline & building shots on this site, so I'll stick with the 'little' stuff and my 'auto' settings! A thread of some of the more interesting corner stones, corner street signs and some of the more unusual alley names Let's start with corner stones - Queen City Club - where the elite meet to eat Times Star Bldg (bee-utiful) any masons in the house? part of the DaVinci Code? Eva was the daughter of the fellow that began the Salvation Army in England well....they saved the corner stone and from the Cincinnati Union Terminal I love these 'corner street signs' because of their "hidden history" value, they are just really neat. There are nearly none in the CBD, almost all in OTR. I wonder if these are found in other cities and towns, obviously pre-dated the modern street signs. one of the few remaining downtown old street names are not forgotten still selling asses at this corner did you know that magnolia was apparently once 'madison' like this one because of the old german lettering still on this building a little known back street Bremen is now the relatively dangerous 'Republic' street one more from downtown I see these missing on some corners and wonder whatever happened to the signs.. and finally - just a few of the more amusing alley signs ok - hardly an alley, but had to include the actual intersection is no where NEAR here german this is just so 'urban' to me...

May 18, 200619 yr Great stuff once again! Bravo! I love the cornerstone on the Times Star Building. (Yeah, big surprise ;) ) It amazes me the amount of old conduits and wires that crisscross old buildings. I remember the first time I noticed street names on a building in Hamilton, I was quite surprised.
May 18, 200619 yr Wonderful intimate detail! I've never seen alley signs like those. The cornerstone on the Times-Star Building is pretty fabulous. In Fort Wayne, the street names were often embossed in the sidewalks near the curbs at intersections, in addition to signs on buildings and/or posts. Just about all the sidewalk signs disappeared as the sidewalks at intersections were torn up and replaced with ADA-compliant ones.
May 18, 200619 yr ^There was some speculation around here that you were an alien, I guess that has now been verified.
May 18, 200619 yr I took some shots similar to these. See "Cincinnati: By the Date" http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4096.0 Great minds think alike . . .
May 18, 200619 yr ^There was some speculation around here that you were an alien, I guess that has now been verified. Yes, and I even grew some more thumbs... I think last time it was 8 or 9.
May 18, 200619 yr I believe that there is one of those corner street signs at 9th and Main. Sorry no picture but its right above B/G AKA Main St. Diner.
May 18, 200619 yr You're not the only one who picks up on corner signs... I'm assuming this corner addition was recent Newport has them as well. You have to look carefully to notice this one along Broad St (is it still there? It might be on a building that got torn down) I guess Westerville glued these onto the side of the buildings And out yonder.... Lancaster, Pa Bryn Mawr, Pa (Philly Main Line). Trust me, there is a corner sign there. I just wasn't close enough (using an automatic camera in the middle of rush hour) And I'm sure there others in many of our other cities
May 19, 200619 yr Hey I have a question for anyone who has ever been inside the St. Louis church... am I the only one that has been freaked out by a devil looking figure in the marble? Anyone know what I'm talking about? Nice pics by the way. We do have some interesting street names.
May 19, 200619 yr Hey I have a question for anyone who has ever been inside the St. Louis church... am I the only one that has been freaked out by a devil looking figure in the marble? Anyone know what I'm talking about? I've been in that church many times (in both chapels), but I can't picture anything like this in there. Where is it? I'm curious. I'm going to have to check this out.
May 19, 200619 yr If you go to their mass look straight ahead...there's a marble wall or maybe it's just marble trim. My friend noticed the same thing--I guess because the human brain automaticallyl looks for face formations and It definately looked similar to a devil with horns even though it was just the design of the marble.
