Posted May 20, 200619 yr Here are some photos of downtown Columbia as well as the University of South Carolina (Go Cocks!) which is adjacent to the CBD. Columbia is the capital and largest city in South Carolina. According to Wikipedia, its estimated population is 121,000 with 690,000 living in the metro. The city is pretty old and was actually a planned city. Many of the streets were designed to be broad boulevards and avenues under the thinking that misquitos wouldn't be able to fly from one side of the street to another. Unfortunately, very little of the original buildings still exist since Gen. Sherman burned the place down-- and yes, people are still bitter about that one to this day. Here is a bad shot of part of the skyline taken from a car: They actually have a downtown grocery store in a renevated Confederate printing press building Cornell Arms apartment building An interesting Episcopal church The statehouse with its copper roof Looking at downtown from the statehouse lawn. When the state was pressured about the Confederate flag flying atop the statehouse dome, the legislature decided to move it to a prominent position next to the street :whip: The tallest building in SC (same tall one in the first photo) Now to Main Street's buildings: Thought these were interesting-- the small white one is an old arcade, the raised median is where the streetcar used to run The further down Main St. you go, you start to see this kind of stuff-- I think they are planning to put condos in some of the upper floors though Moving into neighborhoods adjacent to downtown: Now the university: My old dorm building-- it actually has a working revolving restaurant on top That's it from the Palmetto State-- now back in good ol' Ohio :-)
May 20, 200619 yr excellent tour. center city and the towers are not so hot, but the lower buildings around town look very nice. the old streetcar path is still there too for people to wise up and revive it. as for old gen. sherman, well, they brought it on themselves. move on people its over. holding grudges gives you ulcers. as a cleveland sports fan i should know!
