Posted May 21, 200619 yr if you wanna take a subway ride in the bronx this thread is for you! i had always thought some of you might like to see this so i finally took my camera to work recently. these shots are from a ride on the 6 train after it comes out of the ground as an elevated or el train in the bronx. its only a few stops going up and coming back, from the first station out of the ground at whitlock avenue to my destination westchester square (the line continues on as an el to pelham bay park from the square). fyi here are the stops we go past: Westchester Square-East Tremont Avenue, Zerega Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, Parkchester-East 177th Street, St. Lawrence Avenue, Morrison-Sound View Avenue, Elder Avenue and Whitlock Avenue. note this route is familiar to fans of the movies "the warriors" and "taking of pelham 1,2,3." also note if you are a visiting railfan, the whitlock stop is an amazing place to jump off and take some pics. heading north, coming out after the hunts point station. looking west as the 6 train goes north this area is kind of the flats of the bronx sorry about any glare, smudge and scrachitti this one almost looks like bucolic suburbia -- hehe! christo high school! that brutalist early 70's building is lehman hs, it spans right over the highway! at the square, nice mural in the station freedom is quite a bargain here! a look under under westchester avenue at east tremont avenue ok, time to head back now.... we are looking north waiting on the southbound 6 train at the square down below on the train heading south this time we are looking eastward this is parkchester & you can see I-95 is a parking lot below omg, greenspace? a ballpark? heading back to the last el stop whitlock avenue now this may surprise you but this is one of my spouse's fav spots in the whole city... what? why? because the abc carpet&home warehouse is behind that auto parts shop -- ha. note the ancient commuter rail station below a look back as we pull into whitlock station heading underground now *** thats it from a ride up above the bronx **
May 22, 200619 yr Thanks so much for the tour! Some great density in those shots. I remember thumbing through a New York Then & Now book from the 1970s or so, and it's amazing how some of those areas sprouted up from countryside to high-density urban neighborhoods in less than a decade. In that span, a lot of the places in the book went from farms to looking like this: And, had Cleveland built subways down Euclid and St. Clair, as the Van Swerigens proposed before the Great Depression killed their plans (and them), I suspect those areas would have looked something like this.... Thanks again for the terrific tour. Sometimes I'd like to get out of here and move to those kinds of areas, either in Chicago or NYC. But the area where I live in Lakewood is fairly close to that kind of density. All we need now is rail service.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

May 24, 200619 yr ^what on earth brought you down there? mrnyc - that was great! thanks for putting that together! was is up with those double-decker patios? are they just what they appear? apartments etc? thanks -- it was just a matter of remembering to take the camera with me to one of my work sites. i always meant to but somehow never got around to it until last week. maybe i'll do it again on another 'el' route? those patios are just what you think. old double apts with patios up and down for each apt. some may be owned i dk. beside the balconys, they are also kind of unusual and what i would call 'eastern queens-like' for that low in the bronx, which is otherwise mostly the usual six story walk-up apts and pj towers w/ scattered row housing you can see in the other pics around it. btw for visiting railfans there is even better than this. imo thee very best nyc 'el' train ride is the front car of any jmz subway starting from the last stop in jamaica, queens and riding into manhattan. stunning old urban views that go on forever and still even knock me out when i ride it. guess i'll have to take the camera along on that one sometime!
May 24, 200619 yr Nice tour! Thanks for the tip on the ABC carpet and home warehouse...is it worth checking out? The regular stores have some great stuff, but they are expensive!
