April 22Apr 22 Full disclosure: I’m not a “map” guy, but I do enjoy (and previously worked in) public transportation. Would love to hear folks’ thoughts on this, but keep in mind: this is just something I did for fun. Over the weekend, I randomly came across http://metromapmaker.com and it got me thinking about Cincinnati’s system map (which, if you go to Government Square, good luck making any sense of that (thankfully, Google Transit Directions exists)). The idea was to try and make something a bit simpler with visual hallmarks similar to what you might find on “traditional” metro systems in other cities. In some cases, I thought this worked out well — like on the Southbank Shuttle which has a hard-to-understand route (but I think this makes it a bit easier to understand). I also think it shows some things that a lot of people may not realize - like how the 2X Airporter also serves as a pretty reliable and easy way to connect with Florence, KY and not solely as an airport connection. It also reveals some overall system flaws while glossing over others: - In most cases, the Gov Square BRT stops will be more convenient than the RTC (even though it has “connections” with other lines. - This map implies that Metro+ is some sort of rapid line (while kind of hand waving the fact that Metro+ is actually just an hour long bus ride that’s less convenient than the #4). I had to take some liberties with names, etc. and my knowledge of mapmaking/wayfinding design is very limited, so I’d love to hear thoughts. Let me know if the graphic is too low res, I’m kind of limited by what the free website offers (you should be able to open it in a new window). Edited April 22Apr 22 by Gordon Bombay
