Posted May 24, 200619 yr While I was in Ohio for the weekend, my family went up to Delaware for the first time since I graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University a year ago. The occasion was the Delaware Arts Festival. Meanwhile, I of course got some photos... Yeah, festivities of the artistic variety going on here Fair wanderers Comestibles What fun The Bun's sign! Sandusky Street I spent the better part of 2004-2005 wondering what was being built here. Justice Who can resist? Good question Happy fun sidewalk time Windows! Back to Bun's Since I felt my existing collection lacking, I insisted on getting some residential pictures. I'm no architecture buff, but I think Delaware has a pretty nice collection of old homes. Here are just a few... The old jail... I forget what it is now Got any broken shoes? I've been told this is the oldest building in Delaware (1821) And of course some Ohio Wesleyan photos... Ooh, shiny! That'll do for this time!
May 24, 200619 yr If you had stopped in the sewing shop (The Stitch Stops Here) next to Buns Restaurant, you would of met my mom. :-o Didn't see anyone that I would recongnize in any of those photos. Don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. :|
May 24, 200619 yr Neat photos! I'm a big fan of small-town festivals. Beautiful historic homes, and an attractive campus.
May 24, 200619 yr Delaware has such a great downtown and housing stock, and your photos are proof of that. Unfortunately, like so many other quaint old towns near larger cities, the majority of Delaware is now overrun with homogenous subdivisions and strip malls. Oh well, at least the old town is being well preserved!

Oh well, at least the old town is being well preserved! Delaware isn't overrun with strip malls.....yet. But the the preservation of the old town center was a long hard fight that hasn't finished yet.
May 24, 200619 yr Regarding this shot: ...back in the mid-90's, when the Counting Crows album August and Everything After was big, and the song Murder of One was getting radio play, a friend and I walked past the Delta Delta Delta house at Indiana University, and, in my best Adam Duritz voice, I sang "Change, change, change..." Ach, I was proud of that one... Very nice pictures! And that sure seems window-intensive for a former jail...maybe they have a basement and a sub-basement where the cells were?
May 24, 200619 yr It's a pity it's surrounded by former Big Bears and Culver's. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 24, 200619 yr I've never been to Delaware, OH but it appears to be very well maintained. OAN, I absolutely love this bldg:

Don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. :| Yes, we had to stop there, because I'm a huge cross stitch fanatic (very old fashioned of me, no?). It was one of my favorite stores back when I was in college there, and there was no way I could bypass it when I was in town again.
May 27, 200619 yr those homes sure are tidy... jail bldg is extra cool. Delaware has a nice vibe. Thx for the walk-about!
May 30, 200619 yr What's interesting about downtown Delaware is that just a few years ago, there was an almost 45% vacancy rate. The city hired a new development director who keyed in on downtown and the vacany rate is now almost 0%. It is a very alive and vibrant downtown that refused to be "Wal-marted".
May 30, 200619 yr ^ Interesting to hear those numbers. On that note, my sister and I were taking stock of all the downtown businesses that were not there a year ago. I've seen businesses come and go in downtown Delaware, but happily there do seem to be more coming than going. Oh, and thanks for stopping by the thread, folks!
May 30, 200619 yr I am sure that the new development director played a role, but the true heroes in downtown Delaware are a handful of "preservation entrepreneurs" that have been willing to do creative projects. Places like the "Old Bag of Nails" take real vision to transform. Together these owners own probably ten buildings downtown, and are continuing to do some amazing things. I know them personally -- they are classy people with sharp business minds. Now if they can just keep the county from doing something stupid on the north edge of downtown...
