Posted May 24, 200619 yr Here's a little something to get people excited for this Saturday's subway tours... Stonebridge, from midway across the Detroit-Superior Bridge: The view east on the bridge: Why don't we have more of these old school lamps on the bridges? Bridges, bridges, bridges! (can you see the ship coming in under the lift bridge on the right?) Jacknife, with Warehouse District and Flats East Bank housing in the distance: A closeup of the dense cluster of housing rising up from the East Bank: Looking north across Settler's Landing, Old River Road and W. 10th Street: W. 10th Street, more housing density! Looking back west from the foot of the bridge towards Stonebridge: A shot of Downtown offices and the Convention Center from Willard Park: New ticker on the Idea Center Building and new awnings that now line several PHSQ storefronts: Around 5:00 on a Monday...
May 24, 200619 yr That is awfully pretty - especially this shot: ...as you know, I'm a RiverViewer! Looks like a kick-ass place to do that from...very nicely done!

May 24, 200619 yr Thanks ya'll! I'll be posting more from today a bit later. Two days of sunshine in a row and I'm taking full advantage!
May 24, 200619 yr I love this bridge in Cleveland.....very jealous. I also enjoy some of the old warehouse bldgs that have been converted
May 26, 200619 yr Nice shots Mister Good Day. Great color and resolution. I just wish (save the last shot) downtown didn't constantly have that neutron bomb thing going on. Seems like you were the only one to partake of the nice weather. Oh well...
May 26, 200619 yr Well, I am guilty of taking pictures of buildings and cityscapes and not intentionally grabbing shots of people, but you're right that there should be many more coincidental crowds in those shots. I am constantly disheartened by the lack of activity in our beautiful parks...like Settler's Landing and Willard Park, which had a total of four people using them while I rode by. Three of the four were asleep on the pavement. On the upside, several people rode and walked by me on the bridge and the next day, there were about a half-dozen people taking advantage of the beautiful weather at Settler's Landing.
May 30, 200619 yr Nice pics. Glad to see people here are noticing the neutron-bomb effect. One thing I noticed in the late 80s and early 90s is that the city and a number of downtown businesses would sponsor big and small events at city parks (Party in the Park, Riverfest, etc.). Some of these could be less-than-daily small events, and might even be a small revenue generator for the city (such as a permit fee for a large gathering -- can pay for police/service department overtime and so on). Even infrequent events will help raise the profile of these parks among downtown office workers and area residents who otherwise won't venture outside of their "comfort zones." Get folks out of their routines. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 31, 200619 yr ^This was a big point of discussion at the Young Professionals Advisory Committee last week. There are things going on right now that fit the bill (Parkworks daytime and evening events, Sparx in the City, etc.), but they haven't yet made the impact that we need. We can build from these, though, and hopefully create a non-stop vibe Downtown that clicks in people's minds, telling them that they can pop in anytime and there will be something going on.
May 31, 200619 yr ^ This is an absolutely beautiful view of the Flats area. I could easily imagine that on a postcard or a tourism guide. Great job on all the pics MGD!!
May 31, 200619 yr There are things going on right now that fit the bill (Parkworks daytime and evening events, Sparx in the City, etc.), but they haven't yet made the impact that we need. These are great starting points but they don't happen frequently enough. Something needs to happen weekly, and on the same night of the week every week, so people know about it -- a lesson from Philly.
May 31, 200619 yr From http://www.cleveland.com/sparx/ Sparx Street Beats is an energetic performance art series that takes place LIVE on various open spaces of downtown Cleveland, from June 1st - September 16, 2006. Every week the sidewalks come alive as selected performers present charming, mesmerizing and colorful shows to passersby, making the experience of exploring the city more pleasant and exciting. Because all acts are encouraged to promote their upcoming performances, a gig through the Sparx Street Beats program becomes more than just an earned wage. It's an opportunity for professional ensembles to market their artistic product to new audiences. In return, visitors, residents, and merchants of Cleveland are exposed to high-quality performing arts from our region in a very accessible, non-intimidating way. From June 1-September 16th, a total of 28 FREE Street Beats Concerts with over 100 different performers will take place on the open sidewalks next to restaurant patios and retail merchants. Themed shows will feature a combination of professional dancers and musicians. Happy Hour concerts will take place on Thursdays from 5:30pm-7:30pm either on E. 4th Street in the Gateway District or in The Warehouse Districts. The lunchtime concert series will take place Fridays from 12pm-2pm on Star Plaza in the Theater District or in front of Tower City on Public Square.
May 31, 200619 yr ^ I know this is just one example and it's only during the summertime, but it's a good start. If things like this can get a good rep and attendance, then they'll expand as more people find out about them and attend or get involved in other ways.
May 31, 200619 yr What do they mean a non-intimidating way? Are they talking about intimidation about going to a venue to see a performer or artist, or are they implying that unsanctioned street performance are intimidating? I think that what downtown really needs is to allow unsanctioned performances to occur. Really vibrant towns have freelance buskers going at it all day and into the evening.
May 31, 200619 yr it's only during the summertime Oops, that's the part I forgot to mention. We need something all year round. And we need something that lasts longer than 2 hours, and that involves downtown merchants staying open late in tandem with the event. It should be from after work until 10 at least. but it's a good start. Agreed.

June 1, 200619 yr That, buskers, mimes, those guys who paint themselves silver than act like robots, whatever. Cleveland needs mimes, dammit!
