And as part of today's Bike to Work Day, the mayor will unveil his proposal for a 2 1/2-mile walking and biking route through a South Toledo neighborhood at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Mayor Finkbeiner hopes to discuss the proposal with residents of South Toledo's Beverly and Harvard Terrace neighborhoods in the gym at Holy Trinity, 1825 Glendale Ave. More at link above:
May 25, 200619 yr Sounds promising. There are always NIMBYs who fear a bikeway will give the "lower classes" access to their private paradise and bring crime and graffiti. I don't know of any cases where that has happened, and in many cases it's those same NIMBYs whose property values increase the most after the trail becomes popular. Now and then I hear murmurings about a greenway along the Maumee Valley between Toledo and Fort Wayne. I've been as far as Defiance and Independence Dam via mostly back roads, and it would be wonderful to be able to make the trip on a safe, scenic, tree-shaded path.

The 2 1/2-mile path to connect the Beverly and Harvard Terrace neighborhoods is part of a plan to spend $800,000 from the capital improvement fund for new walking-biking paths in South Toledo and Point Place. The plan is to be heard June 15 by City Council. People on the bus barraged the staff with questions on details such as the path's route, traffic visibility, and path markings. The South Toledo path would follow Beechway, Wildwood, and Harvard boulevards from Copland Boulevard to Walbridge Park. More at link above:

East Toledo businessman Rick Rudnicki, chairman of the board of River East Economic Revitalization Corp., who led a news conference in front of Waite High School yesterday, said an East Toledo bike route has been in city plans for years. He said it would start at the Miami Street entrance to International Park, follow the former Olive Branch rail line through the Marina District to the Craig Memorial Bridge, then loop back to Front Street by way of Ravine Park and the high school. June 16, 200618 yr Finkbeiner administration drops plans for South Toledo bike trail BLADE STAFF Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner’s administration announced today it is abandoning its proposal for a controversial 2.5-mile bike path through South Toledo neighborhoods. “We’ve heard a lot of public comment. The current alignment will not serve the community or the administration as well as we hoped,” said Don Moline, assistant chief operating officer. Immediately after Mr. Moline made the announcement during a city council parks committee meeting this morning, applause erupted from most of the approximately 50 people in the audience. Many of them were residents from the neighborhoods who have opposed the proposed bike trail in their neighborhoods. August 8, 200618 yr From the 8/8/06 Toledo Blade: MAP Finkbeiner supports East Toledo bike path Work could be done by winter, city says Mayor Carty Finkbeiner threw his support yesterday behind a plan to pave a 1.7-mile bike path in International Park, at a cost to the city of $383,000. Mr. Finkbeiner said the plan is part of his commitment to build 20 miles of bike/hike trails over the next four years to boost physical fitness in Toledo. The path, if approved by City Council during its meeting today, would follow a former rail bed parallel to Miami Street behind International Park and the Docks restaurant complex from Navarre Avenue, south of the Anthony Wayne Bridge, to Main Street. The path would then loop back along the river to the S.S. Willis B. Boyer museum ship. More at: http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060808/NEWS16/608080422/-1/NEWS
February 10, 200718 yr City is making it easy for you to hike or bike 5 new paths are created By TOM TROY BLADE STAFF WRITER New ribbons of asphalt were added to Toledo's public landscape this year - not the paved surfaces used by Jeeps, Hummers, and Harley-Davidsons, but the kind favored by Schwinns, Rollerblades, and Adidas. Toledo's choices of biking/hiking paths expanded this year with the addition of five new trails in city parks. The paths only marginally contribute to the long-term plan for a network of bike routes in Toledo, but they do provide new opportunities for neighborhood outdoor exercise. January 13, 20187 yr EDITORIAL Bridge to our past 3 January 2018 The Wood County Port Authority has a bridge to sell — give away, actually. The community or park system that agrees to take it can play a part in preserving an important aspect of our region’s history. The Ohio Department of Transportation is moving ahead with plans to remove what once was the Toledo Terminal Railroad’s Upper River Bridge, a decaying former railroad bridge over the Maumee River that parallels the Ohio Turnpike. Built in 1902, the bridge is no longer usable, either for trains or a bike/pedestrian trail. CSX Transportation conveyed it to the port authority in 2011. But the bridge has an interesting and significant history, which has led to a plan that could land it a new home where it can be appreciated by generations to come. http://www.toledoblade.com/Editorials/2018/01/03/Bridge-to-our-past.html

January 13, 20187 yr That would be an awesome bridge conversion. Sure would. It's a rare swing bridge, designed to let sailing ships unload at the ports of Perrysburg and Maumee. There should be money somewhere to save this in its current location and for trail use, but...none found yet.
March 6, 20187 yr From late last month: Bike share coming to downtown Toledo. Mayor Kapszukiewicz outlines his plans for growth BySarah Elms | BLADE STAFF WRITER Published on Feb. 22, 2018 | Updated 2:19 p. m The mayor wants to see Grassy Island become an accessible park and said his administration has started talking with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make that a reality. He also commended Metroparks Toledo for its willingness to partner with the city and announced a new bike share program he said will take shape soon. Metroparks Toledo, through a $256,000 grant, will buy 100 bicycles and 20 stations for use downtown and in adjacent neighborhoods. Once the equipment is installed, the city will maintain the program, Mr. Kapszukiewicz said. “I hope to swipe my card in West Toledo, ride a bicycle downtown, park it, and at the end of the day, I will have a choice of whether I want to take the bus back or ride a different bicycle home,” said the mayor, who takes a Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority bus to and from work once a week. He also announced a new “innovation partnership” with the University of Toledo to work on becoming a “smart city.” The partnership will create a plan to assess street conditions, improve outdoor lighting, and install free Wi-Fi throughout the city. http://www.toledoblade.com/Politics/2018/02/22/Mayor-Kapszukiewicz-outlines-his-plans-for-a-successful-city-in-Thursday-address.html
April 6, 20196 yr A few updates from the last year: Metroparks approves multi-purpose trail for Oak Openings corridor region: Metroparks Toledo hired a Maumee contractor Friday to construct the first phase of a planned 13-mile walking-biking trail through a future wildlife corridor to connect Secor and Oak Openings Preserve parks. The bid of $726,647 prepared by G6 Infrastructure LLC for the 1.6-mile section of the trail between Secor and Wiregrass Lake Metropark in western Lucas County was accepted by park commissioners at a special meeting. (Toledo Blade, 1/27/2018) Bike paths coming to Kilburn Road leading to Secor Metropark RYAN DUNN The Blade AUG 22, 2018 A multi-million dollar revamping of Kilburn Road in Richfield Township will add bicycle lanes leading to and from Secor Metropark. Lucas County officials are progressing on a roughly $3.9-million project that essentially reconstructs the three-mile road from Central Avenue to Sylvania-Metamora Road. It brings increased shoulder size, five-foot paved bike lanes in both directions, and drainage. This is a high-speed and heavily used road that benefits from the work, said Mike Pniewski, chief deputy engineer. ToleGO: Bike-sharing debuts in downtown Toledo JAY SKEBBA The Blade OCT 17, 2018 The long-awaited bike-share program in Toledo made its downtown debut Tuesday, where dozens of cyclists went for a spin around Middlegrounds Metropark. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, members of City Council, and other officials and business leaders participated in the ceremony.

Yep, bridge is gone. I stopped by a few times to watch crews tear it down. I'm looking forward to an innovative design for the pedestrian-cycling bridge that should be coming next.
