Toledo to build cruise ship terminal

Port authority board OKs funds for Marina District project

It's been nine years in the making, but Toledo will start designing and building a Marina District passenger terminal this summer to receive Great Lakes cruise ships and passengers with money to spend.

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority board of directors approved spending $611,000 to match $2.45 million in federal money the port started receiving in 1997.

The city of Toledo has budgeted $1.5 million for the project.

The board also approved plans to hire Poggemeyer Design Group for $236,250 for design and construction management.

Neat. I didn't realize that there was a resurgence in Great Lakes cruises.

They were a big thing in the era before cheap international air travel; maybe increasing energy costs will bring them back. Some Great Lakes cities had a considerable tourist industry built around them.

I wonder if there are any budget-priced freighter trips available on the Great Lakes yet. To me visiting gritty industrial ports and seeing commerce and industry at work would be more interesting than a socializing-and-entertainment-based cruise.

Well, that's nice that Toledo (or any city in Ohio) is building (or atleast attempting to build) a cruise ship terminal.  Now Tony Packo's can have more business!  Take THAT, Sylvania!!!

^I misread your line as "They talk different, act different, park different" and thought that was absolutely hilarious...

Now if they can just add some apartment towers and retail areas in the plan we'd be in good shape.

Terminal in the works to serve passengers on lakes cruise ships

Sunday, June 04, 2006

Associated Press

Toledo- City officials are hoping to lure more tourist dollars with a terminal that will receive Great Lakes cruise ship passengers.

The terminal, which officials plan to begin designing and building this summer, will feature shops and a restaurant.

It's been in the works for nine years. The go-ahead came recently when the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority's board of directors approved spending the $611,000 required to match federal grants worth $2.45 million.

The board also hired Poggemeyer Design Group to oversee the design and construction of the terminal, which also will have a U.S. Customs office and boater amenities such as showers and restrooms.

from the civilized pleasures of Chicago and Thunder Bay to the cliffs, canyons and waterfalls that lie just beyond the shore.

...the civilized pleasures of Thunder Bay?

I think its nuts Cleveland doesn't try to capitalize on this, especially since it has the Rock Hall right on the water, and this cruise biz seems to cater to Euros...for whom Rock-n-Roll is part of their image of the USA.

Shame on Cleveland for not trying to capitalize on this. We have the $7 million in federal funds for building the ferry terminal next to Cleveland Browns Stadium, and the Lake Shore Electric Railway is willing to build a spur into the terminal to operate historic trolleys (real ones) between the ferry terminal and Tower City Center. What's the problem here folks?

Are we so focused on the ferry that we're losing sight of attracting a mix of water-borne passenger traffic from a variety of lake ships? Besides, who knows when the ferry will actually start operating? The cruise ships are happening now!

Ship terminal work begins

Maumee River site to lure cruise vessels, ferries

By DAVID PATCH

Ten years have passed since the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority disclosed plans for a ferry and cruise-ship terminal on the Maumee River, but construction has finally - and formally - begun.

With foundation piles for the 15,600-square-foot, $3.2 million facility in the ground and a construction pump growling behind them, dignitaries officially broke ground yesterday on what they hope will become a magnet for tourist dollars. The terminal also will house an office for the adjoining Glass City Marina.

"This has been a decade in the making," U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) acknowledged during a news conference before the groundbreaking.
