W.E.B. DuBois Academy cites cut in state funding

BY JENNIFER MROZOWSKI | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The Ohio Department of Education is reducing the W.E.B. DuBois Academy's future funding and asking the school to pay back as much as $3 million, an amount it can't afford, school superintendent Wilson Willard said Friday.

The school's board voted Friday morning to close June 30 unless the state gives it some relief, Willard said.

...

I do love the idea of a summer break, but you've gotta wonder just how much opportunity is lost by taking those three months off academically.  I know how much taking a couple weeks away from our language class really stunts progress - I can't imagine how much we'd have to relearn with three months away.  I'd think the state would want to fund this just to get real world data for any future efforts to go to year 'round schooling...

I do not understand asking for a payback.  Of course that would ruin a school.  If the state pays you, then it is unfair for the state to ask for the money back.

I see this as an example of Ohio's backwardness.  Here we have a dedicated group of folks who've put together an innovative education program that actually works at educating the most at-risk children.  And now it is being suffocated by a one-size-fits-all funding system.

How effective will this school be now?  Probably not very.  I do applaud them for trying, though, but I hope their desire to stay open doesn't short-change the kids.

OVER-THE-RHINE - One of the state's most successful charter schools will cut its budget so it can remain open, reversing a decision last month to close for the upcoming school year.

W.E.B. DuBois Academy, which holds the state's top rating of "Excellent" for student achievement, eliminated 18 jobs, totaling about $700,000 in salaries and benefits.

I hope they will be able to continue their success with 40% less staff.

The board of W.E.B. DuBois Academy has developed a plan to get the embattled charter school off probation for academic and governance problems.

THE ENQUIRER

W.E.B. DuBois Academy's improvement plan has been accepted by its sponsor, but the school will remain on probation at least through March.
