Posted May 30, 200619 yr This appeared in the 5/21/06 San Diego Union-Tribune. Those of you who check out Columbus RetroMetro likely saw it. Columbus? Hip and happening? Yes, it's true Ohio capital sheds image as a Podunk town By Laura Walcher May 21, 2006 Cow Town? Nope. NOW Town. These days, Columbus, Ohio, qualifies for heavy-duty respect and guaranteed never-boring fun for visitors. In one three-day visit to Ohio's lively capital, we took in the following: a breath-taking Dale Chihuli glass exhibit at Franklin Park Conservatory; a moving and inspiring reading by former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky; the Columbus appearance of Prince in a jam-packed, state-of-the-art arena on the Ohio State University campus; a Phoenix Theater for Children's performance (based on Cherokee legends) in the State office building's distinguished Vern Riffe Center; and by far not least, Columbus' annual community “Vaud-Villities” show, which showcased the impressive talents of a few hundred singers/dancers since 1943. May 31, 200619 yr ^ Yeah, I saw this, but the one thing that threw me off was that we have the largest Amish population. Did all of them just say "The hell with this!" and pack up their bags to move to Columbus from northeast Ohio? I never heard of that. This city certainly has come a long way. Just remember that not all that long ago the Short North was only a couple of blocks and there was no Arena District.

May 31, 200619 yr Woah, that's cool! Columbus seems to have the buzz going. I hope it infects Cleveland :)
May 31, 200619 yr San Diego is a nice city and all, but It's not like the people are any better then people from any where else. But what do these people think? Like they are somehow better than Columbus? San Diego is not that important enough or any other city expecting me to bow down before them for giving me good press..lol Tha'ts just my take. ;) Was this in the travel section?
May 31, 200619 yr gays (the third largest enclave in the country, after San Francisco and New York) :wtf:
May 31, 200619 yr ...and Lake Erie was crystal clear with wide beaches along its entire coast. Lake Erie was never crystal clear. It is a shallow, stormy lake with a muddy, silty bed. It was also extremely full of life before settled by the white man. That tends to lead to lots of organic matter floating in the water. I have actually heard that Lake Erie is unnaturally clear (not clean) right now because the zebra mussels act as filters.
May 31, 200619 yr What always puzzled me about Lake Erie is why there are no large (or even small) cities on the Canadian side. Not even a Lorain or Sandusky. @@@@@@@@@@ But nice to see some good press on Cols, which really deserves it, too. Though I agree with Dffly about that "third largest gay enclave in the US" comment...well..maybe for Ohio its the gay mecca, but I think it probably isn't even that for the Midwest.
June 3, 200619 yr here's hoping Blackwell wins this November! Well, I do hope he wins...at losing... "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 3, 200619 yr here's hoping Blackwell wins this November! I'm confused. Do you want him to win just because or do you want him to win to scare gay people from Columbus? Here's a funny Blackwell-related story. My parents are firm Republicans, but they are voting for Strickland this fall because in their town, one of the local Republican bosses fought the city through the courts to put a massive, practically billboard-sized "Blackwell for Governor" sign in his front yard. I guess before the city ordinance said you could only put up the normal-sized signs. Anyway, this seemed symbolic of the group's governing style, and I was happy that it's going to come back to bite them, at least a little bit.
June 3, 200619 yr What always puzzled me about Lake Erie is why there are no large (or even small) cities on the Canadian side. Not even a Lorain or Sandusky. @@@@@@@@@@ thats easy, it's because there are relatively no people in canada. that will change at some point in the future i am sure.

June 3, 200619 yr Yeah, I find the gay claim preposterous as well. Are there any numbers to back that up?
June 4, 200619 yr i want him to win just because. i dont hate gay people. although i may not approve of their lifestyle, just as some may not approve of me being a conservative Christian, gay people are free to live as they want and are entitled to their own opinion.
June 4, 200619 yr ^And if I voted for someone who said conservative Christians are dumber than farm animals because even they don't believe in dead people rising from the dead and flying into the sky or the fact that that same person made sure Christians were treated unequally under the law, why that wouldn't mean I hate them. They're entitled to their own opinion, afterall. I'm sorry, but could you at least apply some reason outside of the realm of religion? Just because you're religious doesn't mean you have to be totally irrational. I hope you see that supporting Blackwell just negates your claim of tolerance towards gay people and that wanting to give someone the power to govern our entire state "just because" is not a good reason. If you really don't know, you don't need to vote. I'll also add that those who don't approve of you being a conservative Christian don't try to pass anti-Christian legislation or even introduce it for that matter. That's the American way.
