Ironton, Ohio

population: 11,211. seat of lawrence county

on the ohio river, it is the state's most southern city.

it was the world's largest maker of pig iron(crude iron cast in blocks), but was named for being on the Iron railroad. they have a lot of furnaces as tourist attractions.

Waverly = Ohio's armpit.

I visited this little town back when I was in high school and man, what a dump. I see it hasn't changed much from the time I went there. Cool photos as always though. You're almost done!

I believe the state's most southern city is South Point. I am not sure, but I believe the last time I was down there, that is what the sign said.

you're right, South Point is Ohio's southern most city. It's hard to believe that Lawrence county has over 60,000 people considering it doesn't have a major city like a Portsmouth or Athens.

There used to be an awesome ski resort near Waverly, but it closed down a few years ago....it had the best slopes in Ohio.

actually south point is more south than ironton, but is only a village. ironton is the southernmost ohio city by the 5000 people make a city law (south point has 3,000 something.)

Wow...Ironton looks pretty rough. And Waverly is just sad.

hey thanks for the info. summit street

Downtown Ironton is looking pretty worn and I hope to the powers that be that things turn around for them. The town itself, well certain areas have beautiful homes and churches, lots of trees. It's my understanding that they're currently updating the high school.

Nice pictures of Waverly. The only places I've seen there are the places along 23 as I drove up to Columbus

ohh and yes... South Point is the southernmost "village", Coal Grove is next, but also a village, then Ironton would be the southernmost town/city. But thanks to the ethanol plant and the industrial village, South Point is growing.
