TOLEDO

The tallest non-church building ever demolished was the 11-story Hotel Waldorf. It was torn down during the massive Seagate redevelopment project of the late 1970's and 1980's. The hotel was replaced by the hideous 5-story KeyBank Building (aka upside-down pyramid building) and part of Promenade Park.

The hotel was considered the most luxurious in Toledo and its location on Water Street gave its guests great views of the Maumee River. The hotel also had an opulent rooftop garden.

CINCINNATI

The tallest in Cincy that I know of is Sander Hall.  This was a dorm on UC's campus, I believe it has become known as the tallest building to be imploded in North America.  The building was 297 ft, 27 stories, & completed in 1971 then demolished in 1991 (didnt last too long).

Here is a link to view video of the implosion:

An old hospital in Memphis were Elvis died was just imploded this year. I am not sure how tall it was, but I believe it took the crown as the largest building to be imploded.

Cleveland...

I think that the old Western Reserve Building (if that is the correct name) was imploded to make way for the Sohio Building/BP Building.

UncleRando, I'm not correcting you, but in search for the tallest...I remember a thread about 6 months ago containing an aerial from  CincinnatiKid of 1985 downtown when the Carew's Electric Garage still existed. Someone posted a link that indicated it was the tallest building demolished in Ohio. Maybe someone can help on that one.

BTW, I can remember watching the demolishion of Sander Hall when I was quite young.

Good catch - I am not sure the method of demolition.  The structure was 342 ft, and I am still trying to figure out how an electric garage works but it sounds cool.  Here is the link: http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=199656

^Well, it is the tallest building in Ohio ever to be demolished, so I'm sure there are photos somewhere.  I just remember it being hideous.

It can be seen in this picture.  This photo was taken by Larry Stulz in 1988.

my homeboy friend who lives in brooklyn lived in sander hall at uc. he said they would have all these crazy fires drills all night long because of bad wiring and stuff and would have to exit the building at 3:00am. i remember it was kind of dumpy inside, but i guess it was a lot worse off than it looked. it finally got condemed. tearing it down was a great move for uc, but otoh tearing down those buildings around public square and the warehouse district in cleveland.....stoopidest moves - bah!

Sander Hall did hold the title of tallest to be demolished in the US for quite a while, it has since been surpassed.  I was there for the implosion, it was very cool.  The building was already closed when I got to UC, but one night me and a buddy found an open door and climbed to the top. The stairways were completely dark, and every couple of floors we would get out and look around.  The place had fantastic views of downtown and the walls of each room were almost entirely wall to wall and floor to ceiling windows.

I believe that most of those dorm bldgs that were built in this fashion could have this said of them.  This would be some of the 'dorm life' that accompanies this kind of living.

true all dorm life is often nutty like that. but i never heard of one being condemed. esp so relatively new. i don't think it was just the students being hard on it, there were some kind of major problems with the tower too. maybe my friend knows more i'll ask him...or maybe one of you guys know more about why they tore it down?

Sander had many problems from the begining with the fire alarms going off and it taking so long for everyone to evacuate.  The two stair towers were both located in the center of the building, and their were not enough elevators.  That plus the windswept plaza at the bottom made it difficult to open the doors.  I had a studio class on the first floor of the building in the 80's.  The upper floors had been abandonned a few years, and we figured out you could call the elevator if you stuck a piece of metal in the socket where the call button once was.  We enjoyed some beautiful sunsets from the top floor.  It was clearly the highest view in the city.
