June 16, 200619 yr I hope everyone has seen Glen Shwartz at Hooples. He's an amazing guitarist and INSANE! so its a really good show- especially with the amazing skyline views from the west bank of the flats. He won't last much longer, so you better be sure to see him soon. In fact, I'm going to see him play tonight. schwarz can wait. you really need to check out robert lockwood, jr before god forbid he passes: While in Cleveland, Robert and the Band will play EVERY Wednesday at FATFISH BLUE at their new location at the corners of Prospect and Ontario. from his website, check out his hilarious schedule this month --- thats quite a comedown at the end of the month! still, he's great. i used to see him at his old regular gig at brothers quite often. http://www.robertlockwood.com/ June 3, 2006 Saturday) Regatta Bar One Bennett St. HArvard Square Cambridge, MA June 7, 2006 (Wednesday) BB King Club 243 West 42 Street New York, NY Time: 8:00 PM June 10, 2006 (Saturday) Chicago Blues Festival Chicago, IL Front Porch 12:00 to 1:00 PM Juke Joint Stage 2:30 to 3:00 PM June 23, 2006 (Friday) Mikes Big Barn Elyria, OH even more pressing, if you like jazz see cleveland jazz legend little jimmy scott immediately. he's like 90 something years old! i saw him at jazz at lincoln center a couple years ago. awesome! http://www.artistsonly.com/scothm.htm
June 16, 200619 yr We had a thread (or maybe just 5 posts somewhere) about Jimmy Scott. Though I don't think Jimmy's the same age as Robert Lockwood (Robert Jr is 91), more like 85 or so.
June 16, 200619 yr --the late, great Randy Rhoads Yeah, he played a big hand in elevating metal to a higher level of sophistication, he's one of the guys responsible for introducing playing in exotic modes. As a result you had thousands of guys across the country in the 80's practicing those obscure scales endlessly, even now you pick up a guitar magazine and the writers try to intimidate you with their talk of modes. And who are these writers anyway? You don't need to know that crap. Tony Iomi doesn't know that crap and he out-rocks Randy. But walk into a music store and it's like when somebody's trying out a guitar they feel like they've got to run through some obscure scales just let the sales guys know they're serious. --Dimebag Darrell--made two notes into one of the heaviest riffs ever on "Walk" Yeah. There's a bartender I know who used to put that one sometimes when the place got crowded and just crank it. Then he'd go back to ZZ Top. You can't play more than 1 or 2 metal songs without risking running off the whole place. --Dave Mustaine is highly underrated, and perhaps one of the best rhythm players ever Yeah, they were a way better band than Metallica. In metal there are dumb bands and smart bands. Biohazard, Crowbar, and Metallica were dumb guys playing dumb music. Metallica somehow managed to write about 10 pretty good songs though. I don't know how it happened because none of them are very smart and none of them are very good players. Dave Mustaine was way smarter and better player than any of them and with a better band. He took on way more serious subject matter instead of spooks and hobgoblins. There is that contrast in metal again between bands singing about imaginary stuff and guys singing about real stuff. White Zombie and to some extent Maiden was about imaginary stuff, Marilyn Manson was about real stuff. Ozzy does both. I really think Ozzy is a hugely underrated songwriter and lyricist. Almost every Black Sabbath song was pretty damn good and almost every Ozzy song was pretty good with the exception of his last album from 2001 which stunk. He needs to quit playing with Zack Wylde, his playing is ridiculous. He has put pinch harmonics in nearly every bar of every riff he's played for the past 15 years. Zack needs to listen to Neil Young and other players who can play one-note solos.
June 16, 200619 yr DAVID...Hooples is just a crappy little cheap neighborhood bar, but it is a fun place. Schwartz plays only on Thursday nights. I agree with mrnyc, Lockwood Jr is well worth seeing as well...a blues legend....but hey...why not see both!!?!?! As far as Hooples, there is no door guy to check ID's, so you can just walk right in. Here is a link for you http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/restaurants/2173+hoopples+riverbed+cafe.html
June 16, 200619 yr I may be there too....wearing a "Mexico" shirt...you would be the first UrbanOhion'an I might meet..say hello if you see me! I was there actually, but check your message until after I went. I was there with a girlfriend of mine. We are both fairly young; just 21 years old, and we were sitting on a couple stools next to the ledge along the windows on the right side of the bar. We were drinking Miller High Life in bottles. Maybe you saw us. What is Hopples? Where is it and can you get in if you're 19 or is it 21+? I wouldn't mind taking a road trip to Cleveland for some good live music Hooples is a very blue collar no frills bar, but the skyline views and especially the music draw people from considerable distances. The Shwartz Brothers play every Thursday night, and supposedly "for free". Here is the link to the place: http://www.hoopples.com/ There is no cover or bouncer at the door, BUT the bartenders may in fact immediately ask for ID when you walk in if you are younger looking. If you are under, they force you to leave. When I was under I tried to convince them to let me stay with a number of excuses/reasons, and they didn't accept them. Now I'm 21, but on Thursdays when the Shwartz brothers play, this has happened to me and my friends everytime. If you are older looking and kind of sneak in by yourself without the bartenders seeing and just grab a seat a table, you can probably get away with it. Here is some info on the Schwartz Brothers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Schwartz Another great venue for live blues music in Cleveland is the Parkview Nite Club!!! The same owner that owns Hooples owns this place to. It is where I stole my avatar from. Wednesday nights they have a great jam session. No cover, and you can definately go under. This is a great off-the-beaten path "Cleveland" place in my opinion. Interesting crowd, vintage bar/decor from the 1940s, and vintage Cleveland memorabilia on the walls. This place is in a very obscure location, but people come from all different places in the area. The food there is surprisingly good. Even the presentation of the food is pretty classy, considering the very casual atmosphere. Their link is here: http://www.parkviewniteclub.com/ Is anyone reading this thread interested in meeting at Hooples next Thursday? I'm not sure if I have any plans, but if I don't I'll probably be there.
June 16, 200619 yr schwarz can wait. you really need to check out robert lockwood, jr before god forbid he passes: Well I will definately check him out Fat Fish sometime, but I kind of find it hard to believe. BTW, I've been to Mike's Barn in Elyria before. That's where I first heard Schwartz. That is such a cool place. Listening to great local bands in an old barn, and BYOB! Maybe I'll go on the 23rd.
June 16, 200618 yr Thanks for one upping me Vulpster!!! I thought I was cool by adding the link for david...but then your post crushed mine!
