I would guess the constant construction all around it probably didn’t help either. I was just reading that Kaufman already found a restaurant that's completely new to ohio, so should be interesting to find out what it is.

My guess is they were always operating from a little behind and never caught up. With all the new apartments opening there, I think the new restaurants will get it a little easier than Taft’s had it.

That's a shame, it looked like a really cool place with great drinks and menu. I don't know how much they got the word out, since every time I would come to Columbus it would never cross my mind as a place to check out, despite hitting up Franklinton on multiple occasions. Maybe a more established name could take on that location. It would pair very well with CBC's Beer Hall in the Trolley Barn at the East Market on the other side of town.

I think it's problem is there isn't enough foot traffic to casually stroll in and if you're heading that way for a destination, you're going to Land Grant.

Walnut St. Sweeney and Blake Compton, owner of Compton Construction, are working to transform the street of small homes into a quirky commercial corridor. There are eight houses slated for renovation in total: 494, 500, 510, 514, 530, 532, 536 and 544 W. Walnut St. Sweeney's Walnut Street Tavern will be the first of several new businesses on the block, and there are plans for the other houses to become a music hall, restaurant and other small retail shops. One of the homes also would have an artist in residency space. There's potential for some of the homes or backyards to be connected." https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/08/08/walnut-street-update.html Had a chance to check out Sweeney's on Walnut today. They have a cool little area in the back too

December 23, 2024Dec 23 The developer used to work for Marker, which has the site just down the road. Great guy. Very confident they'll move forward as well, as he definitely would know the area and feasibility of a project there.

I don't necessarily see it being approved, though. The Franklinton Commission is more open to taller, denser development than most neighborhoods, but I can easily see this being a bridge too far for even them. 11 stories was already arguably pushing it. I'd love for it to happen and to be a true catalyst for this part of Franklinton, though. When I always talk about maximizing potential of sites, this is what I am talking about, but even I'm pleasantly surprised. That doesn't happen that much. Is it possible he's proposing this so that when he gets the opposing feedback, he can go back to the height he actually wanted in the first place and claim compromise? I think that's also a good strategy. Better to cut it in half at 20 than at 11. Saw this pop up today, I’m surprised he is still trying.

We have far too much surface lots. It's incredibly cost-prohibitive, foreign to most consumers (I sure wouldn't trust it with my car after never seeing one in my life), and foolish. Remember y'all, this is the same guy that harasses random people on the street for 30 seconds of fame and has pictures floating around of him and a pumpkin doing very... obscene... things. He's a complete waste of administrative time, per the commission. Oh, and he also told the PRESIDENT of Elford Construction that he knows what he's doing (Rob), because "I'm a licensed general contractor."
December 29, 2024Dec 29 Whenever anyone mentions stacked parking I think of the old Tower Parking on Wall St. just north of LeVeque. Judging by the cars this looks like early to mid 1960's, but I don't remember it. To 4 story stacked garage is tiny compared to this.

Lol imagine that in Franklinton without any screening - its a foolish idea.
December 29, 2024Dec 29 They spent all that money on the thing only to see tons of buildings razed near it almost right away and the lots turned into surface parking.

January 6Jan 6 Hopefully they don’t redevelop this in the future and just continue to keep it as is. I honestly wouldn’t mind if the city bought this and operated it and gave cheaper rent for some of the spaces. Idea Foundry and Gravity Experience Park purchased by Columbus nonprofit The Columbus Next Generation Corp. has purchased the Idea Foundry and Gravity Experience Park in Franklinton. Boyce Safford, executive director of Columbus NextGen, said the nonprofit was asked by the city's development department to acquire the building and park. The Idea Foundry will continue to operate as is, Safford said. There are no plans at this time to sell the properties to a third-party owner, he said. Safford said Columbus NextGen is the entity that originally acquired the 65,000-square-foot former shoe factory that the Idea Foundry is in and helped the Franklinton Development Association with getting the Idea Foundry into the building years ago.

January 8Jan 8 Idea Foundry, Gravity Experience Park Properties Change Hands The Idea Foundry and the Gravity Experience Park next door both changed hands at the end of 2024. Both properties were purchased by Columbus Next Generation Corporation from Kaufman, the firm behind the multi-phase Gravity development. The Idea Foundry, a maker space and coworking facility that has operated out of the former warehouse building at 421 W. State St. since 2014, will remain open and operating as before, as will the half-acre lot next door. The outdoor area, which offers ice bumper cars and other activities, is operated by Land Grant. Boyce Safford, Executive Director of Columbus NextGen, said that the City of Columbus requested that the organization step in and buy the building “to maintain the property as is.” More below: https://columbusunderground.com/idea-foundry-gravity-experience-park-properties-change-hands-bw1/ "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

By what happened with CH, he screwed up somewhere and needed a bail-out. Something went terribly wrong where they had to bring in a competing entity to essentially man the book or construction and tell the investors, your money's safe again. At least that's the way it looks to me...

February 5Feb 5 This part of the article I really liked and I hope they have this same focus for the commercial spaces on the ground floor. “We’re going to be going after businesses of all sizes, not just larger tenants looking to take up an entire floor,” said Fortin. “We want startups who might only be looking for 1500 square feet. Columbus growing like crazy and we want to cater to up-and-coming businesses who want customized spaces.” Gravity Office Building Sells to New Owners, Rebrands
