I think when renderings first came out for the Gravity 2.0 site, it showed that as a restaurant. But who knows if that's still the plan or not?

Hopefully it won't become Arena District Phase 3 😑 That’s what really struck me too. Like, I knew they owned a good chunk of land, but that graphic really puts it into perspective. It’s about time NRI decides to 💩 or get off the toilet 🧐. Leaving all those buildings to deteriorate is holding that stretch of Franklinton back. I’ve said it before, but I really hope Kaufman is able to buy at least a chunk of that land for future phases of Gravity. Also notable from the article, it’s mentioned that R&R 2.0 is slated to start construction next year. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything on that one.

November 3, 20222 yr I like these plans. I’ll be glad to finally see inside the engine house. Columbus Historical Society hopes to start local heritage center in Franklinton with Engine House No. 6, Harrison House and other lot “The Columbus Historical Society bought Engine House No. 6 at 540 West Broad St. for about $700,000 last November. The organization is gearing up to start the renovation of the outside and the first floor of the fire house, which will cost about $800,000. The first floor of the fire house will become a community meeting space and exhibit spaces. Mike Frush, president of the board of trustees of the Columbus Historical Society, said one of the exhibit spaces would be dedicated to transportation history in Columbus, complete with a 1920 Allen Motor car made in Columbus, a 1915 Model T likely assembled in Columbus and an 1800s Columbus Buggy Co. buggy. This renovation will start soon, Frush said, and is expected to take about a year. A $1.5 million second phase of renovations would help turn the second floor of the engine house into a research library housing the Columbus Historical Society's current archives, artifacts related to Abraham Lincoln and his ties to Columbus and an art collection. The Lincoln artifacts include 1,200 books and nearly 2,000 letters. Frush said the historical society also hopes to purchase the land in between the Harrison House and engine house at 550 W. Broad St. to create a history park. There is currently a non-historical building on the lot that Frush said the historical society would tear down if they buy the property.“ https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2022/11/03/columbus-historical-society.html

This isn’t a redevelopment I was expecting to see. I wonder if the Glass Axis will be relocating, or staying on the ground floor? Looks like ~63 units including the townhomes. I’m not a fan of the parking in the back either, but it still seems to be a pretty good reduction overall in surface lot parking. Town St. – the current home of Glass Axis – is scheduled to be heard by the East Franklinton Review Board this afternoon. The proposal, from Marker Development, calls for preserving a portion of the existing one-story, brick building and incorporating it into a new, five-story, mixed-use development. The proposed building would hold between 60 and 70 apartments on its upper four floors, above first floor retail/amenity space and parking. More parking would be provided behind the building, in a surface lot accessed from Chapel Street. Initial plans and renderings submitted to the city also show three townhomes on Chapel Street. The new buildings are shown without architectural detail – the proposal is scheduled to be reviewed conceptually, meaning that the applicant will need to return to the board with a more detailed design before a final vote of approval.” More: https://columbusunderground.com/five-story-development-proposed-for-glass-axis-site-in-franklinton-bw1/

December 11, 20222 yr While it might not be as “sexy” as some of the other development going on in Franklinton, I think the new mental health and addiction crisis center will still play an important role in serving the community. While it’s been planned for the past several years, it sounds like the new facility will break ground soon on a currently vacant lot in South Franklinton. From the Dispatch editorial board: 'Warm, welcoming' $59 million crisis center will be game changer for Columbus “If all goes as planned, ground will be broken next month on a game-changing, patient-focused facility designed for those in the midst of mental health and substance emergencies. Columbus City Council on Monday will be asked to rezone land for the $59 million Franklin County Mental Health and Addiction Crisis Center on Harmon Avenue spearheaded by Franklin County, Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County and the Central Ohio Hospital Council. The round-the-clock, home-like center which will be operated by RI International, a company that provides mental health and substance abuse services around the nation including the new Crisis Now Receiving Center in Montgomery County. Set to open in 2025, the center will have outdoor spaces for staff and patients and serve anyone 18 or older regardless of immigration status, insurance or residency.“ https://www.dispatch.com/story/opinion/editorials/2022/12/11/what-is-the-franklin-county-mental-health-and-addiction-crisis-center/69706846007/
December 20, 20222 yr I saw this site a week or two ago, and it was fenced off, but no movement. Hopefully we’ll see both it and the Continental Centre get started in 2023. Two Columbus Projects Awarded Historic Tax Credits “Two local developments were awarded Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits today. One of them – a proposal to renovate the former Continental Centre at 150 E. Gay St. – actually received credits last summer. The developers of the project reapplied for credits this round in order to take advantage of changes to the program resulting from Senate Bill 225, which was signed by Governor DeWine in June and went into effect in September. Toledo-based Welltower and the Bernstein Companies (based in Washington DC) bought the Continental Centre in early 2021. The building was constructed in 1972 to hold the headquarters of Ohio Bell Southwestern. Plans for the conversion, which were approved by the Downtown Commission in March, call for 336 apartments, first floor retail, and a rooftop pool. The other Columbus project to receive historic preservation tax credits this round is a plan to renovate the former Starling Middle School in Franklinton. The historic building, constructed in 1908, served as the original West High School and was listed on Columbus Landmarks’ Most Endangered list in 2021.“ https://columbusunderground.com/two-columbus-projects-awarded-historic-tax-credits-bw1/

December 21, 20222 yr Second phase of Gravity development prepares to open, sound baths and all ‘"We’ve been very pleased with how it’s come along," said Frank Sasso, president of Kaufman Development, which created the Gravity brand. "We will start delivering our first units in the first quarter. Throughout the spring and early summer, we will have artists painting murals all over the project, with some really exciting announcements including international artists and sculptors adding place-making and activation to the site." Gravity's second phase includes four buildings, all wrapping up: - A 12-story residential tower on West Broad Street, with 17,000-square-feet of ground-floor restaurant space. The building includes 256 studio and one- and two-bedroom apartments, along with several amenities such as a rooftop deck. The building is expected to open in late spring. No restaurant tenant has been identified yet. - A 175,000-square-foot, five-story office building, at Broad and McDowell streets. OhioHealth will soon start to build out half of the first floor with an urgent and primary care unit. Tenants have not been identified for the rest of the building, though some of the space will be used for Gravity programs such as meditation and sound baths, Sasso said. - An 890-space parking garage on McDowell Street. The garage, expected to open in early 2023, will serve Gravity as well as the surrounding neighborhood. - A five-story residential building on McDowell and West State streets. In addition to 56 studio and one-bedroom apartments, the building will feature 36 shared-living apartments, each with four or five bedrooms around common living rooms and kitchens, similar to student apartments. The building will also feature several common spaces, including art studios, meditation rooms and a demonstration kitchen. The shared-living residential building is expected to open in the first three months of 2023, welcoming the first tenants to Gravity's second phase. Sasso said the rest of Gravity will gradually open throughout 2023 and be fully open by late fall. Sasso said Kaufman Development also expects to soon announce plans for the Idea Foundry, the business incubator at West State and Lucas streets, across from the Gravity development, that the company bought in March for $5 million. "Our plan is to tie everything in with the Idea Foundry, to make a cohesive neighborhood experience," Sasso said.” https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2022/12/21/gravity-bringing-more-homes-offices-restaurants-to-franklinton/69738807007/
