Nearly another year before the chilled water plant is completed? Really?

I was surprised to see that too.  Your photo from May and this photo from June at http://www.columbusunderground.com/construction-roundup-june-part-2 seem to indicate a mostly complete exterior.  Maybe the inside equipment or hookups with the neighboring buildings is the reason?

OSU held their official grand opening for the renovated Sullivant Hall yesterday.  The neo-classic building at 15th & High is now home to OSU’s Department of Dance, Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy, the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design, the Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise, and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library Museum.

OSU is considering some significant changes to its campus bus and shuttle system.  If approved by the OSU Board of Trustees in November, it would mean the following changes in and around the main campus.  Information from http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/09/14/ohio-state-plan-uses-shuttles-to-curbtraffic.html:

  • Parking for Medical Campus workers would relocate to the West Campus.  In 2016, a relocation of Cannon Drive would remove 2,100 parking spaces that medical workers currently use.

  • Cars would be barred through the central campus during the day on 17th, 18th and 19th Avenues between College Road and Neil Avenue.

  • Neil Avenue between Woodruff and 19th avenues would be opened to bus shuttles.  Currently this area is a pedestrian walkway.

  • 17th Avenue would be extended west, running just south of Ohio Stadium to Cannon Drive, so buses could pick up students in the two dorm towers near the Olentangy River.

  • A bus transit center would be created at RPAC - the campus recreation center just southeast of Ohio Stadium.

  • On-campus and off-campus bus and shuttle routes would be changed as per the below map.

More equipment and hookups to the North Dorms project are the reason the East Chilled Water Plant is listed as not being complete until next year.  From http://thelantern.com/2014/09/2-construction-projects-at-risk-of-going-over-budget-more-work-approved/:

"The East Regional Chilled Water Plant is budgeted to cost $66.8 million.  The goal of the project is to provide chilled water to Academic Core North buildings and it’s set to be completed in two phases.  The first phase was completed ahead of time in July, Administration and Planning spokeswoman Alison Hinkle said.  Phase two is set to involve installing three additional chillers, which will provide chilled water to the North Residential District following completion."

Norwich Flats opened up last month one block north of Lane Avenue.  The apartment building has 56 units with 156 beds and includes an internal garage with parking for 140 cars.

More about it at http://www.livenorwichflats.com.  Some photos from the Norwich Flats facebook page. (The first image is a rendering, but it gives the best overview of the entire project and accurately depicts the final product.) ^ That looks like a better version of the 40-unit (150 W Lane Ave) proposal from Edwards in 2012.  More of the building built to the street edge and no surface parking lot behind the building in this version.

(Previous proposal posted HERE and HERE in this thread.)

More from Business First about two buildings on the OSU campus at Neil & W. 12th Avenues to be renovated as part of the Big Data initiative in Columbus.  Pomerene Hall at the northeast corner and Oxley Hall at the southeast corner will serve as the University's Big Data headquarters and house a new interdiscplinary major in data analytics.

-- OSU to begin work on $59M renovation of Pomerene, Oxley halls for Big Data initiative: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2015/01/26/osu-to-begin-work-on-59m-renovation-of-pomerene.html

POMERENE HALL:  Opened 1922.  Designed by architecture professor Howard Dwight Smith (who also designed Ohio Stadium).  Pomerene was built in two phases.  The 1922 section contained a gymnasium, where women's phys-ed classes were held, and social rooms.  A second phase in 1927 added a natatorium, lounges, a kitchen and refectory.  Pomerene Hall lost most of its original functions after the construction of the Ohio Union in 1951.  Although many of the women's phys-ed classes were held there until the late 1970's.  (more info at http://library.osu.edu/buckeye-stroll/locations/pomerene-hall)

OXLEY HALL:  Opened 1908 as a women's dorm, named for University President William Oxley Thompson’s mother (her maiden name, which is where he got his middle name) and designed by a female architect (a rarity over 100 years ago).  The building served as a dormitory until 1967.  It was remodeled in 1989 and became the Department of International Affairs in 1991, until its current renovation starts.  (more info at http://library.osu.edu/blogs/archives/2012/02/02/osus-first-womens-dorm-oxley-hall/)

Too good not to share; hopefully it will go up quicker than The View. More than likely we'll see the building/awnings come down then the tanks and dirt will be moving out to make way for the foundation.

Ohio State to build 4,000-seat ‘Covelli Arena’ thanks to $10M gift

Has anyone heard anything more about this? The announcement was a long time ago and then nothing more was ever written about it from what I could find. I mostly ask because for the better part of a year it seems they have been doing utility work (I think that's what it is) around the area the arena was planned for. I don't know if it is related or not.

I just drove past and they are actively working today. It looks like the are probably digging up the tanks.

About a year after the arena news, OSU announced a sports medicine center for the same site. I'm not sure what the status of either project is today, or which one will be ending up exactly where though...

Thanks, I came across that discussion when I was looking for info. It sounds like they are both intended for that same area, not necessarily the exact same site. Either way the article about the Sports Medicine Center says they hoped to open in 2015 so even that is not going as quickly as hoped. It will be interesting to see if there is news about either of these in the spring.

If I'm not mistaken I believe there is basic ground work going on in that area.  To be fair I haven't really seen the area during the day in about a month but I'll try and go check it out this week.

Ohio State planning overhaul along High Street for ‘cultural gateway’

Ohio State University is seeking architects to begin the design process for a $200 million overhaul of the school's arts district that re-imagines a key part of High Street and leaves the future of the Mershon Auditorium cloudy.

The school hinted at the changes in its 2010 long-term vision when it called the arts district around the Wexner Center for the Arts a "vital pulse" for the university. But specifics are more detailed in a new request for qualifications. The university foresees a "cultural gateway and corridor" that attracts students, Columbus-area residents and international visitors.

Like I said they have been doing some kind of utility work around there for a while, and I didn't see any project signs saying what exactly was going on, but yes there is even more activity there now. I got a few photos but there isn't much to be seen.

High Street is gaining more than enough density to support a streetcar or light rail corridor.

Ohio State planning mixed-use 15th and High District as new campus gateway

osu-15th-high-buildings*600.jpg

Ohio State University's plans for an arts district on campus may get a mixed-use companion across High Street at 15th Avenue.

The university's Campus Partners for Community Urban Redevelopment affiliate has filed rezoning plans with the city to allow it and private-sector partners to develop a mixed-use project anchored by a public square, hotel, student housing, office and retail shops on nearly 9 acres.

Wow. Certainly some big news. It will be interesting to watch how this project starts to come together over the next couple years.

When I first saw the Dispatch article about this I was worried they were basically going to bulldoze the whole business district and replace it with a monolithic development like the South Campus Gateway. I was relieved though that it is really just a framework to guide redevelopment. I do think the hotel and public parking structure would be a good addition to the area.

Interesting thread on reddit - Columbus about this today:

Note - there's some swear words.

Personally, I feel that redevelopment efforts should be focused on areas that are struggling as opposed to ones that are doing great.

One guy halfway down says that a big reason for this has to do with appeasing international students because they have so much $$.

I agree with most of this. Corporate sameness is lousy. Renovation doesn't need to be detonation. And while not on the scale of OSU, The Univ. of Akron has gone through such a sanitation is really feels like the mom and pop soul of the place has been ripped away.

I hope Edwards is able to save the pair of mid-century sculptural reliefs on the buildings which will be demolished. They committed to the UAC that they would at least try to, so I guess we'll see if they can get them off undamaged.

Meh.

These types of developments are at nearly every major college.  It's about time OSU get's with the times as far as our dorms and off campus offerings.  Though I love that Ohio State is unique in and of itself I am much more impressed by places like Madison, Bloomington, Austin and Morgantown in their off-campus offerings.  Ohio State is outdated compared to a lot of other university communities.  The north campus area needs an overhaul and shot in the arm.  I am very unimpressed with what Buckeye Real Estate did on Neil & Thompkins, but love the Norwich Flats development.

I think this new building will end up looking pretty outdated itself in a couple of decades. I believe the original proposal was for a more interesting 5-story building.

I don't think this 4-story proposal is bad, but it's not very exciting.

I wish they weren't tearing down St. John's Arena, so I'm glad - looks like that building can live a little longer, maybe long enough for someone to see the value in a cool old building.
