15th and High redevelopment: Ohio State officials want area to be more adult

The Ohio State University campus that freshmen step onto when classes start this week will look almost unimaginably different when they graduate.

Ongoing demolition on North High Street begins what will be drastic makeover of the core campus area, with standbys like Bernie’s Bagels & Deli and Long’s Bookstore falling to make way for new apartments, retail and lodging options.

LOL Campus Partners.  "More adult...like Ann Arbor."  First off, you're in Columbus so throwing out U of M as your model location will not win you over with anyone here.

Secondly, what "adults" are going to want to pay for parking in an area surrounded by young, drunk college students? They can get their "adult" experience anywhere else in town.  It seems like it would do well for 7-8 Saturdays a year and struggle the for the other 357 days.

I realize you can't keep High Street the same forever, but trying to cater to people who don't live immediately in your vicinity? Seems like a tough sell.

Yea, it's worked out at Gateway for them well.  They had vacancies on High Street until very recently and strong armed several bars out of the development including Eddie George's.

Aside for the rivalry, Ann Arbor is a bad comparison because it is a small town. The business district adjacent to the university is the city's downtown and there are office, civic, and retail/restaurant uses consistent with a downtown.

It seems fairly common that business districts directly adjacent to universities in larger cities are mostly dominated by college related uses--bookstores, bars, clubs, fast-casual dining, etc. I'm sure there are examples that I cannot come up with off the top of my head of more comprehensive neighborhood business districts adjacent to universities, but they probably are located in neighborhoods that are less dominated by students.

Morgantown, Athens, Oxford, Bowling Green, Kent, Bloomington are all pretty good examples in addition to Ann Arbor.  I don't really get the appeal of wanting adults on campus but I do remember seeing a couple of what I guess were "black tie affairs" at the Wex when I was in school.  A couple of times in particular with a few Rolls and Bentley's being valeted into the lot off of High.  I agree with a previous poster though that a few times a year should not dictate to fabric of an entire district or neighborhood.  If they start attracting high dollar and world renowned artists/exhibits or even plays, ok.  I do like the idea of another more centralized higher end hotel in the campus area as this is something that I do think we're missing and would be attractive to visitors.

The final four new dorms at the North Campus Residential District opened over the weekend for the Fall Semester:

-- Blackburn House - 8-story, 532 beds

-- Busch House - 7-story, 474 beds

-- Houston House - 8-story, 560 beds

-- Nosker House - 6-story, 480 beds

Bathroom sinks are open to the dorm hallway to allow students to chat while shaving or brushing their teeth.

While the development approval process first began back in January for the redevelopment of the High Street block between 16th and 17th Avenues, representatives from the Edwards Communities made it official today with the unveiling of “The Wellington”. Ohio State may save St. John Arena from demolition

St. John Arena, the aged but beloved venue on the Ohio State University campus, may get a respite from the wrecking ball.

University planning officials on Thursday presented Ohio State trustees with three options for the site of the arena, which the school previously recommended be demolished.

So will Lennox's stay open or close?

So will Lennox's stay open or close?

At approximately 28,000 square feet, the new store will be much smaller than the average Target stores, which range from 135,000 square feet to 175,000 square feet for Super Target locations.

Well, it seems like this location will be a tiny version so it's likely Lennox would stay open.

Very Stable Genius

Great News. I am sure it will do well there. And this means that two thirds of the retail space in the building will be taken  by this Urban Target and the rest will quickly be taken up by restaurants, etc. so it will not be vacant*cough South Campus Gatewaycough*. Plus if this is a success than maybe there will be a time for another one south of there(downtown?)

I would think the Lennox stays put. That location serves UA and Grandview.

I'll bet the High St. location will get a lot of foot traffic during the school year.

This is great news. Glad we are finally seeing one of the smaller, urban format Targets open in Columbus. I'm sure Lennox will stay as-is, and if anything this will probably improve the shopping experience there for us non-students.

Plus if this is a success than maybe there will be a time for another one south of there(downtown?)

Already in the works, I don't know the exact location yet because Target doesn't.  However a friend in the business told me this was coming to campus it was just a matter of where and when.  The "downtown" location is being scouted as we speak.

Target must want an iron fist over center-city Columbus.

I understand why Target would pursue an Ohio State location, but Downtown Columbus doesn't seem to have the population or housing density to support one at this time. But I would not object.

Another article on it:

Target store coming next to the Ohio State campus

Target is coming to a busy intersection by the Ohio State University campus.

The discount retailer is planning to open a smaller-than-usual store at the corner of 16th Avenue and High Street, across from the Wexner Center for the Arts and in the heart of the corridor being redeveloped by Ohio State and private developers.

Maybe the Edwards' project at Gay and High? Similar footprint and the developer group has a relationship with Target?

In fact, I can't remember what the name was....too many pitchers of cheap beer haha!

Ohio State makes play for sports medicine preeminence with $45M Crane Institute

By Carrie Ghose, Staff Reporter - Columbus Business First

Updated: September 27, 2016, 9:20am EDT

Dr. Christopher Kaeding for the past decade has urged Ohio State University to take advantage of a growing academic medical center and dominant athletic programs to become a national leader in sports medicine research and treatment.

That ambition now has a home with the opening of the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute, a $45 million, 110,000-square-foot outpatient facility of Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.  Opening in stages through November, it unites surgery, a clinic, physical therapy and research for 15 collaborating academic disciplines.  Some 200 employees will move to the building from scattered sites, and the center just off the Ackerman Road exit of Route 315 is expected to create another 50 jobs.

Ohio State renovating Mirror Lake to make it cleaner and safer (no more Michigan jump)

One of the most prominent landmarks on Ohio State University's campus – and the scene of one of its more enduring traditions – is set for a major renovation.

Ohio State said Tuesday it has spent nearly three years figuring out how to clean the polluted lake and prevent leaking, with a redevelopment plan to focus on "safety and sustainability."

First Look: OSU’s New North Residential District

Students moved into the first new buildings in OSU’s North Residential District in the fall of 2015. Construction of the remaining buildings – all located west of High Street, between Lane and Woodruff avenues – continued until right before move-in this past August. This semester, the first in which sophomores are required to live on campus, marks the first time that the new district is being used to its full capacity.

Ohio State plans to knock down the 'whispering wall' by the Wexner Center for the Arts

The heart of Ohio State University and its fronting North High Street is in a period of dramatic change– and a well-known landmark on campus may soon be gone, too.

The "whispering wall," a curved slab of concrete stairs abutting the Wexner Center for the Arts facing College Road, is set to come down when the university begins redeveloping the western side of High Street along 15th Avenue.

Here's an update on the 7-story Lane Ave and Tuttle Park Pl project from The Lantern, along with a much worse rendering than the original...

They're planning for residents to move in beginning Jan 2018.

Thanks for the update.  Good news about the project moving ahead - but yikes on that new rendering!  Hopefully its just a bad new rendering and not a bad new design.  It'd a shame since the original design/rendering was really good.
