$5M gift to WOSU will help move station to 15th & High District

Like other members, Sandy and Andy Ross have contributed over the years to WOSU Public Media.

But nothing compares to the couple's last donation.

The Rosses, 30-year members, recently gave a $5 million gift – the largest in WOSU's history.

"We can’t imagine our lives without WOSU, and want to inspire others to have it in their lives," Mr. Ross said in a news release.

Ohio State University starts new school year with record enrollment

Ohio State University says it has set a new enrollment record with 68,100 students. That's 1,656 more students than the school enrolled on all campuses in 2017.

"The Columbus campus has changed dramatically," Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce McPheron told me. "As our demographics change, more experienced students apply from all corners of the state and nation."

The reason for the increase, he said, is two-fold: Ohio State is admitting and retaining more students year over year.

Ohio State taking on $29M renovation of busy laboratory building

ohio-state-oval*750xx4000-2260-0-672.jpg

The Celeste Lab is one of the busiest facilities on the Ohio State University campus, and officials have concluded that years of wear and tear warrant an upgrade.

"Celeste Lab accommodates approximately 75,000 credit hours per year and delivers laboratory instruction to approximately 10 percent of the student population," OSU spokesman Dan Hedman told me. "These renovations are important to support one of our most-used facilities."

Renovation for the lab, built in 1986, was approved for $3.9 million in professional services, including design, during the August board of trustees meetings and is included in the school's fiscal year 2019 Capital Investment Plan.

WOSU already halfway to $12M goal for new 15th and High headquarters

WOSU Public Media is undertaking a $12 million capital campaign to build its new headquarters at East 14th Avenue and Pearl Alley, part of the emerging 15th and High area adjacent to the Ohio State University campus.

So far, individual and corporate gifts have contributed more than $9 million to the effort, including the $5 million gift from Sandy and Andy Ross, $2 million from the L Brands Foundation and $1 million from the AEP Foundation.

The five-story, 53,000-square-foot facility will take WOSU out of the basement of the Fawcett Center north of campus and move it into the center of action, Keith Myers, vice president of planning and real estate at Ohio State University, told me.

After seven months of construction, Ohio State's Oval ready to open

ohio-state-oval*1024xx4000-2260-0-672.jp

It's a few weeks later than originally anticipated, but Ohio State University's Oval will be (mostly) free of fencing and ready for students and faculty to pass through come Nov. 15.

The project also updated what those passers-by won't see – 3,000 feet of utility lines snaking through a brick-and-mortar tunnel system built in the early 1900s.

Work started in April and was expected to be finished at the end of October, but the complexity of the project pushed back the timeline a bit.

Ohio State update: New renderings show latest look of 15th & High project.

Quote

Campus Partners, the real estate arm of Ohio State University, on Thursday released new renderings for buildings planned along what will be known as University Square at 15th Avenue and High Street.

The new buildings will be located on the east side of High Street, between 14th and 16th avenues, and will include 50,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and about 250,000 square feet of office space on the upper four floors. The buildings will be crafted from brick, limestone and granite.

Check out the attached gallery to see the new renderings.

Construction is expected to begin in 2019.

New Renderings Released for 15th and High

New renderings released today by Campus Partners give the best idea yet of what Pearl Alley between 14th and 16th Avenues will look like after the multifaceted 15th and High project is complete.

The images show three five-story buildings, one overlooking University Square – the public plaza planned as the centerpiece of the development – and the other two extending south from 15th Avenue. Those buildings would sit on either side of a new, pedestrian-scaled street connecting North High Street and Pearl Alley.

Here are the construction projects Ohio State's trustees will consider

ohio-union-exterior*750xx1024-576-0-54.j

It's that time of year again: the week when Ohio State's Board of Trustees will meet.

Columbus Business First has complied this list of the big construction projects that will go before the board for various approvals.

Some projects already have been approved to start construction, but Ohio State still needs to hire the people who'll do the work. Other projects need approval to start construction, and some projects are seeking approval for both at once.

Ohio State's Arts District moving forward alongside 15th & High project

Curious about how much Ohio State's upcoming Arts District – designed to be the new High Street entrance to campus – is set to cost? Try more than the planned $150 million Millennial Tower, but less than the $240 million headquarters CoverMyMeds wants to build in Franklinton.

$160 million is how much the university says it will pay for the project on the west side of High Street. The work will ultimately renovate and expand the School of Music building and construct a new Department of Theatre building. The project will also extend Annie and John Glenn Avenue from College Road to High Street and make modifications to College Road and surrounding pedestrian spaces.

Ohio State releases new renderings of planned Arts District, 15th & High project

Ohio State University's planned Arts District is coming together.

The OSU Board of Trustees' Master Planning and Facilities committee met Thursday to see an update on the design work for the $160 million project, about a year after the full board approved the concept.

“This will serve as a new center in the core of campus,” said Keith Myers, the university's vice president of planning and real estate. “We don’t have a lot of spaces like this. It will be really dramatic when it’s complete.”

How can a so-called "arts district" look so utterly conformist and corporate?

Seems like any discussion from yesterday got wiped. Could have sworn I saw the article about the new parking garage and slight update on the new hospital tower was posted. And then someone asked about a possibility on the height of that tower.

Well, the new tower is to have 800 beds; more than twice the number of the 20 floor James that opened a few years ago. I'm not saying it will be twice as tall, but I wouldn't be surprised to see 25+ floors. The site (the current North and South Cannon garages) is a little larger than the James footprint, but if they continue the road between McCampbell Hall and the new garage they're building from King to 10th all the way to 12th, that will leave a similar footprint. They'd surely build a connection over that road to connect to the James. Anyway, it sounds like they'll have a design and go for funding approval a year from now. Will be interesting to see this going forward.

Also, in regards to the 15th+High project, the original RFP said a developer for the hotel would be selected by July of this year. Did they not receive any proposals they liked? There was no update of that portion in the new articles from this week.

Yes.  I posted a Business First article about the OSU trustees approving design work for a 1870-space parking garage at the medical campus in the OSU Medical Center thread.  In the article they said it was part of prep work for another hospital tower of over 800 beds.  And then someone else commented whether this new tower would be larger then the recently completed 20-story James Center.

Don't know what happened to those posts, but I reposted the Business First article over in OSU Medical Center thread at https://forum.urbanohio.com/index.php?/topic/9257-columbus-osu-medical-center-expansion/&page=3&tab=comments#comment-864243

Construction never stops on Ohio State University’s main campus. Here’s an update on some of the latest projects.

Construction of the Covelli Center began in July and is scheduled to be finished in May of 2019. Although the arena was originally planned for the corner of Fred Taylor Drive and Ackerman Road, its new location is just north of Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Also, the Schumaker Center from this photo is complete and looks quite nice. Sorry, no picture:

Funny, this maps shows a "future indoor track" and "future ice arena", but not the future Ty Tucker Tennis Center just east of the Covelli Center that received approval and will be built starting August 2019. The rich get richer when it comes to OSU athletics. They're going to have killer facilities in almost every sport. It's really looking good over there.

Ohio State adds to growing sports district with new student-athlete training complex

Ohio State University has completed the next step in its Athletics District, a high-profile part of the school's Framework 2.0 master plan.

The center is named in honor of the family of Shirley and Harold Schumaker, frequent donors to the university.

Without giving too much away and possibly shattering hopes, a source of mine that previously worked for the university last year mentioned that Ohio States next high-rises (yes, multiples according to the source) will be by the hospital.

Aren’t they going to build another hospital that’s roughly double the number of beds as the last high rise hospital they built?

The build-out of west campus will really put a strain on Lane Ave and it's intersections with Kenny and 315. Some sort of mass transit along the railroad parallel to 315 would certainly help.

From my understanding, yes. I didn't seen the proposals, but apparently it's massive. While OSU has made their intentions known, I remain skeptical of their ambitions until I see dirt being overturned.

https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2017/11/29/ohio-state-plans-new-hospital-tower-bigger-than.html

The plan in 2017 was for an 840 bed hospital.

https://trustees.osu.edu/sites/default/files/migrated/assets/files/meeting-materials/2-2018/WMCBoard.pdf

In January 2018, $70 million was allocated for preliminary design work, with the same plans. I think it will probably be late 2019 we see serious designs and the next phase starting.

They have also already allocated money for the construction of the first replacement parking structure (they are putting a new structure down so that they can demo the Canon North/South structures). That happened at the end of 2018 WMC trustee meeting. I hope when they introduce the design documents for the new tower they include a second new parking structure as well.

From a financial perspective, there is a lot of cash and debt interest is a small component of the health system budget. You can review the end of fiscal year financials in here: https://trustees.osu.edu/sites/default/files/documents/2018/12/wmcboard_11_14.pdf. Because bed occupancy is so high right now, they have a strong incentive to build the new tower as quickly as possible. Presumably, the demand is there to increase from 440 -> 840 beds.

In terms of size, the new tower will need to be at least twice as large as the new James. It has twice the number of beds, a new ED, new imaging and surgical facilities. On the other hand, they will save space by not needing a multi-story above-ground rad-onc department like the James now has. I don't think they will substantially cut the number of beds built, but they will probably leave several floors incomplete like they did with the James and build them out as they adjust to the increased capacity.

Ohio State trustees to vote on WOSU headquarters at 15th and High

The planned $29 million WOSU headquarters – one of the crucial parts of Ohio State University's 15+High project – is heading toward a final step this week.

OSU trustees will vote Friday on officially leasing the space to WOSU – the final step in ensuring that station's headquarters will be a part of the 15+HIgh district along High Street.

The four-story, 53,000-square-foot facility for WOSU would go up on 14th Avenue and Pearl Street and will take WOSU out of the basement of the Fawcett Center north of campus and move it closer to the center of campus.

OSU’s West Campus Plans Inspire New Look at Olentangy Corridor Ideas

The latest plans for a west campus “innovation district” have inspired planners at Ohio State University to take a new look at where recreation facilities are located and how they can better be aligned with the Olentangy River.

Now that much of Fred Beekman Park – the collection of recreation fields at the corner of Lane Avenue and Kenny Road – is on track to be replaced with several new research buildings, a reshuffling of amenities is necessary.

Some temporary fields will be built on the other side of Kenny Road (on a site once designated for housing), but other permanent recreation facilities are now planned closer to river.

First New Building, Larger Plan for OSU’s West Campus Unveiled

Interdisciplinary-Research-Facility-620x

Ohio State University took the first concrete steps this week toward the realization of its grand vision for a west campus “innovation district.”

Materials presented to the Board of Trustees Master Planning and Facilities Committee on Thursday show preliminary designs for two new buildings that would sit near the southwest corner of Lane Avenue and Kenny Road – one to hold an Energy Advancement and Innovation Center and the other an Interdisciplinary Research Facility.

The materials also show more details of the large mixed-use district that is planned for the surrounding land; an area bounded roughly by Lane Avenue, Kenny Road, Kinnear Road and North Star Road. That area could eventually be filled in with a new street grid, dozens of new mid-rise buildings, and apartments for as many as 4,000 residents.

I have a theory that this was originally supposed to be the anchor location for Apple had they chosen Ohio over Texas. I know JobsOhio never mentioned the location but with the relationship OSU and apple harness, I seems likely it would've been Columbus.  Just the way this all came about and the overall focus of the project very much seems like it is a development that was anchored around something like a tech campus. Unfortunate we will never know but i'm excited OSU is planning to move forward with such a plan.

They also had planned this for a portion of south campus behind the western portion of gateway all the way to Neil.  It was a rumor 3-4 years ago that was circulating, I think Google was the main focus at that time.

A new apartment building rising over Tuttle Park in the University District now officially has a name and an opening date. The Urban is a six-story building at 200 W. Norwich Ave. that will open before the start of fall semester, according to banners posted on construction fencing at the site.

The development, from Kansas-based Elsey Partners, first went before neighborhood groups in late 2016. A Council Variance for the project was approved in April of 2017, allowing a total of 274 bedrooms, with parking for 146 cars in an underground garage.

Ooohhhh very interesting. We were just talking aobu that 114 E. 5th Ave lot in the Italian Village thread. That spot has a ton of potential. I hope it's a good proposal.

Check out the the latest renderings of WOSU's future 15th and High HQ

Tom Rieland thinks it's about time his media company moves into a new home.

"This is an event that's been a century in the making," Rieland, general manager of WOSU Public Media, said at a Thursday morning groundbreaking ceremony for the outlet's new headquarters on Ohio State University's campus.

The new five-story, 52,000-square-foot facility will take WOSU out of the basement of the Fawcett Center north of campus and move it into the center of action at the emerging 15th and High redevelopment district of campus. It is expected to be completed in early 2021.

I suppose the most generous observations about The Urban on W. Norwich are that it increases density and that it's fairly well hidden from view.

It also has a fun soviet style to it.

The renderings weren't awful, hopefully it will brighten up a bit when they finish the exterior.

This School of Music building pictured here is apparently going to be 85 feet tall.

And this project will have a 150 foot tower crane ?
