October 1, 20195 yr Construction here is nice, but I miss the character of High Street when I was in school.
October 1, 20195 yr Additional tower crane going up next to the Medical Center for the new garage along Cannon Dr this morning. Ohio State may have some six cranes up at once here soon.
October 1, 20195 yr It seems we can always count on OSU for a handful of tower cranes each year. How tall will this one be? I don't recall seeing an application for it.

October 1, 20195 yr When I first opened this page up and saw the new picture, I thought maybe movement was happening on the new hospital tower, lol. I NEED IT. This is the area it's going to go, yes?

October 2, 20195 yr So it looks like this one will be about the same height as the first one, and the final one will be the taller of the three. I wonder how soon we will see crane number 3 going up.
October 3, 20195 yr Here's a good chunk of campus. In the distance you can see the mixed-use development at Olentangy River Rd and Ackerman starting to rise. You can also see the numerous ~7 story hotels that have been built along Olentangy River Rd and the new Ohio Health HQ.

It is cool driving down 670 or 71 and see both Downtown and the Univ Dist on either side of you and how they are growing.
October 3, 20195 yr 2nd Tower Crane Pictures You can see the base for the 3rd tower crane in between the two currently standing. I didn't see the mobile crane used to erect the tower cranes on site this afternoon (it was overnight for the 2nd crane). Edited October 3, 20195 yr by NorthShore647

Also, your crane sketch made me laugh ?

October 30, 20195 yr This news about the closing of the OSU-operated Buckeye Village apartments is not exactly a surprise. Its future status has been uncertain for the last few years. And with the expanding Athletics Campus located to the south, the writing has been on the wall for Buckeye Village. Still, it would be nice if Ohio State could provide some on-campus housing for students-with-families (many of which are international students). The article mentioned that in 2017, Ohio State invited developers to propose plans for a housing complex for up to 450 apartments on 10 acres at the northeast corner of Kenny Road and Woody Hayes Drive. But OSU stipulated that rents had to be 25% below nearby market rents and include heat, water, internet service and trash removal. None of the proposals met the required quality and affordability thresholds and Ohio State has not yet revisited that proposal: Ohio State announces plans to close Buckeye Village family housing, raising student concerns Following the end of the 2019-20 school year, Ohio State University will close its Buckeye Village apartments for graduate students and families. Officials told Buckeye Village residents about the closure Monday evening, putting an end to the complex, the future of which has been uncertain for several years. Strategic plans dating back to 2010 have called for the redevelopment of Buckeye Village, located on Defiance Drive south of Ackerman Road in the northwest section of campus, hinting at the complex’s demise. The university announced in November 2016 that it would demolish about 50 apartments to make way for the Covelli Center for athletics. Ohio State spokesman Ben Johnson said in an email that the university is in the process of negotiating a lease agreement with the privately owned University Village apartments, located less than a half-mile away. Residents living in Buckeye Village’s 89 apartments would have the option of renting a University Village apartment for two years, beginning with the 2020-21 school year. Students’ rates would be subsidized by the university to match current Buckeye Village rates. ( . . . ) Parts of Buckeye Village date back to 1948, when World War II veterans and their families came to campus under the GI Bill. When the second phase opened in 1961, the complex had 400 units. Currently, 89 Buckeye Village apartments are occupied. MORE: https://www.thisweeknews.com/news/20191029/ohio-state-announces-plans-to-close-buckeye-village-family-housing-raising-student-concerns

November 20, 20195 yr Ohio State west campus research facility gets $15M from retired CEO of Hilliard public company The retired CEO of a Hilliard public company has donated $15 million toward the Interdisciplinary Research Facility planned for Ohio State University's west campus Innovation District. Joe Chlapaty, who retired at the end of 2017 after 13 years leading Advanced Drainage Systems Inc., and his wife, Linda Chlapaty, pledged the gift toward the fifth floor of lab space in the 305,000-square-foot building. Joe Chlapaty had been treated for atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, at OSU's Wexner Medical Center. The research building will house labs for multiple scientific disciplines to work together, including space for raising research animals in a naturalistic environment. It will be co-located with the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center. November 20, 20195 yr Arizona State has had interdisciplinary research buildings since at least 2008 when I went to school there. There were plans for multiple buildings known as Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Buildings. I think they are up to ISTB 6 with 7 under construction now. They also have the Biodesign Institute with a similar initiative housed in three buildings (A, B, and C). Some good stuff has come out of these. Let's hope Ohio State's version is a step ahead.
November 25, 20195 yr Rev1 Ventures, Nationwide Children's genetic material production facility could move to Ohio State's planned Innovation District Rev1 Ventures and Nationwide Children's Hospital's manufacturing facility for genetic research could move to Ohio State University's west campus Innovation District, according to an Ohio Third Frontier report. Ohio State does not have signed agreements with either organization yet, a spokesman said, referring further questions to the hospital and Rev1. The five-story Rev1 facility would include offices and laboratories for startups, corporate innovation space and facilities for students, according to a Third Frontier report evaluating the Columbus entrepreneurial service provider's request for renewed funding from the bond-funded state program. ... Quantum's report, based on documentation and interviews with Rev1, said construction would start in 2020. There was no information on the projects' cost or how they would be financed. January 9, 20205 yr More closures in Gateway over the Holidays. District Pourhouse: Figleaf Boutique: Panera Bread: Some of these closures announcements were made last year, but didn't notice them until I was back on campus. District Pourhouse was for some time alone as the one bar/restaurant in Gateway, but only existed in its current state since a re-branding of the former World of Beer in August of 2018. Ugly Tuna became office space and Mad Mex was empty until the opening of Cazuela's second location this past October (I personally found it to be pretty bad Mexican and would not recommend). They are currently retrofiring their entrance and patio/street seating area. Across from Cazuela's in the former Coldstone and Oxley Tavern locations, a Taiwanese restaurant Yong Kang Street should be opening soon. Interior work has been ongoing for some time now. It what was once Gateway's management office next to Jimmy Johns is going to be an esports facility, Game Arena. This photo was taken in October, and a newer facade has since been completed. The management office appears to have moved into a section of the former Aveda Institute location on High Street, however much of this large storefront is visibly vacant. Between Campus and Kroger, the newer developments of The Highline at Nine, Uncommon Columbus and Luxe Belle all have multiple retails spaces which have remained untouched since building completion. The former Stop&Shop (previously a 7/11) which was used as a staging area for Luxe Belle also remains vacant. TL;DR - Recent Gateway closures: Panera Bread, Figleaf Boutique, and District Pourhouse. Near future openings: Game Arena and Yong Kang Street. Multiple retail vacancies remain in recently completed buildings on High between Campus and Kroger. Edited January 9, 20205 yr by NorthShore647
January 9, 20205 yr I feel like Gateway can't keep a tenant for more than a year. What gives? And I'm surprised that Panera left. I stopped there frequently.

Campus Partners are a bunch of ass clowns, they need to stick to their guns and treat Gateway as what it was originally planned to be and that is a fun place to work and play. Problem is they didn't like the play part and jacked up rent to make doing any business there not feasible. Hell I can remember in college them trying to bust the original Cazsuelas so much and now they had to let them into Gateway to keep occupancy up. They need to turn the retail portion over to a property management company so they can start filling this stuff up and stop renting to themselves(aka OSU).
January 9, 20205 yr That Lane Ave Panera should have never been allowed to be built as is. And that I think is the bigger tragedy. As for gateway, I think part of it has been that so much of the business models of many of the tenants generally rely heavily on students. I think that more competitive rents, more permanent non student residents nearby, infill from the North Short North to Gateway etc will help but it might. And what a more community minded retail scene looks like, I'm not sure but I'm sure there are ideas out there that could help turn it into something that attracts more than students and visitors potentially. I don't ever get terribly worried about the turnover here. There are much denser neighborhoods in Chicago that struggle for retail as well. It's a tough spot being so student heavy IMO.
January 27, 20205 yr Looks like the University District has put up a webcam for the WOSU / 15th & High project. Enjoy. https://www.universitydistrict.org/news/2019/10/22/watch-wosu-grow
January 27, 20205 yr I graduated OSU in 2004. I remember that with RPAC, the new Ohio Union, Oval renovation, etc. all in progress at the time, I thought that it would be really lucky to be entering school there in 2005--you'd finally have a finished campus instead of a permanent construction zone. I see now that Campus Partners and the other powers that be had more embraced the cosmology of the ourobouros. The Ohio State University will always be dying, always be being born, never grown, always growing.
January 27, 20205 yr I don't think anyone anticipated the effects that Universal Couchlock would have on campus areas. When the projects from the 2000s were proposed, everyone thought things would just be a continuation of '90s hustle and bustle at all hours of the day. Losing Christmas and partially losing summertime didn't matter. Nowadays, so much of the college experience revolves around sitting at a computer that it's much harder to make money in the physical space. It doesn't help that all the buildings get replaced with high rent new ones that make it even harder to battle Universal Couchlock.
