Metro Schools Planning Renovation of Former Indianola Middle School

Brent Warren - Columbus Underground - May 7, 2021

Indianola-Middle-School_5.jpg

"Metro Schools is looking to move its 6th-through-12th graders into the former Indianola Middle School in the University District. Columbus City Schools sold the long-vacant building – located on about nine acres of land at 420 E. 19th Ave. – to Ohio State University in 2018. The Columbus Board of Education initially agreed to sell the building in 2017, but the transaction was delayed as the two parties struggled to craft a memorandum of understanding that they could both sign off on. The move is part of a larger expansion plan for Metro, a STEM-focused charter school that is currently located at 1929 Kenny Rd."

JK repaving first. Still no WOSU marquee yet, either. Hopefully we'll see some street trees on the north side of the street when they get to that new building.

In other OSU news, scrolling through their Master Planning agenda for tomorrow, the university is looking to acquire 11th Avenue so they can convert it to 2-way and move traffic off of 12th Ave (I don't know if they're meaning to completely pedestrianize 12th or just greatly reduce traffic load). Bus routes, etc. would move to 11th as part of their larger transportation master plan. OSU also owns the entirety of parcels that face 11th and are looking at the larger future of this area.

I wonder if this will include 11th being two-way between College and High, or just between Neil and College. I would think that you would need a signal at High if traffic were allowed to turn left from 11th.

Ohio State worried about rising construction costs for new $1.8B hospital

The one thing I took from this, is that maybe the increase in wood prices will push developers to go taller and use steel framing instead of wood. Could be a positive in the end, but who knows.

We do have some risk,” said Jay Kasey, senior vice president of administration and planning at OSU, at a board of trustees committee meeting Thursday morning.

There is $1.5 billion left to spend on the project, including $480 million that has not been contracted out yet, Kasey said. The inpatient hospital is the largest single construction project in OSU history.

“If we blow it by 8%, it’s a problem,” Kasey said.

Trustee Bob Schottenstein, CEO of homebuilder M/I Homes, noted that the hospital project has a $120 million contingency, “not one cent of which has been used yet.”

“If it’s not all used, we’ll celebrate,” Schottenstein said. “I think we just need to be prepared. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do. We’re not going to cut the quality of the project, at least that would be my strong position.”

Schottenstein said it's a good thing the project is not using much wood.

^The irony is that lifting the regulation that forbid buildings over 3 stories being built from wood certainly had to exacerbate the lumber situation!

As promised we're about to see the eastern-most wing of Starling Loving coming down this month -- mostly interior preparations have been occurring thus far but June is when we'll be able to watch the action.

The masonry work is also starting on the new anatomy wing of Hamilton. I'm curious to see how much of the shell they finish as there will be a bridge portion on the upper floors that connect it to the next new building.

Updates on the OSU Arts District buildings. Steel going up at the Department of Theatre. Music building continues masonry work and interior work. You can see also the new, much narrower College Ave as they install new curbs, etc. They're revising how the bus drop-offs in this area work and giving more space and streamlined circulation back to the pedestrian realm.

I'm curious if the work at the oval-end will include a re-aligning of the road to smooth that sharp curve?

True for cars, but I know the buses have a hard time staying in their lane there.

Designing the 15th and High Urban Framework Plan and Development in Columbus, Ohio

In 2013, the non-profit redevelopment corporation Campus Partners, MKSK, and University senior leadership came together to envision a future for the private and University-owned land on the east side of High Street across from The Ohio State University’s main campus surrounding the intersection of 15th Avenue and High Street.

The 15th & High Street Urban Framework Plan was developed as the new vision for this “Gateway” to the University and the surrounding neighborhood and established the commitments Campus Partners would make to the improvement of the 15th and High District and well-being of the community as a result of the future rezoning of the area.

The Framework Plan established design guidelines for the six-block area that satisfies both key urban design and economic feasibility considerations with the following goals...

Not sure what it entails, but upon driving by on high, there is some movement with equipment on site but without a closer look I can't tell if it means ground is broken or just moving stuff around as the other projects wrap up. Hopefully someone can get a closer look to see better.

We finally have a rendering of the Dodd garage.

I drove by this morning on E. 15th. It just looks like a construction yard for the three buildings under construction.

i remember reading in The Lantern a couple years ago that it would have at least 120 rooms and be around 11 stories tall, but of course that might not be the plan now...

I'm tired of seeing the important "third places" near campus being filled with chains.

High St by campus is just getting more and more basic.

That’s what OSU and Campus Partners wants - a place that seems familiar to suburban and small town parents and students. I won’t be surprised when first Applebee’s opens, Target broke that seal.

The bro trucks with the wheels that look like barrels cut in half still come -- despite higher admission requirements.

It would be nice if at least the few blocks of High north of Lane isn't completely replaced with new development. It's one of the last places on High Street that still has a gritty vibe and some old bars and non-chain restaurants left. Plus, there's already a pretty good street-wall from Lane to around Patterson. Don't get me wrong, I love all the new development, but I do think it leaves a huge void in terms of campus culture to have nothing but overpriced chains everywhere. Ideally, I'd like to see Old North Columbus and SoHud remain less polished and corporate than elsewhere around campus.

Campus now looks like what I hated about UT-Austin 10 years ago.  I made fun of their lack of bars, etc and now that's what my alma mater has become, it's sad.  I said almost the same exact thing when I found out Lucky's was for sure closing, it's a double edged sword.

College isn't so much about bars for a lot of kids these days. More like video games, Magic the Gathering and Pokemon

Edited by GCrites80s

The increasing quality of education at Ohio State is exactly why campus is becoming more basic.  Those types of parents aren't impressed by the "gritty" bar feel when they visit. They want to see a nice clean campus area.  They certainly aren't impressed by frat bros throwing up right across from campus.  I wonder how long it will be before Campus Partners can eliminate their last hurdle, Midway.  If Newport wasn't such an interesting building, I bet that area would have already been redeveloped.

I went to OSU(started in 82)and always felt the bar scene stuff was overrated. How many students really choose a university based on nearby grit and(mostly rundown)bars? I don't have any rose colored glasses view of much of High, especially South Campus. And I would rather have High and the Short North be as they are/becoming now than the slummy thing they were 40 years ago. I can appreciate history, older buildings, architecture, density, cultural differences and even grit without loving decay, dysfunction and decline.

*Since I was swaddled in OSU baby clothing since birth, there was really no option for me-I was expected to go to OSU or not get $$$$ to pay for it.

Short North still has character and is unique. High Street by campus is cookie cutter and the same as any other big university or suburban strip. I understand that is more for future parents of students, but it is rather disappointing.

Believe it or not, the Agronomy majors have quite the button-down reputation in farming. Of course that is in adulthood.

The grimy stuff does have a place. Should it be front and center? Perhaps not unless you want to build your brand as such. It's interesting to see where the people who hang out in the grit wind up 20 years later though. A lot of those daily bar guys become top-performing salesmen. Punks have a strange knack for finding good corporate jobs as adults, followed fairly closely by the alternative rock crowd. Metalheads are a crapshoot.

Whether these "future" parents want to admit it or not the social aspect of college is just as valuable as what occurs on the west side of High.  Many of the people I went to 'Beat the Clock' and 'Ugly Hour' with are now employed by some of the top startups in the city and state.

I hope Midway never goes away or Out'R'Inn, Little Bar, the Library, etc.  The building/block that housed Bernie's was an absolute mess physically. But the fact that Gateway virtually doesn't exist anymore is ridiculous and as mentioned it's because of Campus Partners.

Again, all of it is a double edged sword.
