^I agree, the building is just too massive. It's longer than the dorms to the south.

Not sure if I remember this including the CVS building. Here are renderings for the 2180 N High development. Looks like the building with Kung Fu Tea will remain.

Edit: glad to see the one story CVS potentially replaced

I hate this so much. I'm not even against development here. But they should make some effort to preserve the historic storefronts and set the tall part of the building back a bit. It would kind of kill the whole vibe of that block which is one of the last parts of High Street with most of the historic storefronts preserved. It would kind of take the "old" out of Old North Columbus. Is there any local commission that would make them revise this?

There is an article on Columbus underground and it talks about how the commission is opposed to the tear down of the old apartment, so it has a chance of not passing

Walgreens to replace Urban Outfitters near Ohio State

Owen Milnes - Columbus Business First - Oct. 29, 2021

"National pharmacy chain Walgreens is taking over the 11,000-square-foot High Street building previously occupied by Urban Outfitters, said Jared Schiff, executive vice president of Schiff Properties. Schiff Properties owns the building at 1782 N. High St., close to the Ohio State University campus."

Another chain smh.  Agree it's good the structure is being retained.  Would've been nice if Chums made a comeback in that location

Did the UO (not to be confused with Urban Ohio, lol) move? I didn’t hear anything about them closing stores. They are all over the place here in LA and that one in Columbus has been around since the mid ‘90s when I started going there. I enjoyed it more back then when it was truly unique.

So many major campuses around the country have an UO, it would be odd for OSU not to have one. Retail around campus is strangely lacking.

According to the article, they moved to Easton:

”Schiff said the apparel retailer vacated the site earlier this year after the two parties could not reach an agreement on an extension of its lease. It has since opened a new store at Easton Town Center.”

Thank you. I wasn’t able to read the article as I’m not a subscriber. Good to know they are still in the Columbus market, but it makes for a less interesting campus retail environment.

Good call.

“A developer has been sent back to the drawing board after presenting a proposal to demolish five buildings and construct a six-story 143-unit student housing building on a block of North High Street.

Athens, Georgia-based Landmark Properties showed the University Impact District Review Board conceptual plans for the development bounded by Lane Avenue, Norwich Avenue and Pearl Alley.

A University District resident spoke against historic buildings being torn down. Commissioners encouraged the developer and architect to rework the plan to keep more of the existing buildings on the site for reuse.

Commissioners encouraged a more dense development focused on the CVS site. The developer will have to return to the board before moving forward with the project.”

Interested in seeing what they come back with, hopefully they go dense and present a 10 story

I like the idea of a taller tower right at Lane and High. I think the max height allowed per the University District plan along High is 6 floors. Perhaps the developer can leverage restoring the existing row houses into allowing a taller building at the corner.

We've got multiple 13-floor dormitory buildings adjacent to Lane just west of here, I think there would be a great argument for some real height right here. Plus the views towards the city would be excellent on the highest floors.

I feel like if the commission is asking for more density at the cvs location, they would have to go higher than 6. Who knows though and hopefully they come back with something good.

Significant work on the Health Sciences next phase of work -- site has been dug for the basement of the next wing, elevator cores are going up south of the remaining wing of Starling-Loving, and facade work continues on Hamilton Hall expansion. I'm curious how long until we see the existing utilities that currently sit on the ground where the future enclosed atrium space will be -- those two trees are certainly not staying there either long-term.

Yesterday, OSU held a ground breaking ceremony for the new Energy Advancement and Innovation Center at the corner of Lane and Kenny. Does anyone have renderings?

I didn't realize this project was separate from the Interdisciplinary Research building.

Not really sure, but the building in the background might be a peek at it.

D334CE61-4226-40F4-8301-C92629F59006.jpeg

So they've been digging down a lot where the old E wing of Starling-Loving was...

A very significant depth:

And yet the floorplans for the new building does not indicate any basement level below the new terrace, just the footprint of the new build. These are also the plans as reviewed 2 years ago, but I'm curious to see what the reason is for all of this [seemingly extra] excavation.

Those lots were so deep. This is a huge combined parcel.

Just saw that the Building the Future page for the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center has been updated with what I think is a new rendering:

Last week, CBF ran an article in the supply chain doomsday genre about OSU’s projects. Some of the biggest highlights I noticed:

- Construction on Ohio State's new lacrosse stadium is scheduled to start in January, a delay from its initial start date. The stadium will include home and visiting game day locker rooms, a 6,700-square-foot concourse level grandstand, and an indoor shooting room and other event space. The facility is scheduled to open January 2023 [This was initially supposed to start this fall.].
- The timeline for the Interdisciplinary Research Facility is being tracked. The full building enclosure is expected to be completed in December. The Innovation District is expected to generate $3 billion in direct and indirect economic impact, we previously reported, while bringing startups and Fortune 500 companies to the region

- Structural steel construction is underway for Wexner Medical Center's new tower. The north and south elevator shafts are up to level 14. The inpatient facility is scheduled to open in early 2026. The report given to the board stated the project was being monitored for time because of supply chain delays [It appears to be higher than 14 at this point. To me, it looks closer to 18/19, but it’s really hard to tell.].

More updates can be found in the full article:

Foundation is getting dug out and steel has started to arrive on site for the former Cousin’s redevelopment. Hopefully This means we’ll see it go vertical before long.

Unrelated, but the Freakonomics podcast had a good episode on Trader Joe's a few years back.  They briefly went into how Trader Joe's picked locations...or rather, if there was causation (or merely a correlation) between where they picked locations for stores and the near-term impact it had on real estate prices in the area.  (They also covered the history/founding of the store, what makes them different, how they don't use algorithms to track your spending and target you with ads/coupons, etc.)

Very Stable Genius

My guess is that they are extremely deft at timing when a vicinity is appreciating in just the right manner and striking at that time to just happen to be a part of the boost. They give it that last little push over the cliff. As Spinal Tap would say

Am I right?
