A dive bar closing will be the saddest day of your life? How privileged you must be.

No one can afford them, but developers keep building them. Interesting business plan. I love measuring my campus's personality by dive bars.

There are no dive bars left in the Short North. So obviously that's not what students are drawn toward. Also, the Short North may as well blend with the UD now. Easily accessible via transit and rideshare if not on foot/scooter/bike. The success of the Short North is what has drawn students, not the supposed decline of the UD.

I don’t think it’s necessarily just the success of the short north that’s drawing them. It’s the fact that there really aren’t any options on campus. When I was there from ‘06-‘11 we had around 20, now I believe there are 10 or less. But we still went to the Arena District on certain nights, however most of those places no longer exist as well. Again the reality is they have no other options.

I see this as a positive and agree there really isn’t a difference between the neighborhoods and districts at this point. A much different landscape than 12-17 years ago(now I’m going to go put some icy hot on my back).

To play devil's advocate, those new places will probably cost double or triple what the old school campus dive bars cost. But yeah, I don't really lament dive bars dying off. There's still plenty in Old North and Fouth/Summit.

They essentially became slumlords to Charlie Bear and I believe Tuna as well. I know that there was a city violation of some sort with CB and under their lease it was the responsibility of Campus Partners to repair. They refused and immediately turned it into university leased office space.

Tuna only closed about 5-6 years ago, but what was McFaddens has not found an occupant for how long?

Point being(and not that I’d use it any way) I wouldn’t hold my breath on this being an “entertainment” destination, at least not for long if CP is involved.

Ohio State is planning to build a new facility for its hockey teams

"Among the agenda items for this week’s Board of Trustees meeting is a proposal to build a new ice rink for the men’s and women’s hockey programs. Pending Board of Trustees approval, construction would begin in 2024 with a targeted opening of April 2026.

Per the proposal, the new facility will include team locker rooms, an athlete lounge, a dining and nutrition area, support services for the men’s and women’s hockey teams, offices for their coaches and training facilities along with expanded seating capacity and broadcasting capabilities over the current OSU Ice Rink. The new rink would be located in the Athletic District off of Fred Taylor Drive, adjacent to the Covelli Center and the newly opened Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.

While the men’s hockey team currently plays its games at the Schottenstein Center, the women’s hockey team still plays at the current Ice Rink which is located next to St. John Arena and only seats about 1,000 people."

The Rambler is the project on Lane (where Harrison House was).  I don't recall hearing a name for the E 7th project yet.

On a side note-  have you guys noticed how many projects around the city appear ready to start vertical construction?

I was jotting down a quick list off the top of my head a few days ago, of projects that look like they should/could go vertical in the next 30 days and I came up with at least fifteen!

Ohio State University taps New York-based Tishman Speyer to plan Carmenton's next phase

“The next phase of Ohio State University’s Carmenton innovation district project is moving forward. New York-based real estate company Tishman Speyer will team up with SciTech, the OSU real estate affiliate responsible for the west campus district, to develop the master plan for the mixed-use area that will include residences, restaurants, community spaces and more.

"The momentum at our innovation district has attracted one of the country’s top developers," Alex Fischer, university trustee and chair of the Master Planning and Facilities Committee, said in a news release. "Tishman Speyer has a well-earned, international reputation for inspirational and connected communities. We are so excited to see this plan unlock the full potential of this vibrant new district in partnership with the university, JobsOhio and the city of Columbus."

Construction continues on the district's first phase, with some components set to open in the coming months.

The planning process for the next phase is set to begin this month with internal and external stakeholder presentations through the first half of this year.”

Still doesn’t look awesome, curious to see how the commission responds. They barely did anything that was asked.

It's still pretty bland and probably the smallest retail space they could fit, but my guess would be it gets approved given the monstrosity across the street (highline @ nine 🤮)

Bier Stube demolition project moves forward with commission approval

“A six-story, 95-unit apartment building proposed at North High Street and West Ninth Avenue was unanimously approved by the University Area Commission Wednesday night, as developers returned with promises to work with small business owners facing impending eviction. With the commission’s blessing, developers must face the University Impact District Review Board before they can pitch the project to the city.

Also new to the pitch were assurances that Garland – who has led design of the project – has been communicating with the owners of Bier Stube to rent the commercial space in the new building. There’s been “quite a bit of interest,” Perry said.

Commissioners expressed appreciation of the outreach, with some admitting that the building Bier Stube occupies might be on borrowed time, regardless if Buckeye Real Estate’s proposal goes through.”

OSU unveils 3D printer that can create buildings

"Those involved say the process can be used to erect buildings faster, with fewer workers and less waste than conventional construction, and can play a key role in addressing the nation's housing shortage.

Pantheon delivered the machine to OSU in January to research how to best use 3D technology (called "additive manufacturing") in the real world. OSU officials hope to use the machine and a team of experts from different departments to become a national authority on building with 3D printers.

The COBOD printer works like other 3D printers: material is extruded from a moving nozzle, layer upon layer, guided by a pattern programmed into the machine.

Dale Nehls, a representative of Quikrete, said the company's material has been used to "print" six homes in Virginia, Texas and California, including one two-story, 4,000-square-foot home in Houston. He said he expects the technology to become far more common in the years to come."
