A very small project but one that adds to the quality of life in the neighborhood. Columbus Rec & Parks is building a set of steps from the Dodridge bridge down to the Olentangy bike path. The sandstone is beautiful.

So happy to see this, anytime we walk by that it made no sense why there wasn’t access right there. You could see the path that showed people using it.

Yeah right on the other side of the bridge is the treacherous dirt path we all use to exit the trail here haha. More access points to the trail the better, it's absolutely beautiful on the trail back in this area and there are so many spots where you can access the river.

Ohio State’s Cannon Drive Project: A Major Campus Transformation Takes Shape

The Ohio State University is in the midst of a project that impacts the Olentangy River corridor, protecting it from future flooding.

The long-planned realignment of Cannon Drive, which straightens and raises the roadway between King Avenue and Woody Hayes Drive, is now in its second phase.

The first phase successfully opened up 12 acres of land for new developments, where a new inpatient hospital is under construction and the Wexner Medical Center Garage is now open.

It does say that further down the article. It is a weird article and seems like it adds the original article with the new one.

NSF-funded center to drive development of US natural rubber industry

"The Ohio State University has been awarded $26 million in federal funding to jumpstart natural rubber production in the United States and enhance workforce development to fuel the new domestic industry.

The U.S. National Science Foundation announced funding today (Aug. 21, 2024) for the creation of the “Transformation of American Rubber through Domestic Innovation for Supply Security” (TARDISS) Engineering Research Center (ERC). The first round of funding will last for five years, with the ability to renew for another $26 million for five additional years.

The ERC will harness the power of nature, creating bridges between engineering, biology and agriculture, to revolutionize alternative natural rubber production from domestic crops: guayule, the TK “rubber” dandelion and mountain gum. The initiative will also help create jobs, train a new and diverse engineering and agricultural workforce, and ease supply chain issues by building a domestic rubber supply.

Disease and high demand threaten the tropical rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis, the world’s primary natural rubber source. In 2019, 10% of the natural rubber supply was lost to disease – and the risk for transmission of South American leaf blight to Southeast Asia has increased with the expansion of direct airline travel between Brazil and China. Collapse of the global supply would disrupt entire economies around the world, researchers predict."

Welcoming the largest ever freshman class and... OSU is out of residence hall space again:

https://www.10tv.com/article/news/local/ohio-state-university-freshman-class-size-off-campus-housing/530-80082098-af3e-4db5-8270-50309c0951e8

They're paying to house some students in "The Point on Lane" and operating it like a Residence Hall: https://housing.osu.edu/resources/second-year-success/the-point-on-lane/

Time for the next phase of new residence halls on South Campus per Framework 3.0 (which, ironically, a major goal is to de-densify residence halls, even though they're already back to cramming more kids in rooms than ever...)

Web_StudentLife.png

They could go back to 16 students per suite in the towers like it was in the '80s - double the capacity right there!

They should maybe build some more towers…

Mass timber project near Ohio State going back before review board

Habor Bay Ventures' project near Ohio State University's campus may move forward this week.

The developer plans to build a 13-story, 183-unit apartment building at 1479 N. High St., the site of beloved campus-area bar, the Bier Stube.

The firm goes before the University Impact District Review Board on Thursday.

Columbus City Council in July approved three variances for the project's height, parking and to change the ground floor use. The final step will be design approval by the board.

I think that this is much better, generally. That being said, I'd like to see something more creative on that black strip - maybe a mural or cool lighting feature. Furthermore, the street level could use a little more detail/ornamentation.

New owners aim to stabilize property near Short North

A North High Street property between the Short North and Ohio State University's campus has changed hands.

There are no plans to redevelop the property.

Many of the 19 apartments are vacant, so those will be renovated with new counters, cabinets and other upgrades.

Savage is in talks with a new restaurant to go into the former E Burger space on the ground floor and said he hopes to keep the Village Idiot.

The Schottenstein Center joins list of area venues up for renovations

Yet another Columbus venue is up for some needed renovations.

Ohio State University trustees approved Thursday $13.5 million in renovations for the Schottenstein Center – specifically, scoreboard and main roof replacements, which would cost $5 million and $8.5 million, respectively.

The Schottenstein Center joins Nationwide Arena and the Greater Columbus Convention Center, structures built in the late 1990s, set to undergo pricey upgrades.

This year, suites at Lincoln and Morrill Towers — the 59-year-old residence halls on the west edge on campus — will have 16 students instead of 10, as had been the case for the last few years.

Dave Isaacs, a university spokesperson, said suites in Lincoln and Morrill Towers were always designed to hold a maximum of 16 students. Ohio State has "flexible and varied room configurations that are designed to offer a range of living options," he said, which "allows the university to effectively accommodate fluctuations in enrollment."

"To accommodate this year’s new first-year class, we will configure many of our spaces to hold higher numbers of residents"

Mass Timber Building Moving Forward, Bier Stube to Close

A plan to build a 13-story apartment building at the southwest corner of High Street and Ninth Avenue is moving forward, meaning that the Bier Stube’s decades-long run as a south campus fixture is coming to an end.

Cleveland-based Harbor Bay Ventures received a Certificate of Appropriateness for the development from the University Impact District Review Board last week. A company representative said that demolition of the three existing buildings on the site – a two-story brick building home to Yau’s Chinese Bistro, the 14-0 Express beer store, and the one-story Bier Stube building at 1478 N. High St. – would begin this fall.

A message posted yesterday on the Beir Stube Facebook page by owner Craig Kempton confirmed that the dive bar would be closing:

“It is with great sadness that I have to let everyone know that The Bier Stube will be closing down for good by the end of September. We have to be out of the building by October 1st. That being said, the last weekend of operations will be the weekend of the 21st. That gives me a week to clear out all the stuff in the building. I’m so sorry I couldn’t save the Stube…more details to follow in the next few days.”

Ohio State Announces Its Creation of the 1922 Club, an “Exclusive, Private Club and Dining Venue” Coming to Ohio Stadium in 2026

"An exclusive, private club will arrive inside Ohio Stadium as soon as 2026.

On Tuesday, Ohio State announced its creation of the 1922 Club, “a speakeasy-style venue” to be constructed inside the east side of Ohio Stadium. The "exclusive, private club and dining venue" will feature dedicated space to watch the Buckeyes on gamedays and a restaurant (open Tuesday through Saturday, excluding gamedays), all while transporting “guests to a bygone era that pays homage to our illustrious history.”

Ohio State plans to open the venue in 2026. Upon completion, the athletic department hopes the club provides 'a gameday experience defined by its spacious lounge-like atmosphere for the only most exclusive members.'"

Ohio State’s main campus welcomes largest-ever freshman class

Enrollment is back up at Ohio State University – and the incoming class is the largest in university history for the Columbus campus.

OSU's main campus has an incoming class of 9,530 students this fall, a nearly 20% increase over 2023's 7,983 students, according to the college's Fifteenth Day Enrollment Report.

Astronomy project co-led by Ohio State receives $4.3 million

"Researchers at The Ohio State University are helping lead the development of an instrument that will transform how astronomers hunt for exoplanets.

Designed to detect the presence of distant worlds by studying tiny color changes in light from the host stars they orbit, iLocater is a next-generation spectrograph that, upon its initial completion next year, will be installed at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) located in Arizona.

Overall, this support, which totals $4.3 million, will help improve broader exoplanet research at the LBT and advance iLocater’s hardware over the next three years. It will also allow the instrument to make detailed measurements of the sun.

Under development since 2013, iLocater will be a second-generation instrument for the LBT, whose research impacts span the full range of modern astrophysics. Notably, iLocater will take advantage of the telescope’s adaptive optics system to peer past the distorting blur of the Earth’s atmosphere to discover and characterize new exoplanets."

Chicago-based developer buys OSU-area church property for $5.1M ahead of demolition

A Chicago-based developer has closed on a site near Ohio State University's campus it plans to redevelop.

Up Campus bought the church property at 82 E. 16th Ave. and a neighboring duplex for $5.1 million, according to Franklin County Auditor's records.

Demolition is planned for the near future, now that the developer owns the property.

This spring, the University Impact District Review Board recommended approval of variances for a five-story apartment building with 76 units. It went to the board of zoning adjustment in July and passed.

Happy to see more housing but still annoyed with what this project ended up being. Original was a 7 story with 229 units and 100+ space parking garage. Now it’s only 76 units, and 5 stories. This area should have been included in the new zoning codes.

I'll push back on that. The original design looked like another boring monolith. I think this new design has much more character and a very timeless appeal. What was proposed before belongs on a much more developed area, and would have required some substantial use of quality materials (brick and limestone) should they have opted to continue with that massing.

I think the in between design was the best. The final version just looks like every other dorm on campus. The middle design had some character.

If the final version is the one on Page 49, I'm pretty happy. Only complaint is having the entire first 3-4 levels clad in brick.

But hey, I can't complain too much. All I need to do is find a way to be the guy to lease all the units and I win regardless.

It will hopefully feel less out of place when the hotel/garage portion of University Square is built across the street. I've heard that project is starting to get some momentum again.

I think a big issue for the Blackwell is that it isn’t affiliated with a major hotel chain. I always try to stay at a hotel under the Marriott umbrella because of the points. Usually I’m trying to redeem points I’ve racked up from business travel or I’m trying to pick a Marriott hotel for business travel to rack up the points for future personal travel. The Blackwell would never be a consideration for me unless I was attending a conference with a special room rate there.
