I can't open the link, but I did see the rendering on the show, I thought it was terrible, and failed to fit in the surrounding neighborhood. Surprise? No.

this bldg does seem to be quite a bit out of context with what Soho is all about.  I dont even mean the scale of the bldgs and architecture, which also does not go together/complement, but rather the lifestyle that makes Soho what it is.

 

Other than that...great bldg!  There is a great location at 5th and Race here in Cincy that would be great for it!!!

What is SoHo geared toward? I'm completely ignorant when it comes to NYC. All I know is that The Village has a lot of smaller rowhouse type buildings and has a concentration of creative/artist type people. Is SoHo and Tribeca supposed to be more affluent?

Although Soho originally became known as an artists' haven, most of the artists were priced out of the area a while ago. A lot of the art galleries have given way to stores like Banana Republic, J. Crew, Pottery Barn, etc. Sure the galleries are there but they no longer represent the creative/artsy types who gave Soho its cache. The lifestyle of Soho as you knew it is now to be found in the Meatpacking District (and Brooklyn for the more up-and-coming types). Soho and Tribeca are now derided by the "creative" types as being yuppiefied.

 

The typical built environment of Soho consists of 4-8 story historic warehouse buildings (usually with cast-iron facades). Here's a pic of a very typical but beautiful building in Soho:

 

That said - I personally like the Trump proposal, and his approach in the video on the web site is targeting the demographic that likes the perceived edginess of living in Soho, enjoys trip-hop/downtempo, etc., but have the financial wherewithall to buy into such an upscale property. Is it out of context with 4-8 story warehouse buildings? Absolutely - but as someone on the skyscraperpage.com forum said - "if people don't like a tower being built in Manhattan, they have an entire continent ready to be filled with their mediocre low-rise hovels"  :-D

 

Thanks for the info MayDay. I agree...In Manhattan what do you expect? As expensive as land is, it makes sense to build higher and higher.

Good point I guess.....I would just like it to work contextually instead of trying to capitalize on the Mahattan market. :|

SUMPTUOUS IN SOHO: Donald Trump, daughter Ivanka and son Donald Trump Jr. are taking their developing act to SoHo. Above is a rendering of their planned 45-story luxury hotel tower.

 

 

June 5, 2006 -- Donald Trump is submitting plans to construct a 45-story luxury high-rise condominium hotel on the outskirts of SoHo, The Post has learned.

 

And barring any glitches in the approval process, groundbreaking on the structure at 246 Spring, between Varick St. and Sixth Avenue, is expected to begin before the end of this year, according to Donald Trump Jr. - who, along with his father and sister Ivanka, is overseeing the project.
