Posted June 8, 200619 yr My second time to the outdoor event, and again I missed the parade. Gay Pride parades got started as a political activist event, and the fight for rights still goes on, 30 years on from Stonewall...as we saw from that gay marriage amendment thing. While I was here I signed some petitions and joined the HRC. Various tables and groups.... The gay-friendly granny.... This church is actually out in the suburbs, in affluent Washington Township. The story is that the minister was originally in charge of a Methodist church in Centerville, and when he came the congregation split. The Methodists kicked him out or asked him to leave, and he took about half the congregation with him to found Cross Creek, which is now off of 725 in Washington Township. Interesting that two of the gay-friendly churches in the area, Cross Creek and the Unitarians, are out here in the suburbs... even some straight folks came to check out the scene.... An early Dayton skyscraper visible... the Republic Building, now the RTA bus hub and food court People having a good time.... Dancing to a gay country singer A few queens.... Our MCs.... Drag perfomer and chorus line.... The chorus line from A Chorus Line, which is showing at a suburban dinner theatre... Marching band and drill corps visiting from Cincy Joe Lacey, on the Dayton School Board. One of Ohio's very few openly gay elected officials. I've known Joe for years and he has really labored hard in the political vinyards for the Democrats...including run for state rep in no-hope races like my district in Centerville. More drag performers Country bad girl....riffing on Dayton's redneck/briar side..... Dolly Parton style.... Diva.... The fountain was a good opportunity to take some pix... Sitting next to the fountain, taking snapshots of the passing parade.... ...this guy was an early AIDS activist, and has done alot of volunteer work for the community.... I think this guy is the owner of Argos, which is a relatively new levi-leather-BDSM bar... This guy is a bartender at the venerable "Stage Door Musical Bar"..the oldest gay bar in Dayton and one of the oldest in Ohio... I like this guys look. I imagine this is someone from the pre-Stonewall "Boys in the Band" era. Straight family... Reminds me of that Sly and the Family Stone song...Everyday People....
June 8, 200619 yr Looks like a "gay" old time! Sorry, had to do it... "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 8, 200619 yr  Faaaaabulous Thread! Excellent photos, big, beautifully diverse turnout, and it looks like people were having fun! Thank for showing this event!
June 8, 200619 yr Definitely, very fun! Great people-watching thread too! And it's great to see the Queen City Rainbow Band came up for it...I believe they march in all the Cincinnati Pride events, as well as some other things, like the Northside 4th of July Parade...
June 8, 200619 yr Wonderful! Good to see crowd scenes, like Bonjour's historical Toledo shots ... but quite a different crowd ... Yay Jeff! Yay Dayton! Different strokes, for different folks ... and folks is folks ...
June 8, 200619 yr Too bad Toledo doesn't do pride parade or festival. They have some get-together pride picnic in a private park in the boondocks east of Northwood, Ohio in the month of August. They have some events like catered food and music on the Boyer Ship which you have to pay $75 to get in; and there's Gay Day at Cedar Point on Father's Day. Although some bars and clubs celebrate pride within their establishment, but as far as going out to the public and enjoy--forget about it. I don't understand it. There are a lot of gays and lesbians in this region.
June 8, 200619 yr What would a Gay Pride Parade be without guys in leather and a smattering of drag queens! Cincinnati's is this weekend! www.prideisalive.com
June 8, 200619 yr Nice shots. Stage Door was the very first gay bar I ever went to. It holds a special place . . . Cincinnati's Pride is this weekend. Columbus has their parade June 24th.
