April 10, 200619 yr Well, that's understandable. Now I don't know how large land purchases like this really work, but I'd think that it would take a while to work out the details. And if both sides agree to go beyond the 'deadline' there shouldn't be any problem with that. EDIT: I found a link to a new article by Golfstyles. It goes more into depth about the golf course, who may be building it, etc. There's also a new overhead diagram/map of the development. There's a name of a developer, I think, in the left bottom corner though it's pretty small and hard to read. Can anyone make that out? The map looks expanded all the way to the lake, too, and different than the past ones. I'd say it's worth a read.. http://www.golfstyles.net/ohio/e-magazine/2006-03/005-business-amherst.htm
April 10, 200619 yr That is a map of Lakeview Bluffs the resort out in Lake County. But the article is about Cleveland Quarries... very interesting..
April 10, 200619 yr lol..someone should probably notify them about that. I was wondering how a huge river and a pennisula I never knew about suddenly appeared there. And Lakeview Bluffs.. new resort development? I hadn't heard about it until now. It looks interesting though.
May 18, 200619 yr going....going.....gone? Quarry deal questioned MATT SUMAN, Morning Journal Writer 05/18/2006 ELYRIA -- After nearly six months of negotiations with no deal in place, at least one county official says his confidence in the proposed $1.5 billion development of Cleveland Quarries is waning. County Administrator Jim Cordes earlier this year touted the development -- which officials have said would include shopping and residential areas, as well as a golf course and resort in South Amherst Village and Brownhelm and Amherst townships -- as the ''story of the year.''
May 18, 200619 yr Well, I'm still optimistic about it. I mean you'd kinda figure that a $1.5 billion deal would take a while to work the details out. They can't really rush something that large..
May 18, 200619 yr I always thought somehow this project was destined to flop at some stage in the game. The whole idea just sounded crazy to me.
May 19, 200619 yr Devil’s in the details for $1.25 billion Quarries project Brad Dicken The Chronicle-Telegram The deal to build a 900-acre development was supposed to close in March, but two months later the parties involved are still trying to reach an agreement. That doesn’t mean the $1.25 billion deal is dead, said Patrick Gallagher, a spokesman for American Stone, which owns a large portion of Cleveland Quarries where the bulk of the project will be built. “It’s definitely still alive and the parties are talking,” he said. http://www.chroniclet.com/2006_Archive/05-19-06/Daily%20Pages/051906local4.html
June 3, 200619 yr Cordes says his optimism 'renewed' for quarry project ALEX M. PARKER Morning Journal Writer 05/25/2006 ELYRIA -- A day after meeting with two European developers working with a British-based company on the proposed Cleveland Quarries re-development, County Administrator Jim Cordes said he has ''renewed optimism'' the project will see the light of day. Last week, Cordes said he had only ''guarded optimism'' the $1.5 billion plan to build a world-class resort, championship golf course, shopping and housing over 900 acres of dormant quarry in South Amherst Village and Brownhelm and Amherst townships would come to fruition. Yesterday, Cordes said he met with two ''potential collaborators'' that he said could team up with Trans European Securities, the English developer that originally proposed the deal.
June 18, 200618 yr From the 6/14/06 Elyria Chronicle-Telegram: Quarries developer locks in financing to buy property Joseph Medici The Chronicle-Telegram The European company that wants to build a $1.25 billion development at the Cleveland Quarries site has the financing to buy the property, according to Ron Twining, county community development director. But the purchase could still take another four months. TransEuropean Securities, the company behind the project, has received preliminary site plan and zoning approvals and has acquired the funding needed for the project, Twining said, but construction can’t start until the land is purchased. http://www.morningjournal.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=16786367&BRD=1699&PAG=461&dept_id=566374&rfi=8
June 20, 200618 yr hmm..nice. That's interesting how Twining mentions Lorain County is now switching over to a service economy, instead of the industrial economy its had for the longest time.
July 7, 200618 yr New article I uncovered, about regional development around Cleveland. There's a mention of the Quarries Proj. near the end. A good read: http://www.bxmagazine.com/article.asp?ID=493
July 7, 200618 yr "Once the sale goes through, the first phase of the project — a golf course — could open as early as 2009....Subsequent phases of the 900-acre project are scheduled to include the construction of residential, entertainment and shopping areas over the next 30 years." i find it fishy, err i mean interesting, how given all the development they have been talking about, the highrises, all the housing, the quirky quarry waterpark, the marina, the airport....that the first thing they are going to build is a....golf course. things that make ya go hmmm.
July 9, 200618 yr ooo a golf course by the time Pesht, The Avenue, and Stonebridge, University Circle stuff is scheduled for completion... i know ill be hanging out in Amherst!
July 10, 200618 yr Yesssssss. More golf courses. Actually a real well designed championship golf course can be a real economic benefit, as well as a selling point for the housing etc.
July 10, 200618 yr ^ sooner if they are relying strictly on pre-sales and sales then you can slice a billion plus bucks off the project - lol. as for a championship course? well, that's what i always said this project was at best, a golf course housing development! ohio already has the muirfield standard. inverness in toledo? how ya gonna beat those? maybe they can, good luck. heck, there is already a golf course/housing development combo just north of this in lorain's far west end. it's called oak hills and was built out in the 1970's. been there, done that already in the area. i wonder if the whole thing is a hoax? that would be, err par for the course for lorain county, which has a long history of crazy schemes like this that never came to be.
August 22, 200618 yr 'Heavy-hitters' to join group planning to build $1.5 billion quarry resort MATT SUMAN, Morning Journal Writer 08/22/2006 SOUTH AMHERST -- British investors planning a $1.5 billion resort project in South Amherst appear to be close to a deal with American Stone to buy 900 acres of quarry land, nearly five months after missing a self-imposed deadline to reach an agreement. But the deal between American Stone and Trans European Securities could be different than the $15.25 million deal both sides agreed to in principle last year because another group of ''heavy hitters'' are expected to come aboard with Trans European, according to County Administrator Jim Cordes. ''There's some different options on the table that are unique,'' he said. I feel some news coming up soon here with this whole thing.. How did you know?!
August 22, 200618 yr oh lame, have i mentioned that i hope this thing fails? we dont need more ridiculous sprawl
August 22, 200618 yr The Trans European investors involved in the project have been away on vacation since last month, but they are returning soon, Schildhouse said. The original deadline to complete the deal was March 31. give me a break. this is bizzare. if you want to get something done, you do it, especially with this kind of money. it sounds like they are playing with inherited money and didn't make it themselves.

August 24, 200618 yr the problem with that new article is that it did not say a thing. reminds me of that whacky key eagles 'hotel california' line: "they stabbed it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast."

October 26, 200618 yr Nah, I didn't feel that one, but... *meditates and looks into future* I feel some more news coming up soon here..?
November 14, 200618 yr Well I guess I miscalculated my future prediction skills on that one. But seriously, there's gotta be some news on this happenin any time now.
November 16, 200618 yr please you guys...you can't kill what never was. never trust the brits, they dragged us into two world wars. heh. seriously the whole thing was a farce. how lorain county to be taken in by wacky schemes like that. oh well. for a positive spin, look for a decent golf course around there someday.
December 6, 200618 yr Well if it is dead, don't you think there would at least be some news about that? I'd like to hear something one way the other. Ah well, I guess I'll have to test out Corner Alley tonight and get my inquisitive mind off this for now..
January 16, 200718 yr Is there a unspoken policy (or spoken) on UO that dictates when a project is moved from the "Projects and Construction" container to the "Abandoned" container?
January 16, 200718 yr i'm waiting for a definitive announcement, or when people like you bump these old posts.
January 23, 200718 yr There was just another big article this past Sun. in the morning journal about this. I can't remember exactly what it said but basically just said the project is still going foward, talks have been going on between Ron Twining, Jim Cordes & Neil Pike...and of course the Quarries owner. They are ironing the details out basically, and told people to get a grip and be patient because Big Stuff like this takes time, DANG IT! I'll try to find and post the article later on if I get some time. It is back from the Dead! for now.
January 24, 200718 yr not exactly, there is no new news here. the locals players are just summarizing up all the time and money they spent. the mystery brit developers and even their lawyer spokesperson were unavailable for comment and remain in the shadows. :| County spends $450,000 on quarry MATT SUMAN, Morning Journal Writer 01/24/2007 ELYRIA -- Over the past two years, Lorain County government has spent $450,000 toward plans for developing a $1.5 billion resort in South Amherst, while county department heads have seen their 2007 budgets cut and the commissioners have mentioned a possible sales tax increase. In December 2005, British-based Trans European Securities agreed to in principle to buy 900 acres of American Stone Corp.'s property near the SR 133 and Quarry Road. The parties announced that the deal was expected to close in March 2005, but it still has not yet been finalized. http://www.morningjournal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17743049&BRD=1699&PAG=461&dept_id=46371&rfi=6
March 8, 200718 yr From crainscleveland.com: Quarry deal crumbles By SCOTT SUTTELL 2:25 pm, March 8, 2007 Quarry operator American Stone Industries Inc. March 10, 200718 yr pd: Quarry project plans fall through Developer lacks money for S. Amherst land Friday, March 09, 2007 Molly Kavanaugh Plain Dealer Reporter South Amherst - After four years of missed deadlines, public money and great excitement, the $1.25 billion deal to turn 900 acres of woods and quarries into an upscale housing and entertainment resort has crumbled. American Stone Chairman Thomas Roulston made the announcement Thursday, nearly a year after the contract with British development company Trans European Securities International had expired. Despite numerous assurances from Trans European architect Neil Pike, the company failed to come up with $15.2 million to purchase the property from American Stone, Roulston said. "We've got to make an announcement for our shareholders so they know where we stand," he said. [email protected], 440-324-3788
March 10, 200718 yr I'm kinda glad that this project didn't happen. We have enough sprawl as it is. its only a matter of time before we have "homes from the 200s!" there. be patient
March 11, 200718 yr well whaddaya know? so at last we get the official fork in. hmm, i could never even get up an x-files 'i want to believe' for this, it was just rotten from the start. i feel bad the county and the locals wasted so much money, time and effort on these carpetbagging british shysters. they must have gotten charmed by the accents or something. i feel bad for steele and js too. they sure 'wanted to believe.' ah well, keep your golf clubs cleaned and ready you guys, that might still happen someday.

April 4, 200718 yr From the 3/15/07 Elyria Chronicle-Telegram: Land quadruples in value, becomes hard sell Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram The value of land where the $1.25 billion quarry project was slated to be built more than quadrupled in value between 2005 and 2006. While the deal between landowner American Stone and developer Trans European Securities appears to have fallen through, American Stone Chairman Tom Roulston said the hike in the property’s value could prevent any developer from purchasing the land. http://www.chroniclet.com/2007/03/15/land-quadruples-in-value-becomes-hard-sell/
April 4, 200718 yr From the 3/23/07 Elyria Chronicle-Telegram: Company still committed to quarry project Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram SOUTH AMHERST — Trans European Securities remains committed to going forward with its $1.25 billion quarry project, the United Kingdom-based developer’s attorney said Thursday. But the company didn’t like how American Stone handled announcing earlier this month that it was cutting off negotiations to sell the land for the project, Trans European attorney Connie Carr said. “I’m disappointed they handled it in such a public manner,” she said. http://www.chroniclet.com/2007/03/23/company-still-committed-to-quarry-project/
April 4, 200718 yr From Cleveland Scene, 3/28/07: Fantasy Island Lorain wants to become the world's most exotic locale. By Jared Klaus Published: March 28, 2007 To get to paradise, you have to park on an unmarked gravel road in South Amherst, just up the street from Piggy's grocery. From there you walk through prickers and mud until you see it in front of you -- just don't walk too far. It's a 125-foot fall down the sheer rock face into the quarry lake below. This is one of seven century-old sandstone mines gouging 1,000 acres of woods in Lorain County. The stones for Severance Hall came from here, but now it's just another headstone in the region's graveyard. http://www.clevescene.com/2007-03-28/news/fantasy-island/
