May 6, 200619 yr I think a lot of Facebook use/activity is superficial, but it can be extemely helpful in finding people through various connections. It has become an important means of contacting groups linked by some interest/history.

August 13, 200618 yr Haha, I know that experience! I lived in Georgia for the year of 1993, I was ten at the time. Just this past school year, I found my best friend from there on facebook. Our families were great great friends and we had lost touch after a while because we had moved so much. It was sooo cool to finally catch up with them, and now, 13 years later, we are going back to Georgia to pay them a visit. It is going to be soo cool to see them again.

SEELYE Microsoft said yesterday that it would provide advertising for Facebook, a Web site aimed primarily at college students, over the next three years. The two did not disclose the terms of the deal, in which Microsoft will be the exclusive seller and provider of banner advertising and sponsored links for Facebook. The site, a social network that allows users to set up pages about themselves, post pictures and create discussions, attracts a youthful demographic that is highly prized by advertisers. The deal follows an announcement earlier this month that Google had agreed to pay a minimum of $900 million over three and a half years to the News Corporation to provide search functions and advertising to MySpace.com, the hugely popular social networking site. Microsoft was one of the competitors for the deal with MySpace, which earlier this month registered its 100 millionth user, compared with Facebook’s 9 million registered users. “It’s basically a consolation prize,’’ Phil Leigh, president of Inside Digital Media, a market research firm specializing in digital media, said of the deal. “But Facebook is also a legitimate test bed, a place where Microsoft can test new technology in a commercial context,’’ he said. “What we’ll see is Microsoft attempt to do some fairly leading-edge type of things, involving banner ads, animation and interactivity,’’ he added. “Whatever technology they develop and use effectively in Facebook, they’ll be able to use it elsewhere.’’ Facebook directs its own advertising now but under the deal will outsource it exclusively to Microsoft until mid-2009. The ads are to start appearing in the fall. Steve Berkowitz, senior vice president of the online services group for Microsoft, said ads would be made for Facebook, but they could also be aimed at any of MSN’s various Internet properties, which have a total of 400 million users worldwide. At the same time, ads running on MSN properties may also appear on Facebook, depending on what audience the advertiser wants to reach. The deal gives advertisers access to Facebook’s audience of young, educated spenders. The site, founded in 2004, was once limited to college students, but with the growing popularity of MySpace, it has allowed access by recent college graduates, high school students and employees of certain companies. Microsoft will link advertisers with this audience using what the companies described in a statement as “graphical ad placements as well as automated text-based advertisements targeted to content, and over time, aggregate user behavior on an anonymous basis.’’ Mr. Berkowitz said the deal was “not comparable to the MySpace deal because we focused on the right economics for both parties.’’ Facebook and Microsoft executives said they began their talks late last week. November 20, 200618 yr Hey, nobody ask me to be friends with you if you haven't met me in person. A few of you slipped by before I introduced that policy. I am continuously deleting obnoxious posts from various people in my world, trying to keep my profile presentable while I look for jobs. Last week some idiot put an inflammatory post on there about some girl I went out with in high school. I got it off there soon enough, I don't think it made its way to her. That's what I'm talking about, people are getting out of control with these sites.

November 20, 200618 yr It seems like theres a lot more ads than there use to be. One of the things I liked about facebook is its simplicity. I don't want to scroll down 40 miles of html and music videos playing on your myspace page--sucking up my bandwidth.
November 20, 200618 yr Let me add everyone's trying to show off how many friends and how much fun they have, that's the currency of both sites, not their professional accomplishments or how they help old women cross streets or whatever. What's funny about it though is they've both been around long enough that you can start to detect personality changes in people, specifically there is one girl I knew when she was 19 and she was a sunny straight-shooter, but recently some rather salty photographs and comments have been showing up on her profile. I haven't seen her in person in almost a year but it's clear that she's inched her toe across the line and there might be no turning back.

That's probably the case since digital photos are free and now everyone has a venue where they can be seen by anyone, not just stuck in some album on a coffee table. I went to an all-boys high school and a few years ago someone set up an alumni website where you can post photos and personal updates. The school has something like 30,000 living alumni and there's maybe 30 posts on there and maybe 50 people have put a photo up over the years. Girls and boys take photos for very different reasons, I'm sure the facebook database would reveal girls are posting 2 or 3 times as many photos as boys. What's so ridiculous is when girls break up with some guy all their girlfirends rush to their facebook profile and write sympathetic posts. It's like you're totally breaking up in public now. And why the hell do people fidget with their profiles all the damn time? There are people who change totally inconsequential information seemingly daily. For me these sites are great tools for keeping up for people you've worked with and are friends with when you move to other cities. It's a huge advantage over networking from before the internet, when you wouldn't even know if you were in the same city as someone you used to be friends with 10 years ago.
November 24, 200618 yr Facebook is ok but I actually prefer Myspace now - guess I'm in the minority here. Facebook is just a little like obsessively spying on everyone in your dorm... especially with the way they report every change you make on your front page now. Myspace is annoying with its ads and spam, but more of my friends use it (those not affiliated with any school, plus relatives, etc. - it's more inclusive), my favorite bands have profiles and blogs there, and you can just do more with it in general.

February 13, 200718 yr I had a myspace page for awhile, but I have since removed it. I can only keep up with a certain number of online forums, personal pages, and news. MySpace didn't make the cut, but with all do respect it was ousted by good competition: UrbanOhio, SSC, SSP, Facebook, Planetizen, Photobucket.
