200-year-old Mt. Pleasant, Ohio -- a hotbed of Quaker abolitionism. The village of 500 people, high on a ridge in the hills of southwestern Jefferson County, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It's a beautiful, intact, community lined with  buildings from the early National Road era (though it's north of the U.S. 40). Brick homes and businesses front directly on the sidewalks. The P.L. Bone Store, a log cabin, was built in 1804. The Friends Yearly Meeting House was built in 1814.
