Pleasant McCook House, Carrollton, Ohio -- The "Fighting McCooks" produced 14 Civil War union officers, including at least fur generals, from two families Carroll County Courthouse, Carrollton Statue of Gen. George Armstrong Custer at his birthplace, New Rumley, Ohio (a bit south of Carrollton) Beautiful downtown Scio, Ohio Harrison County Courthouse, Cadiz, Ohio (birthplace of Clark Gable) Man on the street, Cadiz (actually, my brother and outing partner -- nobody would mistake HIM for Clark Gable) 200-year-old Mt. Pleasant, Ohio -- a hotbed of Quaker abolitionism. The village of 500 people, high on a ridge in the hills of southwestern Jefferson County, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It's a beautiful, intact, community lined with buildings from the early National Road era (though it's north of the U.S. 40). Brick homes and businesses front directly on the sidewalks. The P.L. Bone Store, a log cabin, was built in 1804. The Friends Yearly Meeting House was built in 1814.
