Ollies Trolley, using that prefab trolly diner thing.  The only other surviving version like that that I know of is in Louisville. 

 

 

There is an "indoor" Ollies Trolley in Washington DC

 

 

Ollies was a fast food franchise venture by the developer of KFC and former Kentucky governor John Y Brown Jr.

Kentucky's former governor and Col. Sanders' star-maker found Ollie Gleichenhaus cooking burgers at his restaurant in Miami Beach.

 

Brown ate five burgers, suggested turning the concept into a fast-food franchise and said he could make Ollie a colonel, too, according to "Hamburgers and Fries" by John T. Edge (Putnam's, 2005).

 

"We ain't going to do nothing unless you make me a five-star general," Gleichenhaus told Brown, according to Edge.

 

Gleichenhaus invented the Ollie Burger, complete with 23 seasonings and special sauce. Brown invented the Trolleys, and plunked them on street corners across the country, at least for a few years in the mid-'70s and '80s".  (I thought the orginal Ollies was in NYC or Brooklyn and was in a real trolley. Miami Beach? Oh well.)

One thing I remember about Ollies Trolley (the original chain) was that the burgers where medium rare ..sometimes more rare than that! ...and the fries where spicey.

I gotta give you a lot of credit for marching around OTR like you do and taking pictures.  I'm sorry but every time I've been there I've not felt comfortable enough to get out and walk around.  I usually just appreciate the architecture from the car.  It's not like I'm a suburbanite who's afraid of the city, I live in the innercity, but I just find OTR unsettling. 

 

Anyways... great pictures!  I love local food joints.  For me in Columbus its gotta be the Blue Dube!

You really have to be there to appreciate the state it is in.  I feel no safer in OTR than I would on E55.

Thanks all.   First - that is fascinating about the Ollies Trolley thing - I had no idea.  Thx for those pix and the background research.  Pretty cool.

 

As far as the 'risk' factor - I do pick my spots and timing.  I do respect those that are around and do not put myself in overly tough situations. I cannot stay away from the buildings, etc.

I like Tuckers, but on bright days I have to close my eyes for a few minutes before I go in because it is so dark in there.

The clientele is a mix of street folks, businessmen, professionals & tradesmen.

As usual, my co workers won't go near the place.

I think there are two Tucker's in OTR due to a family dispute.  That's just rumor though, I can't confirm it.

 

Did you ever go to Teez Cafe on Liberty, in an old one-story White Castle?  That place rocked, particularly if you had been drinking heavily for the previous 4+ hours.  Much more convenient than the Ludlow Skyline, and just as effective at neutralizing hangovers.

I think it's open.  It is on Pendleton, across the street from those artist lofts where they have Final Fridays.  It's been about 5 things in the few years I've been down there.  It is WAY outta the way on a dead end street.  Pretty much for the artists up there.   BTW - I have some pics of the Teez place.  I'll post them if I can find them.  Now I know it was an old White Castles that explains why it's so funky looking.  There's nothing in there now.

 

BTW - everyone who cares anything about OTR should eat at Tuckers on Vine at least once.  It's up in the 1600 block north of Liberty.  It has been there since I think 1946 or something.  A 3rd generation Tucker is on the grill and his mom still sits in the corner doing food prep.  It is small, it is greasy, it is cheap, but it is not nasty. A very 'workman-like' crowd, eclectic "where everybody know's your name", "whadda-ya want hon?"  kinda joint.

The Bay Horse was the last place I had a drink before I moved out of Cincinnati.  I think it's closed now since they're refurbishing the Ft. Washington Hotel.  Damn shame.  Is the Bay Horse crew now forced to hang out with those losers at the Phoenix Cafe?

^The Bay Horse closed when some patrons got into a fight, and it ended with a shooting.  They had actually lost their liquor license prior to this, but they continued to sell anyways.  They were shut down quickly after that.

It was on Liberty Street, near Race I believe.  The building is now some wireless phone store.
