Bummer news about the 4-2 loss and Jody Shelley being traded away.  Shelley was always great team player and a class act for Jackets.  If there is such thing as a classly enforcer, Shelley was it.  Probably not unexpected given the team's progression and the number of times he was a healthy scratch this year.  But he will still be missed.  Shelley seemed like a good natured throwback to the "Slap Shot" hockey days.

And who wouldn't want this as the "face" of your hockey team!

So good luck and well wishes to Jody Shelley.  Check out this photo gallery link (below) of Shelley in action.  Sure, its mostly fights.  But its still good times.

Wild 4 - Blue Jackets 1

Jackets going in reverse

Loss is team's third since All-Star break

Sunday,  February 3, 2008 - 7:00 AM

By Aaron Portzline, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

By playing their way into the Western Conference playoff picture more than 50 games into the season, the Blue Jackets finally convinced their fans that it was safe to step back inside Nationwide Arena.  Last night, a throng of 18,529, the biggest crowd in more than a year, showed up to witness the playoff push.

Instead, they got a pushover.  The Blue Jackets lost to the Minnesota Wild 4-1, a game that was pretty much decided after two periods, causing a mass exodus from the lower bowl beginning midway through the third.

Shaq, Manning … and these five NHL teams

By Damien Cox

ESPN

Columbus Blue Jackets (73 points in 2006-07; on pace for 85 this season)

Why we're surprised: When a team is such a well-established loser that it holds the dubious distinction of being the only NHL club never to have qualified for postseason play, you expect that losing culture to continue. Even worse, the team's best young players, Rick Nash and Nikolai Zherdev, seemed to be going sideways last season, which was a main reason why president/GM Doug MacLean lost his job. Finally, the vets the team did have, notably Sergei Fedorov and Adam Foote, appeared to be doing a deep fade as their careers came to an end.

Why we shouldn't have been surprised: Slashing goals-against is still the quickest way to improve in the NHL, and the Jackets have gone from 26th to 16th to seventh this season in terms of keeping the puck out of their net. This was a project right up coach Ken Hitchcock's alley.

• SURPRISE RATING: Four out of five.

WOW!  THIS WAS UGLY!!

Jackets fall back on history in loss

Expansion-era effort stuns coach, angers fans

During the Blue Jackets' six-plus seasons of chronic losing, there were more lopsided losses, certainly.  But the 7-2 humbling by the Chicago Blackhawks last night might be the most painful kick in the gut to date.

Carry the flag? The Blue Jackets might have waved a white one in front of 14,918 fans in Nationwide Arena.  If the playoff hopes aren't dead, they're gasping for air.

Blue Jackets 5, Red Wings 1: From worst to best

Jackets bounce back from loss with huge win

By Aaron Portzline, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DETROIT -- After Wednesday's blowout loss to Chicago, coach Ken Hitchcock predicted the Blue Jackets' season would go in one of two directions: onward and upward toward the playoffs, or down and out to another high draft pick.  Even he couldn't have predicted this.

The Blue Jackets jumped to a three-goal lead in the first period and blew out the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 last night before 20,066 in Joe Louis Arena.

Penalties leave Jackets powerless

Blues get three goals with man advantage

Monday,  February 18, 2008 - 3:09 AM

By Tom Reed, The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets lose 5-1 to the St. Louis Blues.  The Jackets were dominated by a weary Blues team playing its third game in four nights and missing one of its top defensemen.  And though Columbus is still a tantalizing three points out of the final Western Conference playoff spot, it's also 2-5-3 since the All-Star break.

The Jackets not only need to worry about catching teams ahead of them but holding off the ones in pursuit.  With the win, the surging Blues tied Columbus with 63 points and have three games in hand.

Blue Jackets end a three game road trip into Canada with a win at Montreal after winning at Ottawa and losing at Toronto.  The Jackets finished their five-game road trip 3-2.  Which leaves Columbus "not quite in the playoffs" but also "not quite out of the playoffs" yet.  More watching and hoping left in the season.

Game wrap-up: Blue Jackets 3, Canadiens 0

THREE STARS

• Pascal Leclaire, G, Blue Jackets: Made 31 saves for his ninth shutout of the season

• Rick Nash, LW, Blue Jackets: His 33rd goal got it started.

• Manny Malhotra, C, Blue Jackets: One goal, one assist, lots of good penalty-killing

GAME SUMMARY

Columbus 2 0 1 -- 3

Montreal  0 0 0 -- 0

Blue Jackets name Nash captain

The Blue Jackets today named Rick Nash their fifth captain in franchise history. Nash, 23, was introduced at a noon news conference and modeled a Blue Jackets' jersey with the "C" sewn on it.  The team also announced it will elevate Michael Peca to the role of alternate captain. Fans will get their first opportunity to see Nash as captain on Friday night at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Jackets trade for ex-OSU center, draft Russian winger

Friday, June 20, 2008 - 8:26 PM

From staff reports

The Blue Jackets acquired former Ohio State center R.J. Umberger from the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade at the NHL draft in Ottawa.  The trade came right before the Jackets used their sixth overall selection on Nikita Filtaov, a left winger from Moscow.

The Jackets gave the Flyers their other first-round selection, 19th overall, and their third-round selection, 67th overall.  The Jackets had acquired the 19th pick when they traded defenseman Adam Foote to Colorado in February.  The Jackets received Umberger and the Flyers' fourth-round pick, 118th overall.

The Blue Jackets open the NHL season at Dallas tonight.  Here's hoping for a better season then last year.  Below are a couple of opinion columns on the upcoming season from the Dispatch...

Michael Arace commentary: Overlooked Jackets will make playoffs at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2008/10/09/arace09.ART_ART_10-09-08_C1_IHBI8N3.html?sid=101

Good start to the season for the Blue Jackets.  Columbus takes the lead, loses it in the second period and gets it back in the third.  Then loses it again in the third to two quick goals from Dallas.  Only to have Nash score the game winning goal with time running out in overtime.

An encouraging beginning.  Dallas was a playoff team last year.  And this was the type of game the Jackets would lose last year.  Its also the first time the Jackets won a season opening road game.

LET'S GOOOOOOOO JACKETS!

Congrats, but from what I just read above about them giving up the lead so many times, it sounds like the same old jackets to me.  I bet they even scored lest than 2 minutes after the Jackets scored.  Here's hoping I am wrong.

Jackets: Bad start spells doom at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2008/10/12/jackets_gamer_12.ART_ART_10-12-08_C10_D1BJ5LT.html?sid=101

The Blue Jackets fall 3-1 to the Phoenix Coyotes last night.  The Coyotes were playing their season opener and the Jackets were playing the last of back-to-back road games.  It's always tough to win those games.  Columbus has one more road game at Anaheim on Tuesday before coming home to Nationwide Arena on Friday.

The Jackets were also without C Michael Peca.  Peca got ejected in the second period of the Dallas game and didn't play in this game.  Peca got illegally tripped up during a power play, which led to Dallas scoring.  When Peca tried to protest he made contact with the ref.  Peca now might face a ten game suspension!  Let's hope the NHL shows Peca some leniency.

Wild and entertaining game last night at Nationwide Arena.  Columbus knocks off a division rival that they haven't been able to beat 15 of the last 16 times they played.  The Jackets run up a 4-0 lead and hold on for the 5-3 victory.  Nash and Huselius combine for two early goals.  This year's 1st round draft pick Nikita Filatov scores his first NHL goal.  The only down side was goalie Pascal Leclaire getting injured in the third period.  Hopefully its not too serious.

  • 2 weeks later...

Its been a tough series of games for the Jackets.  Bad luck, stretches of good play followed by stretches of bad play and injuries to key players, like goalie Pascal Leclaire.  Its been pretty rough so far...

Jackets puzzled by goal that was nixed

Monday, October 27, 2008

By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

On Saturday, the Blue Jackets appeared to have tied the Minnesota Wild with only 11.5 seconds remaining when Rick Nash redirected Christian Backman's wrist shot into the net.  It was 2-2 and overtime loomed. Or did it?

NHL referee Steve Kozari signaled that the goal was good, then conferred with three other officials -- referee Dan Marouelli and linesmen Mark Wheler and Vaughan Rody -- before the play was sent to be reviewed by video officials in Toronto.  At issue was whether Nash's stick was above the height of the crossbar, thus making the goal illegal.

Ducks 3 | Blue Jackets 2

Opportunity wasted: Jackets in control for 48 minutes, but then unravel in frustrating defeat

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 3:09 AM

By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets believe they had a game stolen from them Saturday night in St. Paul.  Last night, in front of the smallest NHL crowd -- 10,494 -- in the history of Nationwide Arena, they simply gave one away.

The Blue Jackets were in control for the first 48 minutes, leading 2-1.  But then the ice tilted, the Blue Jackets panicked, the puck rarely left the Blue Jackets' zone, and -- wouldn't you know it -- the Anaheim Ducks came back for a 3-2 victory.

Pascal Leclaire is doing awesome for my fantasy team right now

Jackets notebook: Goalie prospect earns call-up

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - 3:17 AM

By Aaron Portzline, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After making only three professional starts, goaltender Steve Mason -- considered one of the top prospects in hockey -- was recalled yesterday by the Blue Jackets from minor-league Syracuse.  Mason will not start tonight when the Blue Jackets play host to the Edmonton Oilers in Nationwide Arena, coach Ken Hitchcock said.  That task will fall to Fredrik Norrena, making his fifth straight start in place of injured Pascal Leclaire.

Rookie "Brass"

Blue Jackets rookie center Derick Brassard was named NHL rookie of the month for October after putting up four goals, five assists and a plus-3 rating in 10 games.  Blue Jackets right winger Jake Voracek was one of the six other finalists for the October award.

Read more at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2008/11/05/jackets_notes05.ART_ART_11-05-08_C5_DRBQ1SF.html?sid=101

WTF?!?! It says Fredrik Norrena will start tonight so i leave him in on my fantasy team but they start Mason anyway! Right now my goalies are Norrena, Pascal Leclaire, and Marty Turco, damn do i need help!!

I was at the game this evening and man, did they pull that win out of their @ss. The second period was absolutely dismal, and the start of the 3rd was downright horrid. Though I'll give them credit that after the goal by Umberger in the 3rd they kept the fire going to rally to a win against Edmonton. When they're on the Jackets are a great team to watch. Hopefully that continues.

^Definitely a wild win last night.

^^You weren't the only one surprised by Mason's start.  According to today's Blue Jacket notebook at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2008/11/06/jackets_notes06.ART_ART_11-06-08_C4_84BQFB0.html?sid=101:

"Mason wasn't told he would start until mid-afternoon. Coach Ken Hitchcock informed him Fredrik Norrena had tweaked a groin muscle.  The franchise tried arranging a flight for Mason's parents, who live in Oakville, Ontario, but ran out of time."

And here's some food for thought about Norrena in that same article...

"Norrena said he felt fine after the game.  When asked about the groin injury that Hitchcock reported, Norrena replied, "No comment."

Shootout victory for the Blue Jackets last night over Les Canadiens de Montréal.  Although the Jackets gave up a late tying goal, they salvaged a second point with the shootout win.  Mason starts at goal again and plays well.

This is the Jackets second win in their current four-game home stand.  CBJ plays Calgary tonight.

Blue Jackets win 3-1 over Calgary.  Some people think Free Masons rule the world.  I don't know about that, but Steve Mason rules the net.  The Jackets and Masons third straight win at home this week.  Sixth straight game with the Jackets getting a point in the standings.  One more home game on Wednesday vs. Phoenix.
