June 11, 20214 yr It looks like Crew fans will have a convenient option for traveling down to Austin next season to tell Anthony Precourt how they really feel about him. Starting November 23, Southwest will be flying a CMH-AUS route. I'm not certain what the frequency will be, but hopefully it's more than one of their weird 1x weekly flights. It's been a few years since we had direct access to AUS, so it's great to see it coming back. Also in November, Southwest will begin flying a CMH-MIA. They are currently flying this route, but I believe it's just a 1x weekly seasonal route. I'm guessing starting in November it will be "permanent route" with an increased frequency. https://thepointsguy.com/news/southwest-major-expansion-syr-bli-fall-2021/
July 2, 20213 yr Air Canada is bringing back their Columbus-Toronto flight today. For right now, it will just operate once daily. When you look at which flights to the US Air Canada is now flying, it's kind of surprising that Columbus is on the list. Aside from Columbus, the only other airports they are flying to in the US are large, mostly hub airports.

That flight was the first leg of our trip to Tokyo-Haneida a few years back, flying with them overall was a great experience. We'd definitely fly with them again going international, price was good too. Quite the study in full range of modern commercial aviation though. CMH-YYZ was on some tiny CRJ that had seen better days. We had to walk outside and climb the stairs to get on. I had to duck down getting in and was rather uncomfortable the whole time, but it was only for an hour. YYZ-HND was probably the nicest 777 in their fleet, super comfortable (especially when we upgraded to Premium Economy on the way home), but wow was that ever a long flight (13+ hours?). Probably a reason most people don't fly east from here on the way to Japan.
September 2, 20213 yr More on that... New $134M rental car facility opens at CMH A new $134 million rental car facility has opened at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, a development the airport authority says is “another step toward opening a new terminal.” The 900,000-square-foot facility, built on 21.5 acres of airport property, allows for the relocation of rental car operations from terminal garages. That frees up 1,700 parking spaces for other customers, according to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. November 2, 20213 yr SLC-CMH had just started operating when Covid hit. So given that it was a mostly leisure-travel flight, it would be no surprise that load factors wouldn't be amazing when the flight was rolled out during off-peak vacation time.

December 15, 20213 yr 4 minutes ago, TH3BUDDHA said: What exactly does this mean? An RFQ is a Request for Quotation. By publicly issuing this RFQ, the airport authority is telling construction companies that they intend to build a new terminal (and other stuff) and they want to get quotes on what each company can perform the project for. This means the process of building a new terminal is in motion. An RFQ is slightly different than an RFP (Request for Proposal) in that when you issue an RFQ you know what you want, but you want to see who can give you the best price. With an RFP, you know generally what you want, but you don't yet know the specifics. The City of Columbus issued an RFP for the North Market lot because they knew generally what they wanted, but they wanted someone to come up with a specific design and price. It seems the airport knows what they want, they just need to figure out who can do it for the best price.
December 15, 20213 yr The RFQ (Request for Qualifications) asks for design professionals to assemble a team and present their qualifications to design a new terminal. Teams will be shortlisted and interviewed. This will take time. We will probably have a new terminal by the end of the decade. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Request_for_qualifications The request for quotation is used to hire a contractor to perform work that's already designed. The RFQ is a big deal because the project is real. The airport authority feels passenger levels now will justify the new terminal.

The elimination of SLC seems to be part of a broader trend by DL. Hopefully the route comes back after the airport expansion there is complete. I imagine CMH-SFO hinged quite a bit on connecting traffic to Asia, which has nearly evaporated. Without that traffic, the route just isn't sustainable at this time.

With all the retail companies HQd in Columbus, you had a ton of Asia travel for buyers to meet with suppliers. That’s pretty much been put on hold, though I know people are eager to get back over there.

Unless we are going to be a major hub, there’s no reason to try to match the overall size. The current CMH terminal could manage a lot more traffic based on number of gates, but it’s the rest of the infrastructure that’s the issue. With this number of gates we could easily double or triple pax numbers.

February 25, 20223 yr Here's why John Glenn Columbus International Airport officials say the existing terminal has to go Columbus' top airport official says "the only real answer" to ensuring the future success of John Glenn Columbus International Airport is to build a new terminal and raze the old one. Joe Nardone, CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, said spending millions to upgrade the 34-gate terminal built in 1958 is unrealistic. "We're not in a position to offer the kind of customer experience that people in this city, in Central Ohio, deserve" with the current terminal, he said. That's despite the fact that the new terminal, which is expected to cost north of $1 billion, might only add one to six additional gates, according to plans released earlier this year. "We of course looked at (renovation)," Nardone told us. "It's not cost effective to continue putting money into a facility for years that is still going to have old bones.
