February 8, 20241 yr I've had discussions with others too about how we still won't get international flights because we aren't big enough even with the new terminal but 1. Our runway is technically long enough to land an A380. Never ever going to happen or be needed but for the sake of the runway not being big enough, thats not accurate. Could also be expanded with reroute/burial of Stelzer and/or Hamilton if absolutely desired, but not required. 2. New terminal will include 2 gates for customs. 3. Narrow bodies are becoming a big part of transatlantic travel with all major airlines even going as far as working to configure flagship business class on narrow bodies. So an airport with all narrow body gates isn't going hold back international access. The city, state, airport leadership and business community is what's going to be our biggest help or hindrance for international flights. Edited February 8, 20241 yr by DTCL11

I guess save this comment for 2030 when people start complaining we don't have enough gates lol That project, which was only 5% of the cost of the brand new terminal, was started over a decade ago and allowed the current terminal to continue limping along for another 15 years until the new terminal is completed. The new terminal will have a passenger capacity of 13m. Our current annual traffic is a bit below 8.5m, so we will need to grow our traffic by 5m to reach capacity. For some context, in the past 30 years, our total annual traffic has only increased by 3m. I think it's safe to say we have plenty of time before need to worry about expanding. Even if an expansion is need 25 years down the line, it should be easy enough to simply extend one of the wings of the terminal.

Who suggested we need 60+ gates? That's completely insane for a non hub airport. SLC, which is a Delta hub, has about 60 gates and they carry about 30m total passengers. The number of gates is not nearly as important as the ability for the infrastructure of the airport to handle passenger capacity. If you design the infrastructure appropriately, a 30-40 gate airport can handle far more passengers than a 50-60 gate airport.

February 9, 20241 yr I was reading the "Features" page on the new terminal website and I noticed one of the features listed is a "Central marketplace with stunning views of the airfield and skyline." I hadn't thought about having a view of the skyline from most of the terminal, but that will definitely be a pretty cool feature. Also, just being able to see more of the airfield will be nice. The current terminals feel very enclosed and don't feature very good views of the outside world. https://cmhnext.com/new-terminal#features

February 9, 20241 yr A couple things I noticed The renderings include a very outdated security system. Hopefully it's just a rending issue and we get the upgraded checkpoints with automatic bin return etc. A cameo appearance by British Airways I question the stunning view of the airfield and skyline from the marketplace. There are gates in the way. I'd love a stunning view but I have a feeling it's going to be more occluded by passengers than they make it out to be. If we could get a dreamy space saucer lounge on top, that would be fun.

It's a similar story out in Arizona. Terminal 3 in PHX underwent a massive renovation just a couple years ago and they still have the old scanners, metal tables, and standard rollers. It kind of feels like a highway project which was designed before LED lighting came into common use. The contracts were already signed, equipment already procured, and only then does new technology become readily available. Contrast that with something like CVG (or DEN even), where implementing a new security system is its own renovation not tied to a terminal rebuild.
