November 18, 2024Nov 18 Also, the airport people absolutely suck. Several people criticized their all-white design and they basically said kick rocks and that its the "Columbus identity." Last time I checked we didn't live in a white, sterile, basic city. I feel like they're trying to value engineer yet another building in this city.

For example, they should continue the skylights throughout the gates, instead of a flat ceiling. Most other airports do that. The color scheme throughout is largely white - the cheapest color to build with (for whatever reason). There’s no APM planned to access the current parking garage and surface lots. It’s better, but its nothing to run home about.

December 4, 2024Dec 4 Blue Lot to Close at CMH to Make Way for New Terminal Groundbreaking for the new $2 billion terminal at John Glenn Columbus International Airport is scheduled to take place in early 2025, and that means shifting around some parking to make room. The Blue Shuttle Lot will close to new parkers on December 9. On the same day, a new expansion of the Red Lot will open that will be able to accommodate an additional 2,550 cars. The new terminal will be built across the street from the rental car center, on land occupied by both the Blue Lot and the cell phone waiting lot. A new temporary cell phone lot is scheduled to open in early 2025. December 9, 2024Dec 9 $2 billion CMH terminal project moves forward with groundbreaking The Columbus Regional Airport Authority will pay an additional $254.72 million to construction company Hensel Phelps for the next phase of the $2 billion new terminal project, pending board approval Tuesday. That follow's Monday's groundbreaking ceremony, which was moved up from a projected 2025 timeline. The total board authorization to Hensel Phelps for pre-construction services in June 2023 to date is nearly $1.16 billion. December 10, 2024Dec 10 In 2021-2022, I traveled to 32 domestic airports. Whether the airport is brand new, or 50 years old, the clean, bright, white/gray, simple airports withstand the test of time over and over again. This is true whether it was 4 gates or 100. It's perfectly fine to have a good looking airport for a mid size city, that is not and will never be a hub. Whose passenger traffic puts us at the lower end of the top 50 airports. People pass through this airport and don't spend time in it unless you're an anxious traveler getting there hours before the flight. I know we want to ooh and ahh at Portland but we also have to have a reality check that Portland and Columbus are not similar. PDX doubles Columbus passenger traffic for a similar metro area, is a secondary hub for Alaska, nearly doubles the number of daily flights, etc. They have alot more funding to play with from tickets, gate fees, airline contributions, etc. CMH is a new city with a similar identity. The airport is not going to define it or be able to force one that is any different. Edit: FTR. This isn't me saying we are settling or that 'this is Columbus so its ok for what it is'. I think it's a stunning airport as it has been presented and is just right. Sure, my one criticism might be I prefer taller ceilings in the gate wings but there is nothing inherently wrong with what is being built. Edited December 10, 2024Dec 10 by DTCL11
December 10, 2024Dec 10 2 hours ago, ColDayMan said: Or just copy Portland's new terminal. Either or. Yeah that's been my point all along. I very rarely fly, but when there and was mind blown. PDX renovation was the same cost as CMH with a bigger airport, and a weird, phased construction plan around the existing operating terminal. Columbus can easily design things similar to PDX. Color does not age if done well and right - take their famous carpet for example.

The flat ceiling is depressing and makes it seem pancaked. PDX had really nice tall ceilings similar to Ft Lauderdale (I believe that's the one - it's been well over 10 years) and its always nice landing and having the sunlight streaming in and not feeling once again stuffed vertically like in the airplane. That simple change would make a world of difference.

The current terminal is 4600 International Gateway, it's not getting demoed for 4 or more years, it's taller than 1 story, and it's more than 95,000 square feet. My guess is this permit was to demo the covered parking structures in the Blue lot, which looked to be around that square footage.

January 11Jan 11 Cell phone lot and traffic changes coming to John Glenn Columbus airport Monday "Air travelers headed to John Glenn Columbus International Airport will notice some significant changes starting Monday as construction on the airport's new terminal progresses. Traffic heading east on International Gateway will be reduced to two lanes just past the red lot before widening at the terminal. The airport's cell phone lot also will change locations starting Monday, according to a press release from the Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA). The speed limit east of Stelzer Road will be lowered to 25 miles per hour to accommodate the work zone. These changes come just over a month after the airport closed its blue parking lot to make way for terminal construction. The airport added 2,550 new parking spots to the red lot to make up for those lost with the blue lot's closure. John Glenn Columbus' new terminal will cost nearly $2 billion to build and will feature 36 gates that can accommodate up to 13 million passengers. Airport officials hope to finish the terminal by 2029." https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2025/01/10/parking-and-traffic-changes-coming-to-john-glenn-columbus-airport-monday/77595410007/

January 27Jan 27 Total passenger numbers are in for 2024. CMH saw a total of 8,965,614 (up 7% to LY) passengers in 2024, and LCK saw a total of 284,777 (down 4% to LY) for a combined total of 9,250,391 (up 6.7% to LY). We should reach close to 10m total passengers between CMH and LCK in 2025. January numbers aren't out yet, but I'm guessing the OSU playoff run will have helped 2025 get off to a hot start. Additionally, with more companies going back to the office, I'm hoping we'll see an uptick in business travel in the upcoming year. https://flycolumbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dec-2024-Monthly-Stats-Report.pdf
February 5Feb 5 Airport sells $1.2B in bonds for new terminal "The Columbus Regional Airport Authority has sold $1.2billion in bonds to help pay for a new terminal at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the authority announced Monday. The $1.2billion in general airport revenue bonds were sold to investors after the airport’s initial $1billion bond offering was met with 'overwhelming demand,' according to a CRAA press release. The airport authority received orders over four times the initial $1billion amount, so the authority increased the bond offering to $1.2billion. The CRAA broke ground on the airport’s new terminal in December and plan to open it by 2029, The Dispatch previously reported. The new terminal will have 36 gates, including one that can accommodate large international flights, and will be able to handle 13 million passengers per year." https://www.dispatch.com/

I'm curious if we'll see Southwest expand their service a bit more once the new terminal opens. My guess is they are pretty constrained right now in Concourse A, which is the smallest of the three concourses. Hopefully they can get access to a few extra gates in the new concourse and continue to grow their presence here.
February 6Feb 6 Indeed, this is very welcome news! Really love the trajectory Southwest has in CMH with their slow and measured, but successful introduction of new cities. HOU and DAL followed similar 1x weekly --> daily service. Not sure if the new terminal will necessarily bring increased WN service. CMH is already pretty well-served all around; the only gaps left are to medium-large sized cities like RDU and MKE, and of course, international. Remains to be seen whether WN might go for routes like that once there's more real estate to run these flights from CMH.

The new terminal in New Orleans only has 35 gates and they currently handle about 13m passengers per year with extra capacity to spare. DAL only has 20 gates but handles around 17m passengers in a year. The number of gates really doesn’t have a huge impact in capacity. It’s the infrastructure behind the gates that matter. You could have 50 gates that are only designed to handle regional jets and you won’t be able to handle as many passengers as 20 gates designed to handle mainline aircraft.

You have to remember that the name of the game in the airline industry is “up gauging “ AA, Delta, United have all ordered combinations of A321NEO, Max8/9/10, 76 seat RJs. They would rather optimize their space than incur additional cost per operation. however CMH is slightly unique in the fact that we are a MX station for Republic and Envoy. We have an over abundance of service with RJ’s to the main hub stations to get those aircraft into the system. If you go on flightradar24 and track a Republic plane youll see what im talking about. leave CMH-PHL-BTV-PHL-LGA-CMH style routings, or it could play out over 3 days to return for MX. the rotation is constantly happening. If we didn’t have the MX hub youd see more mainline to ORD/LGA/PHL/JFK etc. as long as there is plenty of ramp space they can optimize by towing planes off gates. Pretty common at larger airports. 36 gates will be plenty, AA can utilize our gates better because the regional bridge on the B gates is only suitable for CRJ/ERJ aircraft right now. Remember those 36 gates will be capable of handling larger aircraft and not limited.
February 12Feb 12 Kind of hard to see through the fence but the new terminal site is a full fledged construction site these days!
