I'm in there on occasion.  Not sure about how they interface with the neighborhood...

except to say that they have very prominent signage welcoming people of all races, creeds, etc ...

So for that I give them a thumbs up

^Actually I find it kind of sad that a commercial establishment feels it necessary to put up such a sign.

Maybe it is sad that it's necessary.

But if it is necessary then I'm happy for an establishment to set the tone.

Terrestrial has been pretty welcoming to dogs. That’s a good thing.

Battery Park Pub to Open in Former Graffiti, Reddstone, Snickers… Space

https://m.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2018/07/02/battery-park-pub-to-open-in-former-graffiti-reddstone-snickers-space

Graffiti Social Kitchen closed its doors in the Battery Park neighborhood this past October. On Wednesday August 1, Battery Park Pub (1261 W. 76th St.) will take its place. Prior to Graffiti, the iconic Detroit Shoreway property was home to Reddstone, a casual pub that was a frequent destination for the new owner.

“Reddstone used to be one of my favorite places, and now I get to host it, which is quite an honor,” says Garrett Moeller.

Moeller and his business partner Seung “Jay” Choi have decades of industry experience between the two of them, and their goal for the bar is a return to simpler times.

“Our concept is to bring an affordable approach to the neighborhood,” Moeller explains. “The feedback we’re getting from the neighborhood is that the previous restaurant was great but a little too pricey for them to go to on a regular basis. They want more of a pub atmosphere, so we’re going back to basics.”

Gluten-free steampunk.  Ugh.  I'll give it 15 months ... unless there are some really deep-pocketed investors .. in which case I give it 2 years.

Let's how it turns out before you trash it.  Gluten free is pretty easy to do and doesn't mean less delicious food.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wasn't meaning to trash it.

But you'd think that given the fact that multiple concepts have failed ... and failed fast ... down there, new restaurateurs might be looking to broaden the appeal of their spaces, not get even more niche.

I totally get what you're saying, but sometimes going super niche is exactly what a location needs. Who knows, maybe it'll become a destination BECAUSE it's so niche.

Wonder if the immediate neighborhood would ever be dense enough to support a coffee shop / cafe there instead of cycling through bars.

The coffee shop is at 65th and detroit.  Gypsy bean.   there is also a juice bar and a doughnut shop on the same block.

Ohio City has Phoenix, Rising Star, Koffee, and Duck Rabbit, plus you could count stands at the WSM, Townhall and Cleveland Bagel.

Love Gypsy Beans, but if the area could support it, it would be nice to have a coffee place closer than a 10+ minute walk.

There's something to be said for a great cup of close-by drip coffee, the above shops have that (minus Koffee and Gypsy Beans), but I'd think the neighborhood could support a Pour or something with high quality coffee.

Gypsy Beans has awful tasting coffee, but it is a nice gathering spot for the community. At least I can get tea there.

But we probably want another shop. Gypsy is a far walk from Battery Park.

Lol the basic coffee is certainly not great, but the red-eye is pretty good IMO.  I also love the bagels and recently discovered the Club Sandwich is excellent.  I also appreciate that it's one of the longer-tenured businesses in the neighborhood, and one of the few that caters to the full cross-section of the neighborhood. That said, I think the BP Pub space could work well for coffee/breakfast because of that great patio...

I think good company would be the best bet.... Some of those other spaces are quite large.

Put an exspresso machine and a barista in there in the morning...

Cavaliers unveil plans for 'first-of-its kind’ esports center in Cleveland’s Battery Park

Updated Jul 18, 11:21 AM; Posted Jul 18, 11:00 AM

By Joey Morona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cavs Legion Gaming Club, the NBA 2K Leagueesports team owned and operated by the Cavaliers, unveiled plans Thursday for a state-of-the-art esports facility in Cleveland’s Battery Park neighborhood.

The 2,700-sq. ft. space will open in the fall and serve as the practice facility for Cavs Legion GC during the season, which runs from April to July. During the rest of the year, the center will be used for organized gaming competitions, tournaments, watch parties, and events such as corporate outings, birthday parties and educational programs.

The organization says the location, in the Battery Park Powerhouse on the opposite side of Terrestrial Brewing Company, was chosen because of its proximity to its headquarters at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the player’s living quarters in the neighborhood and the recreational and entertainment opportunities at nearby Edgewater Beach.

This is a fantastic use of the space and I like the educational component of it as well.

Yeah, this is great. Westlake already has a solid esports facility (1Life2Play) so I'm happy there is a new venue in a more central location.

Battery Park when it produced Everready batteries. You’ll notice the surviving powerhouse.

Makes one realize that anything is possible for that area -- including developing some mid- to high-rises north of Lake Avenue but south of the tracks in the West 80s.

That's a really incredible photo. I had no idea that plant was that big. I'd definitely take what we have now over it. There are better ways to make batteries now than poisoning our people and city. I do wish that brick road was still going through the new Battery Park though. The brick streets and courts in Ohio City are one of my favorite aspects of that neighborhood.

I remember the back and forth with the city and Marous Bros over Marous demanding the city take liability over any potential future problems related to the Brownfield the development would be built on. The city took responsibility, and the project moved forward. I was a Marous employee back then. Not an ethically sound company, but they treated me well.

Oh, and Vintage Development was born out of that to skirt paying union wages, as Marous Bros is a union signatory contractor, and Scott Marous Sr. is on virtually every union building trades board, yet Vintage is an under the table, cash paying, Amish operation. But that’s for a whole nother thread.

I was walking by the site a few days ago.

The "foreman" is an Amish kid .... He looks like he can't be more than 14 years old.  (maybe just baby-faced I suppose ... but I did a double take)

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed it, but I just noticed that there was some motion around Battery Park in August. Parcels in the area set aside for future develop were reorganized.

These properties are highlighted above. The green parcel was then given to the City of Cleveland this month. Part of this green parcel will be a road going through the development. The box shaped portion of the green parcel is J & M International which I guess is going to remain?

A link between 70th and 73rd is sorely needed to mesh the neighborhood back together.

It looks like that section will take Battery Park Blvd to Herman Ave.'s alignment, but Herman ends at W. 69th St.  I assume that means they are planning to knock it through that block, as well, then.

Nice observation. That’d  be great to see. It’d involve taking this property down......

Maybe, if they want to squeeze the Herman Ave row I think they could do it be only tearing down the house to the south of that one.  If they want a full width row like the rest of Herman, then they would need to tear down the house in your picture and the house and mixed use building to the south of it.

Most (maybe all?) of that "future development" section is currently cleared land. They've been doing work on it for a while now.

A link between 70th and 73rd has been discussed for quite a while but no concrete plans yet that I know of.

I'll try to figure out what's going on with Herman. But I highly doubt they would extend it to 69th, because knocking down those houses would be a non-starter, and nobody wants more traffic on Herman between 65th-69th.

Slightly off-topic, but 69th from Detroit to Herman is currently being re-done. Same thing they did with 69th from Herman to Fr. Caruso last year.

I personally think they should also punch Father Frascati through to connect to W. 70th and add some stop signs at the new 4-way intersection they'd be creating at W. 73rd. Too many people seem to treat W. 73rd as a freeway ramp off the Shoreway, and I think a stop sign at W. 73d & Father Frascati would help mitigate some of that.

Agree 100% that 73rd needs a 4 way stop at that location.

I agree with the first part of your sentence but as a graphic designer, the last part ... is that Swahili?? ?

Hopefully they can make a go of it, I know the restaurant business is tough but that location just seems like it should be a slam dunk.
