Mall eyes even more expansion

Lisa Biank Fasig

Courier Staff Reporter

It won't be completed until the 2005 holiday shopping season, but Kenwood Towne Centre is seeking another expansion that would result in a much larger Lazarus-Macy's, two more restaurants and added parking.

This "Streetscape" appears to be nothing more than an addition to the side of the mall.  Oh, yeah...and they have valet parking even though there are free spaces only 20 feet away.

Time to retire this thread to "completed projects".

Macy's fashion center counts on comeback

Kenwood store loads up its men's department

By John Eckberg

Enquirer staff writer

Workplaces these days are awash with casual clothing and apparel - golf shirts on men and capri pants on women, clogs in summer and hiking boots in winter.

So why is Federated Department Stores Inc. bringing a building worth an estimated $10.2 million to loyal shoppers at its Macy's regional flagship at Kenwood Towne Centre?

Though fashion may be on the wane at many offices and workplaces, Federated is banking on a big future for luxury goods for men.

550 new spots in Kenwood

BY JEFF MCKINNEY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP - Shoppers at Kenwood Towne Centre will soon get 550 new parking spaces in a covered garage.

Loveland-based Creekwood Construction Co. Inc. is building a three-level, 200,000-square-foot parking garage at the corner of Kenwood and Galbraith roads at the Sycamore Township mall, one of the region's largest. Work has begun and is expected to be done by September.

Kenwood Parisian to close

The Parisian department store at Kenwood Towne Centre, which was recently acquired by Belk Stores and then put on the market again, is scheduled to close in February.

Store management notified employees Oct. 25, soon after Belk said that it planned to sell the Kenwood location and 10 others. Four of those stores are going to The Bon-Ton Stores, of Pennsylvania, but a buyer has not yet been identified for the Kenwood location. It is the only Parisian store in the Cincinnati market; the nearest is in Beavercreek, near Dayton.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Would this open the door for Crate and Barrel?

I wonder why they chose to close the Cincinnati store, seems like it would do well with all the corporate bigwigs in and around Cincy. Was it underperforming? This gives federated a nice opportunity to put a Bloomingdale's in Cincinnati.

I worked in Kenwood Mall 2 1/2 years ago...Parisians didn't get much business. That store is boring.

I hate kenwood towne center.  1, kenwood is not a town, it actually is legally nothing.  There is no kenwood, it is a neighborhood in sycamore township that doesn't really function as a neighborhood.  It has no civic institutions, just a bunch of sprawl.  2. people who spell towne with the extra e on the end, what's up with that?  Even the Bortzi (I don't know what the plural of bortz is) use the extra e.  3.  if just one mall was disagregated and placed in an urban setting, people would say we had one of the most vibrant downtowns in the region, but at present people go to a farce of an urban area turned inward and lacking in all of the benefits of a downtown for the sake of more parking.  4. kenwood towne center is ugly, even with the new improvements.  Look, you put a 1000+ car surface lot in front of anything and it is ugly.  Mona Lisa- nice.  Mona Lisa behind a 1000 car parking lot, ugly.

I am sure a Saks, or Nordstrom will move in to take its place.

Belk would not fit well in Kenwood, the name sounds too cheap for an upscale mall (especially since everyone outside of the South probably does not really know anything of it)

I was surprised Bon-Ton was buying the Parisian at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek when it already operates an Elder-Beerman store there.  I doubt that Bon-Ton will keep the Parisian name.  Belk is converting all their Parisian stores to Belk.  Bon-Ton is only buying five stores.  Why would they try to operate a more upscale chain with only five stores.  My guess is that the Fairfield Commons store will become an Elder-Beerman furniture gallery.

As far as the store at Kenwood goes, I was surprised Bon-Ton didn't purchase it and open an Elder-Beerman there similar to the one at the Dayton Mall.

My guess is that Neiman, Nordstrom or Von Maur will move into the Kenwood Store.

When the Elder Beerman closed at Forest Fair, the company made two statements regarding leaving. 1) They were leaving the Cincinnati market and 2) they wanted to create smaller, one story stores (like Kohl's, Towne Mall store) and that location didn't fit their new model. This is why I figure they didn't go for Kenwood, but I have no idea about FF Commons, it doesn't make since, unless they are going to open up a Bon-Ton.

Remember those statements were made BEFORE Bon-Ton purchased Elder-Beerman.

I'm curious what will become of the Parisian stores in Michigan.  My guess they will carry one of the Bon-Ton nameplates in Michigan...Younkers or E-B.

Eventually, BT will have to move to a single nameplate as Federated did.

Okay, I wasn't sure when Bon-Ton came in, I was thinking they were already around when FF closed.

I remember reading, when Bon-Ton bought EB, that they don't like to operate downtown stores, yet Hamilton is still open. It defies all odds, and who knows how much longer it will last.

And they also purchased the downtown Indy Parisian store from Belk, which doesn't make any sense either.

Speaking of downtown stores, I don't think the Kenwood store will sit empty long though.  But could it mean that Saks will close they downtown Cincy store and move to Kenwood?

Saks downtown received money from the city to remodel their store a few years ago.  Because of this, they are required to stay for so many years.  I can't remember how long.  At some point they can leave, but they have to pay back some of the money to the city.

Would this open the door for Crate and Barrel?

If I remember right, a Crate and Barrel is rumored for the development next door (where Safeco Insurance used to be).  Could be wrong, though.

Anyone know what's going up across the street on Kenwood Road, where Frank's and Sterling Cut Glass used to be?

Maybe Kenwood could get a Von Maur.  This regional upscale midwestern chain has been creeping gradually this direction.  It would be a great fit for Kenwood.

^That's actually whats most likely to happen as they have said recently that they want to be in Cincinnati and Cleveland.

I'm sick to my stomach.  I loved the Parisian in Kenwood.  I hate it when management ruins a good store.  I don't think a Nordstrom's will come to Kenwood as that Macy's is Federated's flaghsip Cincinnati property.  Also, I don't think the footprint is right for a Nordstrom's but a good designer could make it work.  If it were to happen Kenwood and Blue Ash would effectively be the toniest areas in the city within 5 years.

I SMELL A NORDSTROMS and maybe some expansion of the streets of kenwood.

The heck with Nordstroms, the shafted the Cincy region once...they can kiss it!  Street of Kenwood?!?!?  Is this the area with the cheesecake factory area and whatnot, I have just never heard of that term/name before.

I personally am not upset about Parisians leaving.  For many reasons I find the mere ambiance of the store (poor lighting, crowded racks, etc) to be a reason not to shop there.  In fact the best thing about Parisians in my opinion is it is right next to the Panera Bread!  I would love to see a Bloomingdale's go in that location.

My guess is that Parisian will be replaced with Von Maur...the same "upscale" store that Dayton's The Greene will be getting...it's just a guess :-)

While Von Maur is fine, I think Cincy could use a higher end retail (along with Saks), like Norstroms or Bloomingdales (although I don't see Bloomingdales coming to Cincy). I would agree, if Kenwood could land Norstroms and Crate and Barrel that would easily make it the 'toniest shopping area' in the Tri-state.

UncleRando,

Can you give me a breakdown of what happened with the Norstorm project that didn't go through?

^You can go here

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/search/?t=cincinnati&op=query&q=Nordstrom+downtown&am=cincinnati&am=&s=&r=50

and there are lots of links to articles about Nordstrom and Cincinnati.

Basically Nordstrom had plans for two stores one downtown and one in Deerfield Twp. The one downtown included a $50 million dollar subsidy from the city. Eventually Nordstrom inc. started to hurt financially and pulled out of the downtown site, then the Deerfield site. But said they want to be in Cincinnati. This was 6-7 years ago.

Street of Kenwood?!?!?  Is this the area with the cheesecake factory area and whatnot, I have just never heard of that term/name before.

I don't think that is the name...although it could be. The company that developed the Streets of West Chester Township has developments all over called the Streets of [suburb name].

You are correct,

They just call it the 'streetscape'.

Von Maur is high end and is often mention in the as being in the same ranks as Nordstrom, Saks ect.

It will probably be Gabriel Brothers.

^Isn't there already a Northgate or Eastgate Mall thread somewhere?  Maybe you should post that last comment there.

  • 2 weeks later...

A few options for the old Parisian:  1.) Bulldoze and add more streetscape lifestyle stores; 2.) bulldoze and create mixed-use residential commercial mix; 3.) convert into Nordstrom/Von Maur, whatever.  The store is huge and old.  The parking garage was designed for station wagons not SUV's (low clearance height).  My vote - bulldoze and create a mixed use development on the site that will compliment the mall.   :-o

I'm sort of with you SSS.  That store is old and the way the parking garage is constructed I almost think it will make more sense to demo the store and parking structure and begin from scratch.  If that is a new department store then great but if it was a combination of multiple stores I think that is ok too.  Especially if both options improve the Kenwood-Montgomery corner and acess and visibility.

I have some insider info telling me that the old Parisian space is going to be a Nordstroms.

Report: Nordstrom looks at Kenwood

BY MIKE BOYER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Channel 5 news reported Tuesday that Nordstrom Inc. is interested in the site Parisian is vacating at Kenwood Towne Centre, but the Seattle-based chain would not confirm the report.

"We don't have any plans to announce in the Cincinnati area," said spokeswoman Deniz Anders Tuesday night.

It'll be Von Maur.  Watch.

Well, whoever buys it I hope they tear it down and build a new. The Parisian building looks terrible especially how its crammed onto that corner

It'll be Von Maur.  Watch.

Yeah...thats the retailer that I thought it would be...hence total shocker

^why did you people think it was gonna be a van maur?  did i miss something?

I suspected Nordstrom's would show some interest in this location.  I have never even heard of Van Maur.

awhile back, wasnt there plans to have a Van Maur downtown along with a Nordstroms, etc.

^why did you people think it was gonna be a van maur?  did i miss something?

Because Von Maur is upscale and expanding.  Nordstrom slowed it's expansion for awhile...that may have changed.  Von Maur is building in Dayton so having a store in Cinicnnati soon is not to far out of the question.

^ Where are they building in Dayton?

^ Where are they building in Dayton?

The Greene

They also have a location at Polaris in Columbus and have locations in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, so it looks like they have been focusing on expanding in the midwest, so a Cincinnati store would not surprise me.

^^

It was also rumored they were looking to build at the River's Crossing development in South Lebanon.

We have two Von Maurs here in metro Detroit.  One in Ann Arbor and one in Livonia.  They took over these two old Jacobson's locations.  The stores are nice, a bit pricey, but I have found a few good deals there.  Not as nice as Nordstrom though.
