Hmm now I'm lost.  Do you mean that Moreland Boulevard was Van Aken, or that it ran into Van Aken from somewhere else?

Lawd..........N & S moreland street names have never changed.

Moreland Boulevard is today's Van Aken.  Same street, just a name change.

Also, when did N. Woodland change to Larchmere/Fairmount and S. Woodland to Buckeye?  I assume that way back in the day, N. Woodland ran from Pepper Pike (where parts of it still exist) down Fairmount to Larchmere, then onto what is now just called Woodland.  S. Woodland turns into Buckeye, which in turn meets up with Woodland, so I am guessing it was called Woodland from that point into downtown, and N. and S. Woodland for everything east of there.

the "Park" and "woodland" streets have always puzzled me.  South Park for instance is 3 different streets.  Click this then click street view. [South Park Three way]

  • West Park is West, but runs N-S.  :?
  • South Park runs East and West and at the same time runs North-South.  It runs parallel and also intersects with Shaker Blvd.  :wtf: :wtf:
  • North Park, dead ends by my parents.  But then continues just starts near the intersection of Shelburne.
  • North Woodland turns into west woodland at the intersection of South Park and West Park  :wtf: :? :wtf:    Shelburne is the most ridiculous street in Cleveland Hts. &  Shaker Hts. it stops, starts and weaves in various directions
  • The "loop" street that you find in Shaker are very confusing along with 4 way street crossing on Van Aken.  Example:  Kenmore, Van Aken, Glencairn and Ingleside.  What light to I take???  Which right turn do I make?  Does that driver have the right-of-way or do I?  :?    :wtf:    :wtf:    :?
  • Byron starts at Warrensville & S. Woodland but ends on Green and Shaker?  WTF?

Then there are the reminents of the street that ran onto Shaker Blvd. from Kemper and Cormer.  Have you ever notice how Cormer dead ends into a parking lot next to Moreland Courts.

If you don't live in between South Park and Fairmount, you can easily get lost.

I equate driving in some parts of Shaker Heights with driving in Pittsburgh :)

Ok, I have to ask, why?

I just thought that was rements of the park. IIRC, Ambler park had boats or something way way back in the day. So I think that could be from the water mill and boathouse.

I'm pretty sure I had heard someone say once that there used to be a bridge there, but I'm not sure.  Either way, it sure looks like on the North Park side there is an approach to what used to be a bridge which perfectly lines up with a row of a few footers.

The paths you see on eastern north park, between beaumont school and courtland, lead to the other houses on north park, they have a psuedo private park that connect to each property. People that live in Cleveland Hts. are over the top rich.

Here's the area I'm talking about, specifically the "missing" part of North Park (which is not very far, maybe a few hundred feet) west of Eaton.

Because there's no grid.

Thats the dead end I was talking about earlier.  I have no clue why that's there.  I just know kids from beaumont would smoke weed over there.

One or two of the houses on Shelburne have two entrances, similar to some of the homes on South Park/Shaker Blvd.

OH......ok.  lol

Shouldn't you be out in the ravine finding that bridge for me! :)

Um....I've been in that ravine...trust me you don't want to know what happens there.  Back in the day it was a "lovers lane".

Stay on the city streets and keep your nose clean!

I'm sure most ravines near a city are that way.  Doesn't mean they aren't fun to explore.  If you are more comfortable staying on top, though, the dirt path parallel to North Park just outside the tree line goes right by where this mysterious bridge-type thing is.

I'm talking about in my younger years. I doubt todays, internet you tube "let me show you my private parts kid" goes out like that anymore.

My grand father says it's mostly sugar daddies out around the lake hitting on women jogging.

Interesting thread, guys, but I'm looking for the reason why these various streets/building/cities are named 'Moreland'. Was it an influential person? If so, what was his claim to fame?

The original name for Shaker Square was Moreland Circle.  I wonder if Moreland Blvd, like Chagrin, was named for the towns east of Cleveland that they lead to.  Moreland Hills has a historical society, might be worth a call to them...

Happy Memorial Day everyone! So far, I've spoken to Shaker Hts Historical Society, who indicated that the Van Sweringens were very fond of names culled from England and 'Moreland' might have been assigned rather arbitrarily. I'm still going to check on a few other leads - thanks, buckeye1 for the Moreland Hills tip!
