'Best Hospitals' include Clinic

The Cleveland Clinic is the third-best hospital in the country, and the No. 1 heart center for the 12th straight year, according to a news magazine's annual hospital rankings.

The Clinic made the best showing of any Northeast Ohio hospital, claiming a spot on each of the lists in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" issue, which ranked 176 hospitals in 16 specialties. The Clinic made the top 10 in 11 fields, and, overall, came in just behind Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn...

I think it's pretty safe to say that Cleveland Clinic is again far and away the best hospital in the state.  And it's nice to see that we have some pretty good ones!

Methodology: What it means to be best

By Avery Comarow

Good hospital care probably is around the corner, if all you need is a routine procedure—sometimes even major surgery. But a difficult condition or a complex operation demands a higher standard of care, especially if the risk is compounded by advanced age, frailty, obesity, or some other complication.

That describes the patients U.S. News set out to help, starting in 1990, with "America's Best Hospitals." The mission, unchanged over 17 years, has been to identify centers that take on and excel at tough procedures and conditions—rare cancers, worsening heart failure, seemingly untreatable leg-artery blockages. That is why most of the institutions ranked are referral centers, where the sickest patients are sent for advanced care. Such hospitals follow—and often pioneer—new treatment guidelines. They conduct bench-to-bedside research. And they exploit the latest advances in imaging, surgical devices, and other technologies...

Honor Roll

Out of 5,189 hospitals, only 3 percent, 176 in all, are ranked in one or more of the 16 specialties in this year's "America's Best Hospitals." And of those, just 14 qualified for the Honor Roll by ranking at or near the top in at least six specialties—a demonstration of broad expertise. The order is based on points—2 points for ranking in the topmost tier, 1 point for the second tier
