April 23Apr 23 Someone who is a tremont oldy and goes to all the block club meetings mentioned to me this something the owners of the property specifically wanted. Where his info is from I don't know, but he has generally been someone "in the know". I'll see him tomorrow and prod him again for those details maybe there will be something illuminating.

There are 3 perfectly useable homes that can be saved, more importantly they have 3 different styles and contribute to the diverse architecture of West 14th. I think the original plan was for 12 homes (6 street-facing and 6 behind), unless anything changed? I'm all for historic preservation—there are a saddening number of iconic, architectural gems all over the city in desperate need of saving, but I'm not convinced that these are anywhere close to the top of that list. I agree that it seems silly to tear down the houses when there are so many vacant lots available. At least it seems like it should be a better use of the property.

All of this depends on the number of people that are going to live there. Tearing perfectly good homes down that have 9 bedrooms for an apartment or condo building with 30-50 people is a good trade off, but replacing three homes that total 9 bedrooms for say 12-15 is a tough sell for me, especially when there are other location options.

However, the plans from the city planning commission presentation (linked, slides 44-67) call for nine 5-bedroom homes and three 3-bedroom homes. If we can assume vacant rooms are balanced out by shared rooms, then these townhomes would house 54 people, even more than the 30-50 person apartment building and 600% of the current use.

April 24Apr 24 I wanted to mention I talked to the old man and he was at the block club meeting that talked about the fate of the three houses on w14th. He said it's two owners, one owns two and the other one. During the block club one of the owners has been in the house for 30yrs and mentioned he was ready for a more "modern home". He also said that his kitchen is also too small so sacrificing multiple century homes does make a lot sense. The idea that they'd build somewhere like an empty lot isn't an option since this seems spear headed by the owners and they want to stay in the immediate area. The lack of historical designation on this stretch means there aren't many barriers for anyone hoping it doesn't happen. Ironically there were zero objections at the block club which surprises me because I feel like if anything would be NIMBYd this would be it

May 25May 25 This is the view of the new townhomes on west 14th from my bedroom window living in the CMHA building just next door. This view would ordinarily be good news since i could share regular progress updates, but there is a scary rumor going around Manhattan Tower.I'm hoping yall can maybe confirm the possibility my building has been sold to a private developer or owner? For some reason when it comes to the records lookup I cant seem to get it to function in a consistent and useful manner because of either some secret technique I dont know or just mental deficiency.I'm guessing some information has been mixed up because CMHA in the last year have put in a whole new elevator, brand new hot water system and just finished entirely redoing the lot.I can't see them investing all this into the building to then sell it off. I also can't see someone using the building for a rehab, because quite frankly it's 50yr old public housing stock and it ain't pretty.I'm scared over here. I'm already living on a knifes edge, I can't afford to fund a move and being able to literally walk to work is something like a treasure.Getting into this small cmha building in tremont was as close to winning the lottery as I'll ever get. My freelance career is just now gaining steam and I'm worried the rug is about to be pulled from under me.I probably put in way more than I needed to and I'm sorry for essentially venting. May 26May 26 the responses are reassuring and I was definitely thinking it was a mix up of information but i couldnt help myself and had to ask the only ones whod know since we have no management till Tuesday or Wednesday.Still going to double check after the holidays. As long as we have good news ill be able to share some cool progress pics :)
