the big sewer project at abby and west 11th will apparently stretch through winter, according to the construction workers on the job. I am interested if anyone knows what is happening at abby and west 19th?

As am I - I drive by there every day on my way home - they have really cleared the land nicely there.

^ I've been watching that as well.  At first I thought they were just getting rid of the little brick building because the owner didn't want to deal with it (taxes, etc.), but then when the trees started coming down...  I'm very curious now :)

Trees in exchange for sewers? That sounds progressive... Am I missing something?  :wtf:

Yes.  You are blending two different projects it would appear.

I'm surprised there's no discussion of the MEGA DOPE modern structure going up on the corner of University and W. 11th. It's hard to tell if it's just a contemporary house or something more, but it's definitely modern as hell. It's still just a frame but all be damned, I see something amazing being built. Forum Architects are the ones behind this wall of windows of the city.

Is there a picture of it

Gillota Fuel Products Inc., owner, appeals to establish use, to maintain a gas station and repair garage, located on a 95’ x 66’ corner parcel in a General Retail Business District; contrary to Sections 352.08 through 352.11, no landscaping is provided and a landscaping strip 10 feet wide is required along the rear property line where the lot abuts a Residence District and a landscaping strip 4 feet wide is required along the street frontages; contrary to Section 343.18(d) a driveway width exceeds the  maximum of 30 feet; and a repair garage is first permitted in a Semi-Industry District, provided that  the use is not less than 100 feet from a Residence District as stated in Section 345.03©(2) of the Cleveland Codified Ordnances.

First postponement requested by the Councilman for time to allow the local block club to meet and review the appellants’ plan for the request.

That's the little gas station that has been there for years.  I wonder what's happening.

It's to the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) and looks like he is applying for a variance to continue to use his service station despite the fact that the landscaping is out of code, the driveway is too wide, and the service garage is too close to a residence.  He was cited for those violations and now is appealing that citation.  That's my best guess anyways from reading the chinese the BZA uses to write its agenda.  Quite often, the BZA will request that the neighbors 'sign off.'  It appears that is what the Councilman is trying to accomplish.  Since there are plans to review, I'm giong to guess that the owner is proposing some modifications to the landscaping in order to get a variance for his driveway and garage.  Maybe some noise insulation for his garage as well?  The BZA will likely approve whatever the owner and neighbors agree to.

NOACA Governing Board Approves $600,000 for Professor Avenue Intersection Improvements!

Inside Tremont

Vol. 26, Issue 1    January, 2011

"Seventeen Northeast Ohio bicycle and pedestrian, multi-purpose trail, and streetscaping projects moved one step closer to implementation. At its December 10th meeting, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency Governing Board approved approximately $9 million in federal transportation enhancement (TE) funding for projects in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain and Medina counties...

...The four intersections along Professor Avenue, including the intersection with Jefferson Avenue, College Avenue, Literary Avenue, and Fairfield Avenue (conceptual drawing above), are several such intersections. Currently, the angle of the intersections and/ or the length of the crosswalks are not optimal for nonvehicular traffic. This proposed project will work to address these problems by decreasing the length of the crosswalks through curb bump-outs and curb radius reductions..."

http://tremontwest.org/index/cms-filesystem-action?file=newsletters/january2011.pdf

Well glad to see they are finally re-developing those intersections. One issue I have with this is that they made no mention of street lighting. It's great that bikes will have more space on intersections, but at night (when there are too many people on the sidewalk to ride a bike) there's nearly NO lighting for pedestrians. I really was hoping for some money added to account for better street lighting, especially on the section of Professor south of Jefferson. With no lighting there, most people don't venture down to the new Turkish restaurant or the businesses down there. Would be nice to properly light up the entire street.

I would place a much higher priority on lighting than on these curb bumpouts.

Agreed 327. And the curbs in question aren't exactly small. I know the Jefferson intersection is actually quite large in terms of curb space. The only curb I could see as needing expansion would be the intersection of Professor and W 10th. Other than that the rest of these curbs don't exactly need any additional 'bumpouts'.

It looks like the public will be asked for some input "in late spring or early summer", accdg to the article in Inside Tremont.

As good a time as any to bring up the lighting issue.

The only date I see on this pdf is a scanned PD article (June 27, 2010) but I read through it fast. Perhaps an answer to the lighting situation in Tremont? Anyone know about this?

10,000 Tremont LED Lighting Project

"NEO residents said that they would enjoy visiting Cleveland more often if there was better lighting within the Cleveland neighborhoods. They felt that improved lighting would reduce crime, enhance historical beauty, and increase the patron base of the neighborhoods...

...The 10,000 Lighting Team formed and chose the Tremont neighborhood as the "Test Pilot" location for this project".

http://www.tremontwest.org/index/cms-filesystem-action?file=10,000.pdf

Cool... but this should be a fundamental front-burner priority, rather than one of "10,000 little ideas."

Good. The artwalks are fantastic times in Tremont and it would be great to see some legitimate lighting on the sidewalks. I was surprised by that crime statistic. I walk down Professor and near that intersection all the time and rarely feel unsafe. But I am also over 6' tall and weigh 230 (which may be why I feel safer). The only disappointing part of this is that they plan on just attaching the lights to the telephone poles already around the streets. Frankly those poles give the streets a run-down feel to it. I would have preferred they spend a bit more money and bury those wires and put up some nicer looking lighting poles.

Yeah it'd be nice to have those lines buried.

Across the street from 806 Wine Bar, the former Grumpy's Cafe building is turning out well. It caught fire several years ago and is undergoing renovation.

Hmm, so after the fire did Grumpy's move to their current spot?

^ Yes, Grumpy's moved to W.14th about a year and a half after the fire.

Funny sidenote-- I used to live in that building.  Fortunately, I moved out a few years before the fire.  The top window on the left was in my bedroom.  It looks like they have made the front section of the 3rd floor into a deck while retaining the original facade.  Pretty cool, but my bed wouldn't have a roof over it any more.   Good to see this building finally being redeveloped after many years of sitting vacant.

new tremont parking lot uses bioswales to manage storm water

Thursday, April 28, 2011

The Tremont neighborhood recently celebrated the opening of a new parking lot at Jefferson and Professor avenues that will not only help alleviate the neighborhood's parking crunch, but also help solve the region's storm water management problem.

The parking lot incorporates bioswales that will prevent rainwater from entering the sewer system. When rain falls onto the property, it runs off into carefully designed plant systems that gradually release it back into the ground.

http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/tremontparkinglot042811.aspx

^Cool!  Is this lot on the corner that has/had the low stone/brick wall?

Makes one wonder whether we could avoid some of the massive CSO mitigation costs we're incurring now had this kind of thing been required by code for every large parking lot for the last 50 years.

^ excellent point!

This is promising technology for us in the Great Lakes region.

I was in Lincoln park today and remembered something I've been wondering.  What is the building directly west of Civilization, with the porthole windows?  The front doors make me think that it's some sort of ballroom or something like that.  I just wonder what kind of redevelopment possibilities there are for it.  Looks like a cool building.

When it opens on September 1, The Nest will be yet another creative weapon in Tremont's arsenal to lure art-friendly shoppers to the neighborhood. Located in a storefront immediately adjacent to Edison's Pub, the boutique and gallery will feature an eclectic array of fine art, photography, jewelry and clothing.

That building is a film "studio" where they do production and shooting of mostly commercials. It used to be a dance hall (I think it was called Polish Library Hall) and has a large ballroom in the back of the building that they now use as a sound stage/studio.

Yeah, we all know how that is going to go these days.

Sorry, but that's where you got to go to get money for road projects. They are the "bank" for government-sponsored transportation projects. And there's a difference here than with ODOT-managed projects like the Inner Belt or the West Shoreway: ODOT won't be managing it. Only funding it.

I am new to posting on UO, but have been a Tremont resident for close to a year.  I was curious if anyone has info on the how many more units will be built for starkweather place condos.  From what I can see it looks like they are planning to build in the vacant lot right on the corner of 7th and Starkweather. I heard they were to be around 31 units???

I was walking through Tremont a week or so ago and went past a storefront on Professor [2271] with a new door that I didn't recognize before. In one of the storefronts, there's a new door, with frosted glass with the words "Tremont Rod & Gun Club" in the window, a picture of it is below. Any idea what it is ? An art gallery ? private club ? Some Yuppie's [un]funny inside joke ?

I also did a quick google search, found nothing on it...

xp26U.jpg

I looked in the County Database, no property listed with a 2271 address...

Huh I've been in Tremont a lot lately...didnt notice that.

Btw, is the term "yuppie" still used?

How do you know they weren't "buppies" or "guppies"? (other useless 80s words)

The Rod & Gun Club had the door open during Taste of Tremont, but a rope or something keeping random people from wandering in. You could see a row of pretty fishing rods lined up along the wall, but no guns.

Other than that, I have never seen it "open" and pass it multiple times a day.

I suspect you're right that it's an inside joke type thing.

Thanks Clueless!!  I like the more "unknown or unspoken" developments....very much appreciated!

Thanks!

The addition next to the Fairfield market is adctually a kitchen expansion for Southside.

Wow, that's quite the transformation of the Asterisk gallery storefront. Tremont looking sharp!

Great pics. The Asterisk building looks so terrific now!! And I've noticed that Cleveland doubles look way better when the second floor balcony is opened up with a railing, vs a solid railing.

Comparison:

h20.jpg

p.s. one thing, the look of the Fairfield Market gives the impression that the neighborhood is crime ridden.

TWDC should make them a Storefront Renovation program priority.

I'd guess that the state of that facade discourages a lot of walk-in convenience shopping from neighborhood residents.  I don't understand why a store operator would leave money on the table like that.  Seems to be an issue with corners stores throughout the city.

I'm sure in some neighborhoods it makes sense.  It probably made sense in Tremont when the store was opened.  But it doesn't anymore, and a new storefront would be a win all around.

The owner of Visible Voice Bookstore bought the house next door and rehabbed it.

What's going in that building next to Lincoln Park Baths? I love the stained-glass window on the front of that. Was that always there/covered-up by something else?

The rumor going around the block club is it's going to be some kind of pizzeria-cum-upscale brewpub.

Not really.  If I'm picking something up from a convenience store, it's because I'm in a huge rush or in the middle of an emergency, so I'm going to go to the closest one aesthetics be damned.  I think the high prices are a bigger deterrent to me shopping at the Fairfield Market than anything else, but like I said, there are reasons why I would (and do) go there.
