I don't think Bedrock has an amazing plan for TC. If so, we likely would have heard about it.  I think they just want to get some activity in there quickly so it doesn't look like a ghost town during the All-star weekend.

Then why let people leave right before all star weekend.

It seems a little bizarre that you have an NBA owner trying to spur retail in the once great Tower City, while our guy with the alleged retail connections, Stark, is now AWOL.

Meanwhile our football owner is somehow our primary lakefront developer lol.

That's a real head scratcher.  Maybe there is more to it than what was mentioned upthread.

Detroit get's a Gucci store downtown while Cleveland can't even have a Bath and Body. A lot of you may be optimistic for whatever reason, but this a punch in the gut for someone like me waiting for years for improved downtown retail and overall downtown vitality. Cleveland keeps being left in the dust compared to it's peer cities like Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, CInci, and downtown retail is certainly one of them.

You should take the bull by the horn and open a store downtown.  I believe in you buddy.

I get the frustration about Cleveland's anemic retail, but just a few thoughts. First, downtown Detroit may be getting a Gucci boutique this summer, but there currently isn't a Gucci in all of Michigan outside of Sommerset Mall in Troy. Second, and let me phrase this delicately, Gucci of 2022 isn't Gucci of 1982, and the clientele has... changed dramatically. Sure something is generally better than nothing, but that particular brand's reputation has completely 180'd.

If you say "Gucci" in a post more than 3x in a post, it will summon the spirit of @MyTwoSense😃

But seriously, maybe we'll get a GUCCI with the suggestion emails I've sent Bedrock to develop a real casino outlet mall in TC.

This isn't a story of Downtown being unable to support retail. Quite the opposite. That store has been number one in sales in the region for years and years. Even topping Beachwood Place by quite a margin. That speaks well for the demand for downtown retail imo. If that company has any sense, they'll open another storefront somewhere else downtown.

I would hope so too and preferably around Public Square but Dan Gilbert owns so much over there that I doubt that would happen. The Euclid Grand space or the old Geiser space by Heinen's would be perfect, heavy traffic, an influx of visitors and residents with the new(ish) hotels and apartments. Honestly it sells itself.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. And sadly with every national chain that closes at Tower City we always think “maybe they will open elsewhere downtown” and it has yet to happen. Either there is something much bigger going on or Bedrock has absolutely no clue what they are doing here. For a lot of people, each of these stores closing gives one less and less reason to ever go to TC.

Regarding Tower City---from Crains:

"...Bedrock has signed more than a dozen leases at Tower City in recent months. And a few temporary tenants have signed on for the All-Star Game. Complex Networks, a New York-based media and entertainment company, partnered with Bedrock to open a pop-up shop in mid-January. Another installation, a basketball half-court called NBA Ice Buckets, now straddles the mall's deactivated main fountain. The NBA is offering patrons a shot at prizes, including game tickets.

The bulk of the new leases, though, are longer-term arrangements with homegrown businesses...Occupancy at the mall had dwindled to roughly 15% by last spring, when Bedrock and its consultants kicked off their leasing campaign. Once the incoming tenants open, the space should be 50% to 60% full, Greaner said. The company is walking a careful line, trying to bring activity to the property without making any commitments that will hamstring a more holistic redevelopment push..."

With all the focus on the developments happening around town l think we lose sight of what l think is an incredibly valuable building. Tower City.

When it first opened l was blown away by the design. It was built on a grand scale with a huge light filled center space. It had great views looking in and looking out. It was connected to RTA, two hotels and office space. Now it's connected to a casino. It has everything a real city has.

But as long as urban retail remains challenged Tower City will struggle to find itself. Still, l think the facility has too many working parts to ignore. We can't throw the baby out with the bath water. If downtown continues to grow its population it's only a matter of time before there will be a need for retail. We are sitting on an underutilized, incredible asset. It still has all those connections to other assets. It still has those storefronts. I can't believe we can't figure out a way to merge a growing retail need with a perfect retail space. Tower City is still there. It is still beautiful. It doesn't need to be 1980 again to work. Figure it out. It's too valuable and yes, too necessary to give up on.

I wanted to say that I walked through Beachwood Place yesterday and found that a lot of the vacancies were filled.  It looked better than when was there last.  I did not recognize some of the new stores and don't know which, if any, are local startups, or "pop-ups."  The Banana Republic and Microsoft stores, both in prominent locations, were still empty.

As an old, I remember the shops in the old Arcade, like passport to Peru.  Local stores sometimes selling really cool things (there was also a store that sold fake IDs) or very specific items.  It seems without a comprehensive vision and plan, that is the future tower city.

yes, passport to peru was a great place -- and i would add there was a fake id shop in the terminal tower too. that's where i got mine when i was a teen. but then we would go over to e4th to mosers or the rathskeller for beers, and they never asked for id's lol.

This speaks well for Cleveland.. this store was originally in the plan for the Beachwood Place exterior (Richmond Road side) expansion maybe 7-8+ years ago. The restaurants at these new RH Galleries become instant hot spots. Still many major markets without these huge mansions which have been big in the brand's significant growth... with $10K sofas and the like.

This leaves the space originally earmarked for this store at Pinecrest, in the parking lot at the west side of center near Shake Shack, for what I believe will be a right sized, 2 floor Nordstrom in the next few years.

As a result, Nordstrom will end up pulling out of Beachwood Place.  The area will only support one regular Nordstrom.  Unfortunately for Beachwood Place, should that move occur, it will leave a large anchor department store empty and difficult to fill.

Exactly.. one store only in the market.  Kansas City is the latest Nordstrom market to swap a 200,000+ sf store for a 120,000-140,000 sf store. Indianapolis is another.

Interesting... I wonder if Macys would leave University Heights to Beachwood. Interested in what Saks would do if Nordstrom left. Back when it opened in '05, I thought Crocker Park might see a Nordstrom or some other mid-luxury department store.

It is thinking along those lines that will help retailers stay in business.  Too many retailers would not scale back operations and square footage until it was too late.  The current location has 215k square feet.  Also, based upon the issues that have started to plague Beachwood Place, Nordstrom may be glad to pull out of that mall.  Pinecrest is not immune from them, but it is not the trouble spot that Beachwood Place is earning for a reputation.

Doubtful if Macy's would relocate to Beachwood Place.  The UH store is 167k square feet while the Nordstrom store is 215k square feet.  It would increase their square footage by around 30%.  It works against the thinking of reducing size and leaner operations.  The shift slightly to the east wouldn't really gain them that much if anything.

True, but maybe the store is shrunk, by converting some space into in-line mall stores... even though Beachwood has been having a hard time keeping the store space it already has leased. Just a thought.

As Beachwood Place is already having leasing issues, it will make it the leasing of Nordstrom's space even more difficult.  I just wonder if there is any real benefit for Macy's moving a couple of miles to the east coupled with a relocation cost.  Macy's also appears to be one of those retailers that desires to own its building instead of leasing space.  The Nordstrom store is a leased building.  A clue to when Nordstrom may consider relocation would be timed with the expiration of the lease.

^ Interesting - both Saks and Nordstrom appear to be leased spaces (Dillards is owned by the retailer). Given the layout of the store with the three levels and exterior entrances on both the first and second floors, I could see Nordstrom consolidating onto the second and third floors, with another non-retail use filling the first floor. I don't think Beachwood Place is doing that bad, even considering the police actions (which imo the media likes to overly focus on similarly to any little thing that happens downtown). They had a bunch of big wins with leasing right before the pandemic with H&M Home and JD Sports, and during the pandemic the started converting the old Maggiano's and H&M space into co-working space. While spaces lately have not been being filled with big name stores, they are still being filled. The mall certainly isn't dying, though it is evolving.

Glad to see Haley getting some love.

First Look: Cool World, The ‘80s-inspired Experiential Retail Shop From Haley Himiko Morris, Opens Today In Gordon Square: The renowned Cleveland artist is known for creating new universes. Now, you can enter hers with her Gordon Square shop that launched on Oct. 1.

Being in the presence of Haley Himiko Morris’s work is like entering another world. The local artist has become well known for her eclectic style of pattern blocking and ‘80s inspired psychedelic colors, often seen in interactive mediums such as dance parties and unique face mask patterns.

Now, Morris’s latest art piece is an experiential retail shop in Gordon Square called Cool World, which opened on Oct. 1. Since acquiring the space two months ago, Morris has completely transformed the 650-square foot location with Himiko Memorabilia’s signature brand and aesthetic. Shoppers can expect vintage furniture and clothes as well as handmade jewelry and accessories.

While the store is a one-stop shop of all the products Morris creates, she’s also aiming to build a transformative and nostalgic experience, like walking through a theme park or carnival.

I recall rumors of now defunct Jacobson's department Store going into either or both Crocker Park or Legacy Village when being developed. Von Maur is another name mentioned at one time (and could be a Nordstrom or Saks filler if one leaves Beachwood). I do not wish department store turnover or moves at Beachwood Place or in Cleveland. Just a hunch.

Mall NOT dying dying but needs a jolt. And needs to keep the anchors happy and healthy. Maggiano's still hurts... they have 50+ restaurants and only 2 have ever closed... Beachwood's being 1 of 2. That space was just 2-3x too big tho real departure reason never stated. By all accounts = successful otherwise.

We need more events not just residents!

Tower City was PACKED today 🙂. I loved the energy though in the back of my mind I had to remind myself that we’re still dealing with a pandemic: however- it’s been a while since I’ve seen the place that crowded. That’s what the city is supposed to feel like- buzzing. I can say that of the side conversations you come into and out of- not one negative thing was said about the city. We’re leaving a good impression on the folks who came in from out of town- save for the weather 😄. But hey- weathers bad in other towns as well.

Appreciate the post.

That’s really good to hear and thanks for the update! On the plus side, it’s supposed to a high of 45 tomorrow and mostly sunny.

@urbanetics_has been tweeting lots of pics downtown today. I wish I was there...sort of. Cancun isn't too bad right now either!

Taking Evereve’s former space at Beachwood Place in July will be SoftMoc, a Canadian shoe retailer with only three US locations (Mall of America, Kenwood Towne Center in Cinci, and Jordan Creek in Iowa).

Did some shopping today at Beachwood and it was crowded throughout. There was a VIP party at Dillard’s with a DJ. Every entrance to every store was open like normal.  Nice to see things getting back to normal.

J. Crew Factory is coming soon to Legacy Village in the former Charming Charlie space.  Solid addition for that side of Legacy.  Nearest J. Crew Factory locations are the outlets in Grove City and Columbus/Sunbury.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Saks Off 5th in the next door space in former Granite City/Joseph Beth - since Aurora Farma location recently closed and they are suburban non-outlet center locations in other areas these days. It does appear that space may be leased just not announced.

I'm so glad to hear it closed. That location (Aurora Farms in general) was so dated/dumpy. I was about to question why they would locate an outlet store so close to the full line store, but then I remembered Nordstrom Rack is at Legacy too, so that could be a pretty cool dynamic going on between BWP and LV.

I thought when they announced the bookstore was moving to the old ABC space they also indicated they have a new tennant already in place for where the bookstore was.

I haven’t seen anything about it, maybe I missed it. I’ve been looking for permits on the window to say if anything is coming and haven’t seen anything.
