I think that's an excellent idea for Tower City. I doubt Forest City would agree -- which probably makes it a good reason to try it.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse with the Panera closing, but saw this Crain's article today and thought I would share. Apparently they just got spooked from the other store closings and pulled out; no mention of a rent increase. Odd.

so Ann Taylor closes, and Panera closes because of it?

That just makes no sense at all. Here's a clue Covelli:  people don't go, "gee I want a pants-suit and an asiago bagel, but where or where on Earth can I do both at the same time?"

Actually Pope, they do.  This is the "perception" vs. "reality" factor in full play here.

pulling in retailers is like a big puzzle.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, if FC bought in a MALL management company, tower city could be solid mid tier to upper mid tier mall.

I can see that flying more at a Beachwood standalone mall, but not at TC.

Have you been downtown at lunch in Panera on a workday? Everyone seemingly is working and on lunch, not shopping. You don't see ann taylor and gymboree bags in line, you see briefcases and attaches.

(and its no secret how high a % of total business a food franchise makes at lunch)

What exactly is Lisa Kreiger's job?!

Maybe she's the nicest person in the world, and maybe there's more to the story - but she's the person who was quoted with "We aren't aware of any tenants planning to depart because of it" - about J. Crew's relocation to Crocker Park. I could understand the higher-ups not being aware, I could understand the custodial staff not being aware but uhhh...

I wish them well but I'm not surprised - on more than one occasion I was set to spend money there on my lunch break. Unfortunately, every time I stopped by, they weren't open during their posted hours. The one time they were actually open - they forgot to turn their "open/closed" sign around, and the only reason I was able to check them out was because I pulled on the door and voila - "oops, guess we should remember to turn the sign!".

I support my locals above all else, but they have to run their ship just like anyone else if they expect to stay afloat.

I had the exact same experience when they were Nabici Collection. Poor management.

Maybe they're going to Hopkins now.  :-) :|

Damn you people!  Stay away from my bargain spots!

Get there early, bring a van/truck and be ready to pay on the spot.  Be weary of the uptight desperate housewifes that have the potential to pull suburban temper tantrum.  I gotten some drastically marked down pieces there.

I checked their website, are the prices any less scary at the store than they are on the web?

I haven't seen the prices, but probably not. I know Hermann Miller and Knoll are top brand, beautifully designed stuff. You'll pay quite a bit for either, even if they're marked down.

Yes. I say at least go and look around.

Here is another one of my shopping tip.

Also, for those in the hunt for home goods, please call the IX center and see when the break down from the H&G show is taking place.  Many times exhibitors will sell the test models at rock bottom prices, as its cheaper to sell than transport/ship to the next big location.    About 8 years ago, I bought 1k gourmet coffee machine with all the bells and whistles for $185. I got my washing machine and dryer for $215.

Awesome tip!

MTS, thanks for the confirmation and tips....I'll have to check it out next time I am in town.  A tip for you too....though you may already know being the power shopper that you are.  The Merchandise Mart in Chicago has a sample sale also that is huge and open to the public, I have found some good stuff....Wilkhahn tables, Brayton chairs, Steelcase credenza to name a few

Sweetie, been there...done that...got access before the public!  HA!!

Ahh, jeez.

Brigade, one of a precious few stand-alone merchandise retailers downtown, is packing it in and moving to the suburbs. Can't we have *some* retail downtown? Please?

E-mail received today:

Dear Friends, Patrons and Neighbors,

In 2001 we opened our doors for business in the Historic Warehouse

District.  As we are grateful to have made many new friends in the

process, we have come to the determination it is to our advantage that

we transfer all our business to our Coventry Brigade.  We are thrilled

with the initiative of shifting our flagship store to that area and

hope that all of you will not forget to frequently visit us at our new

spot.  To celebrate we are throwing one last party at our Downtown

Location to thank everyone for all their support.  We will be clearing

out much of the merchandise to make plenty of space so we can

celebrate in good fashion.  There will be an abundance of gaming and

good times so get your poker faces ready.  We hope you can stop by to

commemorate the occasion.  Please join us this Saturday, as we will be

celebrating late into the evening with great music provided by your

friends at Brigade.

DAMMIT! I love Brigade. The stores in the WD and the one at Coventry always carried different lines of merch. Although this sucks, I will still choose to buy from them over Nordstrom/Saks/etc. because they are a local start up. Dan, the owner is perhaps one of the most fashion-forward minded people in Cleveland and really is making an effort to bring lines like G-STAR RAW, and other stuff from LA and Europe to Cleveland, and this is stuff we probably never would have saw.

Although I wish them the best, and I support them doing what they feel they need to do to stay afloat, this is very sad. That one block was always my favorite downtown shopping spot, since I could hop across to Style Lounge and Constantino's while I was down there.

How is that retail related??

hmm....I see.  I don't know what I was thinking.

Is there anywhere else to put it them?...or leave it be?

^if we don't have one, we need a general business thread for Cleveland.

From LA or Europe??  Really?  humph!  I'm not even going there.  I think he needs to work on operations, PR and Marketing.

Wasn't it Mike and Brian that owned and ran Brigade?  The guys who design Wrath Arcane?

WRATH ARCANE was started on January 3rd, 2006 when Cleveland boutique owner Brian O’neill (Im guessing Brigade) called Cleveland designer and long-time friend Sean Bilovecky.

I do agree that Nabici had it's problems, but Brigade as a whole has been better...just not QUITE there yet. They carry some awesome stuff though and are really on top of what's hot.

No really, I enjoy cleaning up after you kids.

Double yaawwwwwwwwwwwwwn!

Yeah, do we really need another "California fashion" store?

Damn, I was hoping no one would post it ;)

ATTENTION EVERYONE! GO TO THE TREMONT TAP HOUSE! IT IS LOCATED AT 2572 SCRANTON ROAD. VISIT IT EVERY DAY! ESPECIALLY ON MAY DAY!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Ohhhh right... yeah, don't bother with Banyan Tree folks.

In the spirit of MayDay...

I definitely DIDN'T make it to Banyan Tree on Sunday, and bought absolutely NO fabulous home accessories, and my fiance assuredly did NOT absolutely love the store, and am glad I shopped at WalMart INSTEAD of shopping at Banyan Tree.

I work with a lot of contractors and the consensus amongst them is that Home Depot now feels as if it has a stronghold on the Northeast Ohio home improvement market.  As a result, it has increased prices without fearing that it will lose business.  According to them, the increases are not across the board at other home improvement retailers and local specialty stores.  Just an FYI for those of you that are interested.

Well, I guess another storefront is filled in..

AmSan Opens New Showroom and Store in Cleveland

February 25, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ohio, February 25, 2008 – AmSan, a leading national distributor of janitorial supplies and cleaning products, recently opened their new downtown Cleveland showroom and store.  Located at 3225 Chester Avenue in Cleveland, the 5,000 square-foot facility features a product showroom, self-serve shopping area, will-call/pick-up area, equipment repair, and equipment demonstration area. This new facility is the only one of its kind in the downtown Cleveland area dedicated to servicing the product and training needs of janitorial and sanitary professionals.

AmSan’s new Cleveland store stocks a wide variety of janitorial products including brands like Rubbermaid, Procter & Gamble, Tennant Equipment, Kimberly-Clark Paper, and AmSan’s exclusive brand Renown.  Customers should inquire about training seminars conducted at the Cleveland facility on topics such as MRSA, Green Cleaning, and Right to Know laws via AmSan University.

The new AmSan facility is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  AmSan’s local staff of knowledgeable and courteous professionals can be reached at 216-432-0546.

Who needs the Medical Mart when we have Janitorial Mart?

Is this in the District of Design?

AmSan University- Cleveland's newest higher education option.  How long till they build a new rec center, the mark of a quality university?

True Religion Brand Jeans (http://www.truereligionbrandjeans.com/) is opening a store on the second floor Saks wing of Beachwood place within the next two weeks. This will be their first company store in Ohio (although many luxury retails/boutiques already carry their items) and really one of the first outside of a major "destination" shopping area. Here goes all my money.....

In addition, dELiAs (http://store.delias.com/) will be opening on the second floor as well, I believe in the Dillard's wing...

There is also speculation about Tiffany (I feel good about this one), Burberry, Armani Exchange, and Abercrombie's new brands RUEHL no.925 and Gilly Hicks making their way into Beachwood Place in the coming months.

"speculation" from who??  Details?  Hell, they are suppose to open up a store downstairs from me.

Also beachwood is a major shopping destination - for Ohio and western PA

Also, if Tiffany and Burberry open a store a Beachwood, I will eat my keyboard!

Is this a thread about jeans styles and sales, or a thread about the Cleveland Retail Economy?

MTS, you'll eat your keyboard?!?!?! HAHAHAHA! Funny! HA!

And if these retailers come to Beachwood, people can stop saying how Easton is the mecca of Ohio shopping b/c they have a men's Benetton section the size of my kitchen...

I'd like Zara or Club Monaco since I can't afford Burberry but maybe we'll save those for downtown.

Honey I sure would!  Although I would rather see those stores on Euclid Ave. in downtown cleveland.  Im sorry Easton is at best a "c" grade mall and Beachwood is a "B+" at best.

Zara and Club Monaco can go to Beachwood.  Keep all that crap at Beachwood, bring the big boys back downtown.

This is getting old.

Yeah I don't get how or why Clevelanders get excited about traveling down to Easton. All you have to do is go to Cedar and Richmond and you have the exact same thing, plus Saks!

Well, I guess another storefront is filled in..
