You individuals sound like you're not very big shoppers, anyway, if you don't see any reason to go there.  I am a very major shopper - ranging from the most inexpensive discount stores and second-hand places to the most luxurious emporiums. So where do your purchase your clothes or hardware or gifts that are more suitable than Richmond's three department stores and smaller shops? :?

Is this a joke?  LOL  I'm the KING (I could blink and spend a grand) of shopping and there doesn't appear to be a damn thing in Richmond I would want.

Boy, has this here thread gone off of the rails.

Why aren't more folks going to Richmond Mall when it's the closest enclosed mall to Cleveland Hts?  That's easy:

- All enclosed malls are doing poorly, save for those that are regional draws, such as Beachwood Place.

- Enclosed malls are now competing with strip centers (like Severance and Golden Gate and University Square).  There is nothing that you can buy in Richmond that you can't in one of these other places.

- NE Ohio is insanely over-retailed.

- The internet.

Read more about it here: http://planning.co.cuyahoga.oh.us/retail/  It's nine years old now, but most everything in it still reads true.

But you admit to really only shopping in high-end stores.  Didn't you say earlier that you've never even been in macy's?

that would mean rubbing elbows with the proletariat and the hoi polloi!

I'm excluding stores not in Cleveland.  I'm a thrift store queen as well.  I've been inside Macy's but not a customer.  The store I wont shop in is D******d's

Does anyone have anything specific on the Brooks Brothers inquiry of my first post?  All my guys would divulge at the Tower City store today - amid the good "Make a Wish" pastries - was "nothing is set in stone" (or something to that effect).  My response was "well, the Eton opening seems to be," and I said something about keeping the three open does not gel with the pattern in other metropolitan areas I'm familiar with.

Avogardo that study is dumfounding.  I've been trying to find that info consolidated into one place for some time... the fact that it is 9 years old and there has been siginficant addition to retail since that point is nothing short of frightening.

Oh Crain's - Could you get into this, please?

McCleveland - for the Greater Cleveland retail study please call Jonathan Giblin at NOACA: (216) 241-2414 ex. 346.

is there an updated one?

Well, I suggest you ask JG about it. 8-)

Ok call me crazy, but wouldn't a Brooks Brothers opening at Eton present a lot more of a threat to the Beachwood location 3 miles down the road than the downtown location?  It seems like it would make a lot more sense, if we're talking about metropolitan-area strategy, to have a store downtown to serve the downtown office workers and the Westsiders, and a Beachwood OR Eton location for the 271 corridor and Eastsiders.

Thanks for that link.  The exec summary (I haven't read the whole report yet) confirmed one observation: given all the wealth still there, there is a surprising (to me) lack of retail in the Heights.  I suppose one reason is the lack of traffic congestion in the region, which makes proximity matter a lot less than it might in other metro areas;even from the western Heights, Beachwood Place is a pretty quick drive.

Of course I'm totally in favor of the downtown one remaining open.  It also happens to be what is probably the most architecturally gorgeous BB interior in the world....  But the general pattern here is for stores of that ilk to leave downtown, and I have heard the guys there worry about it.  It also recently gave up its Sunday hours.

Apparently some are already assuming the Eton would replace Beachwood, but there doesn't seem to be any concrete evidence this is the plan, yet.  Saw the Eton space last evening - impressive.

Avogadro nailed the story on Richmond Town Square.    Beachwood Mall is a short drive away for anyone with upscale tastes.  You don't have to be rich to WANT to shop at Beachwood instead of Richmond Mall.  Some "urban" infuences crept into Richmond Mall (caveat: there is nothing "urban" about Richmond Heights; I grew up there.)  Let's face it, a good portion of RH's 25% African American population, including many teens, are patrons.  If black adults aren't going to scare off the more sensible shoppers from Highland Heights, black teenagers sure as heck are.  And I don't mean "scare" in the most literal sense of the word.  Those folks probably feel more comfortable going to Beachwood, is all.

Part two of Richmond Mall's likely future demise is it's location.  Could it survive?  In better economic times, possibly.  But the fact is that it's location is actually fairly isolated from a much larger base of shoppers in Euclid.  The timing wasn't right, but if they were going to rebuild/renovate a mall, Euclid Square Mall would have been much better suited to it as it is not as close to other options as Richmond Mall.  Legacy Village and Beachwood Place are 7 minutes south.  Just east are big-boxes Home Depot, Dick's and Kohl's; a little father is Eastgate, which is getting bigger.  Northern South Euclid and Cleveland Heights are served well by Severance.  That leaves the area north as your biggest potential draw for clientele, and the simple fact is that Euclid and western Lake County have a much higher population base than Richmond Heights, whose more affluent residents have probably decided to shun their own mall already anyway.  The Euclid Square Mall location would have served a much larger group of people and might have had a chance to survive.    What would have became or is to become of the Richmond Mall location is another story.

Now I just heard from someone that Crain's had reported the plan for Brooks Brothers is to close both Tower City and Beachwood when Eton opens!!  Has anyone else seen or heard this and where?  Can't find it in Crain's search.  I see the whole Detroit metopolitan area has only two "regular retail" Brooks Brothers, with one opening only recently in an upscale, exurbia mall, so it is possible we'd have only the one I suppose.  Comments, information please!!!

There was a rumor a while back on this board that the TC location was supposed to close at the end of June, but last I saw it was still open.

It's very much still open.  The rumor I just heard was that it would close about Dec. 31st.  Beachwood also.  However, the Eton isn't supposed to even open until Spring, so I don't really think this would be too accurate.

Does anyone have anything concrete??? Or at least something in writing?

the starbucks @ steelyard commons appears to have closed.

I doubted that a Starbucks could work in Steelyard. Putting two locations there, including the Target store, was just stupid.

Is that the first closing in Steelyards? I was thinking to myself as I drove by the otherday that it looked like everything was still open two years later even with the current state of the economy.

I believe so.  Things seem to be doing pretty well there, really because that was an unserved niche in that area of town.  And with respect to two Starbucks locations, if I'm at Steelyard, chances are I'm going to Target at some point, and if I want Starbucks, I just get it from the one inside Target.  It's a completely full service Starbucks with all their products.  I think only once or twice had I patronized the actual location over the past year and a half.  The Chipotle in the same building, however, is always crazy to the max.

EDIT:  Brilliant idea!  Expand the Chipotle so that we can have drive-thru Chipotle!  Oh the glory!

Question?  Was the closing due to sales or a direct result of the worldwise closing starbucks announced.  They over expanded and wanted to cut back.

Until an answer to that question can be established, I would say it was a bad thing for SYC.

if you want that Burrito you need to walk to the counter like everyone else.... :-D

I dont want to be around the day Chipotle gets a drive thru. It would be absolute chaos

I would say both - but more reflective that this particular location wasn't a good fit in the first place. I think docbroc's idea is great but an even better one would be to patronize Ohio City Burrito (next to Old Angle) on West 25th :-)

From the article on Tremont Art Walk today in Friday! magazine:

There's a passing reference to a new record shop, called Loop, opening on W. 11th. Sounds like it'll carry vinyl only. I've noticed the signage has been up on the storefront for a while but I wasn't sure what it was going to be. Sorry if this is old news!

This is actually the second vinyl shop to open in Tremont in the last 6 months or so. The other is on Kenilworth near Visible Voice Books.

As Cardsnextyear mentioned it another spot, I guess it does deserve mention... there are 2 new shops that have both opened in the last couple weeks in the Arcade downtown.  I believe "gordo's" which is a novelty shop / party supply store, and "the runway" which is a men's / women's (primarily women's) accessories shop.  My wife aproves of this place.

Was there a change in management or something that suddenly places are opening in the Arcade?

nope... there were a lot of factors in why so many places closed down to begin with. some of it was due to the EC project, some other place had different factors.  It's nice to see the pendulum swinging in the other direction finally.

Yes thats great.  It was sad to go in and see so little activity, and empty storefronts which further gave people little reason to go in.  I always thought it should be a little mecca of little indie ladies shops or something like that.....  A critical mass that would draw people in.

I know when Ive stayed at the hotel, on weekends it would be so quite.  I read reviews where people were like "Its part of this empty, almost spooky structure"

Wasn't the Runway in Tower City before?

this looks like a totally different runway.

Uh oh... Runway Battle!

I doubted that a Starbucks could work in Steelyard. Putting two locations there, including the Target store, was just stupid.

Starbucks is the first closing in Steelyard.  There are some vacancies on the Target end and near the T-Mobile, but I guess that that's expected.  It has to be less than 5%.

I live by Steelyard and pass by it often.  It seems very successful.  I'd say that parking lots are on average about 25% full on the strip to the east.  I've seen the Walmart parking lot about 90%+ full on a normal Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

^Mitchell Schneider (the developer of Steelyard Commons) just did a presentation in one of my classes at CSU regarding the project.  Love it or hate it, he really capitalized on the City of Cleveland being under served by national retailers.  The numbers were crazy- since retailers usually go by household income, many never looked at the inner city because of the lower incomes.  But the DENSITY of individuals living around Steelyard Commons was what made the difference, along with some other facts which are not usually publicized.  Example- more households with $50,000 incomes live within a 3 to 5 mile radius of Steelyards than live in places like Westlake, Avon, etc.  However, there were no national retailers serving this population, while the metro is over-saturated with retail.

What surprised me was that he's had other developers such as Scott Wolstein and even FOREST CITY say that this is a great project.  It surprised me that the execs from Forest City could even say anything great about a project in the city.  Schneider is now beginning to put together marketing for the remaining 20 acres of the site which has yet to be developed.

Why??

^Oh, I don't know.  Their track record of comments regarding the City of Cleveland, possibly.  I won't write anything else, because I don't want to turn this into a Forest City bash.

Oldman,

did Mitchell talk about his White Motors site at all?

Too bad he can't put this knowledge and energy into a development that is gain to the urban fabric of this city.

Specialty Retailer To Soon Open At Tower City

CLEVELAND -- One of the east coast's premier specialty retailers of urban-inspired apparel is coming to Tower City.

VILLA, a leader in community revitalization and urban business development, will open a store at Tower City on Nov. 13.

Opening events include a lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 13. There will also be a sneaker giveaway.

http://www.newsnet5.com/money/21496458/detail.html

Is this a store that sells more criminally inspired, oh, excuse me...Uhhh hummm.. "Urban Inspired" clothing, like crap catchers?

Ahhh.. Yes, that's exactly what it is... Just looked at the website.

Here is their "news"

God..if this is the best TC can do, I feel sorry for them.

Why so negative??

I personally wouldn't shop there but they also do stuff for their community at least.

VILLA supports programs that create access to information and

technology and increase enrollment in 2-4 year colleges and universities. VILLA has partnered with schools, local governments and neighborhood groups to improve the community through community service, educational initiatives and economic investment.

VILLA hires young men and women directly from the neighborhoods of its stores. The store managers and sales experts are not only trained to be excellent managers but also to be community leaders within these neighborhoods.

This fall, VILLA donated over 1,000 VILLA School Packs to students in our communities. Students in Cleveland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia, Pa. received VILLA School Packs

They also do community clean ups and development and a bunch of other things.

Are they perfect or a great store probably not but at least they have positive outlooks on their community and while we might hate it, it targets a lot of the people who currently visit Tower City.

EC-I generally enjoy your posts and appreciate the passion that you demonstrate about the city, but judging from this post and some of your pasts contributions, you need to mix in some sensitivity training when it comes to 'community issues'. It's not helping...
