Soft Surroundings will be opening their first Ohio location at Crocker Park this coming May

Great news! I'm glad to see they're getting another big draw there, they need it

Finally just maybe finally we will see the influence of the Easton People, this is huge get!!!

^it would be a HUGER "get" if it was downtown at Nucleus.

Meijers superstore headed to Avon

^is that like a Walmart?

Better than a walmart

More like a super kmart.  But yes, not much different the a super Walmart.  Years ago, when Meijers for big, it really didn't have that much competition, and people thought they were great.  Now, it's just like many jug box retailers with grocery.

I welcome any competition for the worst grocery store in the country, Giant Turkey.    I hope Meijers moves east....

Apologies if this has already been reported, but Office Max in Golden Gate is closing. 30 percent off all goods currently.

That is the very first Office Max I believe.

That is the very first Office Max I believe.

It was indeed.

I always used to do my school supplies shopping there, so it's sad news for me on a personal level too.

I wonder if the OfficeMax departure at Golden Gate is part of the new  owner's plan to re-tenant the plaza. The Golf Galaxy next door has already left. That side has quite a few vacancies now and it seems like it could be a part of a redevelopment.

In other news, University Square is going to get even emptier in the next year. TJ Maxx and Famous Footwear are planning a move  to Oakwood Commons. That will leave Applebee's as the only renting tenant as Macy's and Target own their buildings.

The absentee land speculator/owner has only accelerated the decline at University. At this point, I'm not sure there's any way to save that complex especially since Target has been looking to move for a couple years now. If they stay, it's likely because they couldn't find a suitable location elsewhere in the Beachwood/Shaker area.

At Goldengate that restaurant that used to be a Mexican restaurant and then before that a Buca di Beppo is going to soon become a winking lizard so you could be right about total redevelopment on that side, he even mentioned a grocer I wonder if a new one like fresh thyme market that his been moving into Ohio would put their first NE. Ohio location there I was at the one in Columbus two weeks ago and it's a nice market

More poaching by Oakwood Commons. What an absolute waste of land and the folks behind that development are proven again to be liars. Another example of why we need regional planning, particularly in regards to retail development in the eastern suburbs.

The Winking Lizard move fell through.  The owner at the last minute decided to put in another outlot building which would take away almost all the Lizard's parking.

^ Whoa!  Do you know if the move from Coventry is still on?

Well that was stupid of the owner to do

Not at the moment.  My guess is they will want to get out of there if something else comes up, but I don't know that.

Well that was kind of dumb, since there are already vacancies in the center.  Unless they have something big in the works.

Shame, I always thought of University Square as a nice, unique building. It was basically a shopping center but creatively hid the parking while still be accessible to stores. Sad to see it struggle, I always thought it would be a great idea to have something like that within the city limits especially with rail connected to it.

It'd be a great idea if executed better. The confusing ramps to get to the higher stores, the low clearance heights of the garage, poor directional signage, lack of street connectivity for the ground floor stores, as well as poor construction/engineering of the garage have all been a drag on the center.

I could see the retail spaces modified into residential though.

I detest Oakwood as much as anyone but these tenants would've left regardless. They've been wanting out for years just like Target does. As long as that parking deck looms over US, nobody will want to be in there. Too much liability. There's a reason everyone else fled from there and they couldn't even get a legitimate shopping center owner in there. Instead, the owner is a land squatter who's best known for owning liquor stores and the notorious Packard plant in Detroit. Do you think national chains want anything to do with a property owner like that? Since it's going into foreclosure again, we'll see if someone more professional bites but I don't see it. You'd have to tear down the deck and rebuild it to gain people's confidence back. The whole thing is a disaster and I don't blame any retailer for getting out if they can.

The other thing about Oakwood is that TJ Maxx and Famous Footwear were not supposed to go there. First Interstate wanted to lure a Lowe's, Kohl's or JCPenney to that end of the center but they couldn't seal the deal. It was either make a deal with TJ Maxx and add a strip of small stores or let the site languish for many more years. They chose the easiest route and allowed TJ Maxx to get out from the albatross that is University Square.

It's a gem compared to Dadeland Station. I avoid this place like the plague.

Here is a picture of Timofey Mozgov in a Heinens.  Man, I love seeing our players off the court and actually in Clevelandy Cleveland places.  I recently saw pictures of JR Smith in the Quaker Steak and Lube in Valley View.

Is this the Pepper Pike or Rocky River Heinen's?

SixthCity[/member] Is it just me or does his hat say "F*ck"?

When I went to the downtown Heinen's for the first time I saw Brandon Heyward (backup Cavs center) in there.  I am assuming he lives in the 9.

tradition7[/member] Hahah yeah, his hat does indeed say "F*ck."  As for Brandon Heyward, that would make sense because I'm pretty sure he was getting his haircut at Blondies yesterday as I worked out in Titans.  You can see into the other establishment's glass from either side.  A couple weeks ago I sat next to Josh Gordon there as we both got our haircut.  I'm basically a superstar now.

*Note: Blondies is the barbershop in the 668 building.

Dudes... It's Brendan Haywood. If you're going to be hob-nobbing with sports stars, make sure you call 'em by their names!! ;)

That hat.... Not too classy. Apparently he wears that hat a lot. It says "F--- the cold"

And just like that, the hat becomes acceptable ha ha.

Exactly who is going to tell him he can't wear it?

thats true, but still its good to finally have meijers. for competition at least. speaking of retail coming from west of cle, i wish some local developer would coax toledo's the andersons to put a store in the area as well. i always loved those:

As Heinen's becomes part of downtown, other cities crave such fare

Blog Entry: April 06, 2015 10:04 AM    |    Author: STAN BULLARD

There are many ways to appreciate the new Heinen’s supermarket in downtown Cleveland.

If you use the 1010 Euclid Ave. door, sniff the air. Smell the fresh fruits and vegetables. The West Side Market comes to mind. But since Heinen’s opened in February at The 9, the mixed use project of Geis Cos., the pleasant smells at East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue are a new part of the downtown experience.

There’s also tossing down a turkey and avocado wrap at a table on an inlaid marble floor. Eating lunch underneath a Tiffany-glass-topped rotunda is a distinctly different. It rivals dining under the crystal top of another landmark, the Hyatt Regency Cleveland Arcade.

Even people-watching at Heinen’s is a treat. It’s not the crowd of suits who used to haunt downtown’s long departed cafeterias. It’s the dress-down workday world’s upscale crew, but more eclectic, more diverse, even with more than a mom or two and kids.

Another way to appreciate Cleveland’s new store is to consider other second-tier or non-coastal cities pursuing supermarkets.

Chalk one up for Legacy again. They appear to have stolen the Capital Grille from Beachwood Place's expansion into the old Claddaugh's space, it was supposed to be one of the 2 restaurants at beachwood along with sister restaurant seasons 52

Coffee Phix has finally reopened in South Euclid. It's been almost a year and in a new location in the Marc's strip mall on Mayfield. Not quite as charming as the previous location but a quality independent coffee shop.

The community helped a lot too with donations; this business isn't easy

Interesting property play by Alson Jewelers - situated right in front of the new, freestanding, doubled-in-size Trader Joe's at Eton, to build a 5,000 sq ft new-tenant addition to the east of their existing store... Brochure found at this link... but, interestingly, the PDF file name says "former Alson Jewelers" - so wonder if that's just a mistake - or a slip - and something else is going on - with Alison soon being "former"...

http://goodmanrealestate.com/pmoreinfo.aspx?rid=311

It looks like the former is gone now??

Alson link leads directly to brochure download it appears. BTW, from morning commute, this Alson addition appears to totally block the visibility of the new Trader Joe's from Chagrin Blvd...

Now any rumors of what is going there???....also what's up with beachwood place's expansion and will seasons 52 still go to beachwood place with the sister restaurant now going to legacy

Alson addition no idea. Eton existing Trader space more interesting... Urban Outfitters? Right size. Only major Crocker retailer with no east location. Stark ties and successful sister stores Anthro and Free People already there. Frame up on new TJ's store. Land leveled. Some concrete poured. Still 2015/2016 opening for nee Eton.

Beachwood Place... Unclear.. REI was in their plans and now may go to Pinecrest. Other Darden restaurants Bonefish amd Carrabba's bailed from Eton expansion so could end up tsking those spots. Yard House building west and surely looking east. That GGP bought La Place might change food plans. Sushi space and 2-3 restaurants worth of highly visible former Borders space above. Just my take. With no ground brokem likley nothing changing outside in 2015.

Only Beachwood news is Louis Vuitton Saks leased space remodeled/enlarged. Shame it will be new LV store-like but without cache' of freestanding mall store missing from market and obviously not in plans now.

Does LV do that because its cheaper to lease from Saks as opposed GGP directly?

Does LV do that because its cheaper to lease from Saks as opposed GGP directly?

Don't know the economics, but it would seem it works out better for LV to continue operating their CLE "store" within Saks vs in the mall... Saks certainly wouldn't want to lose the draw... But CLE remains the largest  metro without a free-standstanding LV store... and LV has moved from dept store to mall in other instances...

And it is really amazing because that  in the store store looks exactly like a freestanding store

I think I emailed you and you probably know that Tori Burch is opening in Pittsburgh I sure hope they move to Ohio soon and would come to beachwood place
