Have you been in Tower City's bathroom by the food court? It's the second worst bathroom I've ever been in next to one of the bathrooms at the Atlanta airport. It was atrocious and smelled disgusting. Granted, it's now been a few years since I've been in there so the bathroom may have improved. If I have to go whilst I'm in TC, I'll duck into one of the attached restaurant bathrooms.

The food court bathrooms received a BIG renovation and look 100 times better than before. The other bathroom though............

Yep, sorry... I don't recycle either...  That probably kills you...

Not really, no, it just says more about you as a person than I ever could.

^All that other stuff (offices, broad retail selection in strip malls, TJs, etc.) is also in Beachwood (or Woodmere, an adjacent postage stamp-sized jurisdiction), about 2 miles south of the mall, one highway exit away. Others know a lot better than I do, but I think it all essentially operates as one big cluster.

"One big cluster" that is divided amongst at least 3-4 "independent" suburbs that are all racing each other to the bottom and have no intent to work together towards a larger plan. It's truly insane and could have been avoided if the region was sensibly organized ~80 years ago. Or if regional government had ever taken off ~50 years ago. Or even ~20 years ago. Instead we waste valuable land that could be used for parks or practically anything else that ends up being used for unneeded new retail developments. :whip:

Trying to equate University Square's issues with Oakwood's development is silly. I'm pretty sure I reported this months ago but TJ Maxx was going to leave regardless. They had zero intentions of staying once their lease ended. The fact the complex was sold to an absentee land speculator was the last straw for them. The options for TJX were simple. A) Move B) Close. They chose option A which I'm sure their employees are grateful for.

There's a reason JoAnn left way before Oakwood Club was even up for sale. Theres a reason Pier One left before that too. There's a reason Target has been looking to move for about 7 years. There's a reason Famous Footwear left when their lease was up and they are also headed to Oakwood.  There's a reason so many spots were never even filled. There's no need to recite them. Oakwood might've accelerated its decline but the decline was inevitable either way.

I've spend over 15 years in industries affiliated with recycling and cannot stress enough how overrated it is, at the consumer level, from an environmental perspective.

Crocker expansion has two new to region stores, Beauty Brands, which has just opened in Columbus and Carhartt which has a store in Cincy.  Also Texas de Brazil, which will see new one at Eton also, and the Yard House.

Oh boy...Cedar North in 'downtown' South Euclid:

Developer to build new retail, restaurant plaza to replace Marc's strip mall in South Euclid

"In a design similar to Cedar Center North, the grocer will anchor the new retail center at the back of the site, with a parking lot in front and two side buildings, Mayor Georgine Welo said in a press release Thursday."

Hopefully this gives Coffee Phix some more exposure (it recently moved next to the tobacco shop). It's a great place but could really use more business, and the proprietor is literally there ever hour it's open.

The Misses and I bought a kitchen table and chairs there on Saturday. We rode our bikes there as well with our 6 year old. You don't get more urban than that.

  • 2 weeks later...

Signs are up that the Office Max at City View is having a store closing sale. Other than the Giant Eagle (which always seems pretty full when I stop in) this is the last "big box" store of the development.

Is there any hope for this place?  Such a waste

Signs are up that the Office Max at City View is having a store closing sale. Other than the Giant Eagle (which always seems pretty full when I stop in) this is the last "big box" store of the development.

Word is Giant Eagle really locked out a lot of potential tenants.  Even Walmart left (in part) because of the restrictions.  As long as the Pittsburgh store is busy, they don't care.

It also never helped that they never punched through to Rockside and the only access was at the freeway ramps.

I heard Walmarts departure had nothing to do with Giant Eagle or the Meghan gas underneath the site. I heard they simply got a better deal including an opportunity to build a Super store, they're preferred model, over in Bedford so they got out of the lease, picked up and left.

Has anyone ever driven behind those buildings? You can see by the back of the buildings how much the ground has shifted. Yeah, it is just a matter of time before GE closes, too. That whole hillside is slumping in a major way. Highly unstable land there

All hillsides in Greater Cleveland are unstable because of the porous shale below. Develop on top of a hillside? Not wise unless you sink caissons through the shale to bedrock.

Put a landfill on the edge of a hillside? Stupid, unless it's a narrow ravine. Develop on top of a landfill on top of a hillside in Greater Cleveland? So stupid that it begs to ask how many people got paid off to look the other way and why aren't the participants in jail?

I know something is wrong with a retail development in Cleveland when I have never set foot on the property!  And now that it's just a Giant Eagle, I never will (hate them with a passion).

The Vista Way shopping strip along the freeway ramp there (with Starbucks, Chipotle, Steak n Shake, Applebees etc) always is busy and seams to be hanging on pretty well considering.

I wonder when something will happen with the land north of the freeway there. Obviously the plans for the shopping center have died, and nothing has come of the plans for the outlet mall. That site never was a landfill right? I'm sure they wouldn't have built the original residential neighborhood on one...

I ran across a Bob Stark comment from this Summer in which he notes that the Eton Trader Joe's is the "most successful suburban store" in the country from that chain (if so, that's really saying something). Also, a spread in the new Cleveland Magazine confirmed that 3 retailers are signed to split up the Eton Trader Joe's 9,700 foot space when it moves to the new 14,000ish square foot store in the coming months.

That is only the beginning of the reshuffling there as it looks like one of the larger restaurants (think chain/local ownership) will likely be moving over to PineCrest while they work on putting one of their newer, more casual concepts in the Eton space.

I heard Walmarts departure had nothing to do with Giant Eagle or the Meghan gas underneath the site. I heard they simply got a better deal including an opportunity to build a Super store, they're preferred model, over in Bedford so they got out of the lease, picked up and left.

I heard from people with political pull in Maple that they couldn't put in a refrigerated/frozen food section, because of the codicils, and that was the last straw.

that's always a problem with codicils. They spoil pretty fast even when frozen.

At Beachwood today love it or hate it Zara opening upper Saks wing 2016

^ Ha! Me and my boyfriend were just there on Saturday and saw that area walled off with no signs or anything. He said "It'd be nice if Zara would open there".

About time the mall got a Spanish Banana Republic

So that would seem to indicate that Paladar will exit and will turn into the more casual Bomba, as recently opened in Rocky River.

God I hope not. Is that rumor or conjecture?

Have had many a fun Friday night in Paladar/Europa/Cerviche

Also noted at Beachwood the previously mentioned Tommy Bahama opening in the fall. Lush had moved over to their new store space next to Teavana, Over at the Saks exit by the Pub was closed and a message said please pardon while we update to make new improvements. Didn't get elsewhere in the mall to see if anything else new was going on.

Saks exit closed due to stolen truck crashing through to steal purses. Pardon our dust = unintended dsut.

Will the Zara be the first one in Ohio,  i'm actually surprised there's not more buzz about Zara, I couldn't find news in the paper anywhere about Zara opening at Beachwood, it is kind of big news to those who are fans of Zara.

Zara is a real "get" for Beachwood Place, as it still is relatively rare in the US.  As for any buzz, the Saks adjacent space in question was being prepped the last few weeks and was signless as recently as thr weekend, so sign literally could have gone up today. Could Zara have an outside entrance as part of the BP expansion right through its back wall? Perhaps.

^Thanks for bringing this discussion back to 'Cleveland' retail news. There should be a separate thread for the burbs.

We have too many separate threads in my opinion (e.g. do we really need separate restaurant news and review threads?  They tend to overlap anyway).  Just call this Greater Cleveland Retail News and be done with it.

^Yea, there is absolutely no need for a suburban retail thread and a Cleveland proper retail thread. This is just a message board, but thinking like that is part of the reason the region is so divided.

Yep that's why the region is so divided as you suggest because I want a separate thread for Cleveland Retail...lol as the kids say

It'll be the only Zara between Philly and Chicago in the Northeast/Great Lakes I believe. Zara is extremely choosey about opening stores in the US due to the fact that they don't cater to larger people and openly say so, so it is kind of a big win for the region. Maybe TopShop does surprisingly well at Beachwood and they are following?

Ran across this in the comments section of cle.com - remember this eyehrt?- eyehrtfood2  Mar 21, 2014

"Believe it or not Dieselbuck, I keep a spreadsheet on this... Here is a list of 26 upscale and/or trendy retail and restaurants chains that are in many cities our size (these are not pie in the sky retailers...). NEO is the 16th largest population market in the country (Columbus is 30th, if you're curious...).. The 19 other markets in the top 20 have an average 21 of these 26 chains. NEO has none. Columbus has 14. Pittsburgh (23rd population) has 20, Indy (29th population) has 14 as a comparison.

The 26 (two of which may be part of the announced Beachwood Place lineup - but we'll see... ) are noted below. Many of these are in all but a few of the top 20 - or even top 25 markets - basically except for CLE - so there is a market for them:

American Girl, Armani Exchange (in 19 of top 20 markets), BJ’s Brewhouse, Bass Pro or Cabela’s (in 18 of top 20), Burberry (in 18 of top 20), C Wonder, Capital Grille, Club Monaco, Cole Haan, Contaner Store (in 18 of top 20), IKEA (in 18 of top 20 markets), Juicy Couture, Louis Vuitton (stand alone store), Love Culture, Lovesac, Lucy, Oakley, Neiman-Marcus (in 19 of top 20), Puma (18 of top 20), REI (in 18 of top 20), Ruth’s Chris, Seasons 52, Tommy Bahama, Tory Burch, Vineyard Vines, West Elm (17 of top 20)...

This doesn't include stores that don't have quite the penetration - like Von Maur or Cooper's Hawk or Kona Grill or others that are desirable and in many markets - but not the majority of top 20."

We're starting to make some retail strides.

Totally unnecessary to have a Cleveland retail thread and a burbs retail thread. About Zara, I am not a fan, but my wife likes it, so I'm often tagging along to Zara at the Grove. Good to hear Cleveland is getting one, as it diversifies the shopping landscape.

Also from the above list we could bold Cabelas going to Avon and Bass Pro going into northern Summit County in Boston Heights. Also I believe all c wonder stores have closed, and hasn't Juicy Couture all also closed?? In BJ's brewhouse is finally getting into Northeast Ohio entering the North Canton and Fairlawn markets for now.

Odd considering that Cleveland is often rated one of the fattest cities in the country. One can only imagine what the means for the sedentary exurban residents that will travel the freeway to frequent this place.

It's not silly at all. Yes University Square has had problems, but it's still more than serviceable. However when you give stores unnecessary extra options, of course they're going to go running for the perceived greener grass. Considering what is located at Oakwood, it's nothing but a duplication of what we already had around here, the difference is now we have less green space than before. A net loss all around.

Someone from beachwood place said that Zara is set to open in late fall of 2016 in response to a question I posted to them on their Facebook site. I wonder if this is in line with the expansion finally moving forward.

Yes. Mall expansion is 15+ months = late Fall 2016. If Zara coming I bet other meaningful retailers have signed on to renenergize the Saks wing. Also, Pinecrest now confirmed as Spring 2017 opening, not next Fall.

I've seen those reports too, but I always have a hard time believing them. I've lived around the US and also travel a fair bit for work and pleasure. Cleveland never stands out for me in this respect. I was in Texas earlier this week and you can see how big the people are the moment you step out of the airport.

My hovercraft is full of eels

Odddom considering that Cleveland is often rated one of the fattest cities in the country. One can only imagine what the means for the sedentary exurban residents that will travel the freeway to frequent this place.

Just so I'm clear, it's OK to fat-shame on this board? But if I, say, thug-shamed I'd feel the heat from many posters...

Any other updates on Pinecrest other than the spring of 2017 I hadn't seen this latest update on Pinecrest is this on the website?? If so I think I lost their link
