November 6, 20159 yr The more I think about it, the less I think all those store names listed on the "available" are actually planned on being poached. Athleta for example just opened the Beachwood store what, last year? Instead I think they're listed to be more as an idea for what they would like there and what they're going after. For example, the space listed for Chelsea Collective in the earlier leasing map has changed to say Beauty Brands in this more recent one, and the location where Urban Toddler is now listed as LOI was originally listed as Swoozies. BTW, the architectural style of this center is beginning to grow on me. I like the modern look much better than the faux wonderland in Legacy or the faux main street in Crocker.
November 6, 20159 yr ^Due to my urban predilections, none of these suburban lifestyle centers really does much for me, but I completely agree with your last sentence. The architecture of Legacy and Eton burns my eyes. Pinecrest is a little less noxious in that regard. [Typos]
November 7, 20159 yr Yes I don't Think they will all come to fruition for instance the space listed as Athleta as you say maybe they are looking or will be at Lucy??
November 12, 20159 yr Interesting post from the Instagram account cle_news... Not sure how true it is but a hardware store and a "large retailer" coming soon plus NuCLEus breaking ground between January and March? Hmmm
November 12, 20159 yr I'm hoping 'large retailer' means a TargetExpress or something similar. That would really seal the deal downtown in my mind...and selfishly it would make my life so much easier :) The only times I need to venture outside of downtown are if I head to Walmart in Steelyard for some miscellaneous item or I'm clothes shopping. Hope springs eternal...
November 12, 20159 yr OMG a Target Express would be amazing! And I hope the Nucleus rumors are true! Though there are a lot of good signs regarding the Nucleus project, I'm going to always be skeptical until I see construction.

Ironically, Tower City used to be where I did my clothes shopping, Structure, Warner Brothers, Browns store, etc...
November 12, 20159 yr Have to wonder what "large retailer" means. Doesn't mean that the store will be large, does it? It could just mean that it's a large national chain opening a small store! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 12, 20159 yr ^ yeah this is true. Either way, a large national chain would be important (just not my wish ;) ). They say it usually takes one before the rest typically fall in line right?
November 13, 20159 yr Or to complete my dreams, maybe it'll be Cleveland's first stand alone Burberry! :-D Or more realistically, I'd like to see a City Target, possibly in Nucleus (Though that wouldn't fit in with that 12 month timeline).
November 13, 20159 yr Geigers will be a huge test on the downtown retail market. I think the location is perfect, being right next door to a, what seems to be, well shopped Heinens store. If it were put in the WHD, I think it may actually fail. If it does succeed, which I really hope it does, I think that stretch of Euclid becomes the retail corridor for the city that national chains look at. Not so much lower prospect, NuCLEus area. And that makes sense being between CSU and the 9,Huntington, and all the other large conversion projects. I think the restaurant scene will continue to succeed from E4th down through NuCLEus.
November 13, 20159 yr I stopped in Geigers today - great looking space and good variety as far as style and price. I'm not the target market for their more outdoorsy/Patagonia goods but they had some cool sweaters, t-shirts from GV, and accessories that I plan to buy on my next visit. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
November 13, 20159 yr Speaking of Wallyworld, I'm told that the Bedford store, considered second only to Steelyard as a disaster, has a new manager who comes from the well run (by most accounts) Sandusky store.
November 14, 20159 yr Was down in Steelyard Commons today. There are signs up in the vacant storefront next to Home Depot (not sure what was there before) for a Party City opening soon.
November 14, 20159 yr Was down in Steelyard Commons today. There are signs up in the vacant storefront next to Home Depot (not sure what was there before) for a Party City opening soon. Probably where the Staples was before.
November 15, 20159 yr When I look at the Steelyard Commons, I get a feeling of a severance town center part two. Not due to literal design but due to the fact that they contain(ed) virtually the same stores outside of Target and a few miscellaneous ones (Phase One). Not really a bad thing just a random observation.

Not due to literal design but due to the fact that they contain(ed) virtually the same stores outside of Target and a few miscellaneous ones (Phase One). Not really a bad thing just a random observation. It's a retail mix they know, and some retailers won't go into a development unless X, Y & Z are there. So they probably just borrowed on a mix that worked elsewhere. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 18, 20159 yr More locally based retail, the type that truly make a city unique is coming to Downtown with the opening of CLEpets www.clepets.com at the 5th Street Arcade. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/clepets102715.aspx http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cleveland/2015/11/16/pet-store-downtown-cleveland/75898454/
November 20, 20159 yr Was told by one of the Geigers staff that they are trying to persuade "another Lakewood retailer" to take the spot next door. They sell "things for the home". My hovercraft is full of eels

November 24, 20159 yr Glut of obsolete retail space forces mall owners to re-imagine properties November 24, 2015 SCOTT SUTTELL MANAGING EDITOR “The country is just littered” with obsolete retail space. So says developer Stuart Lichter in this Wall Street Journal story about the need to re-imagine shopping center space, which mentions Randall Park Mall in North Randall. The paper says a “toxic brew of overbuilding, the rise of e-commerce and a wave of retailer bankruptcies” have forced landlords to find new-uses for once-lucrative properties. “Some owners are converting struggling malls into apartments, offices and industrial space, while others are turning big chunks of retail space into parks and playgrounds to keep shoppers interested,” The Journal reports. January 6, 20169 yr Not Cleveland but nearby.... Crain's is reporting that Macy's will close its stores at Chapel Hill (Cuyahoga Falls) and Midway malls (Elyria). The Cincinnati-based department store chain is shuttering 36 stores this spring in the wake of what the company characterized as 'disappointing 2015 sales and earnings performance.' January 6, 20169 yr I'm not very surprised at either of those locations closing. If I had to guess which in NE Ohio would get it, it would have been those.

A friend of mine owned Football Town Again during the hiatus. Don't recall Structure carrying cardigan, but the last time I wore striped pants of any kind (other than pins on a suit maybe) would have been a football uniform, and that was about forever ago. Sorry to disappoint. :)
January 15, 20169 yr In this "advertorial" piece written by real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield/Cresco, it briefly mentions.... http://blog.cleveland.com/cresco_commercial_real_estate/2016/01/after_a_strong_year_of_develop.html The city's appeal has increased with the addition of stores like Geiger's and Metro Home. Look for growth to continue in that market throughout the coming year and beyond. "Typically, you'll see boutique and independents come first, and the next wave in 2016 will be the national apparel stores," Pietro says. At least five national stores are considering opening locations downtown. "If that happens, it will show that even the national retailers are willing to jump in with both feet," he says. Hmmm.... January 15, 20169 yr ^^ Awesome if it comes though. Burberry Burberry Burberry! Haha ^ And not really surprising. I've never set foot in that store (or any Walmart in the last 8 years or so), but I always hear it was by far the worst in the area. It hasn't been around for very long though has it?

It has only been around a few years, and it's by most accounts the second worst in the area. It had new management that was cleaning house, but now it looks like his job may have been to get rid of as many people as possible with six months or more that would have otherwise been eligible for WARN. Steelyard may actually be the worst in America. Their Yelp reviews have become notorious.

Interesting that the Eagle had a store so small even Heinens will be condensed some. In this area they are to grocery shopping what Hebrew National is to hot dogs and lunch meat: further ahead of second place than second is ahead of the average.
January 21, 20169 yr Whenever a Giant Eagle closes somewhere, the angels rejoice! Let us not weep for an unemployed self-checkout computer, for they shall find a home in another location, to further back up the lines of angry customers!
January 21, 20169 yr Heinen's Chagrin Falla space, finally made possible by a parking arrangement in the busy downtown plaza, is about the size of Heinen's fantastic Hudson Village Market store (which is the best grocery store to shop that there is). It's also a 1 minute drive or 5 minute walk from my house, so could not be more thrilled... It should do tremendous business, but two other Heinen's stores are within 7-10 minutes... so some cannibalization will occur. With new Trader Joe's, coming-soon new Whole Foods and newish Market District (yuck) all within 10-15 minutes, it is nice to have the choices.

February 2, 20169 yr Over at legacy village the girls clothing store by White House black market, Justice is now closed I noticed. Considering there is a Justice store at Beachwood Place too - having two so close together having something to do with a merger a few years ago (w/Limited Too?) - that's been a long time coming...
February 2, 20169 yr Also received my eton February newsletter and once again it said this fall Eileen Fisher, Paper Source, and Lucky Brand Jeans opening in the fall. ....presumably in the outgoing Trader Joe's space. Lucky was pushed out at Beachwood Place last year to make room for Zara. As an aside, the new West End development at Eton, including Chipotle, Starbucks and Texas de Brazil has the tightest (to turn in/out of) and most poorly planned parking lot I can remember. They will have to soon make changes due to backups or certain accidents that will occur due to tight quarters in and out and placement of Starbucks drive through exit right at only exit to entire plaza.. Miserable planning. I can't imagine what they were thinking. Better to park fully behind buildings near new Trader Joe's.
February 5, 20169 yr The new, larger, freestanding Trader Joe's at Eton is opening today at 8:00. In turn, perhaps the biggest reason for the pain many feel when parking near the main part of the Eton retail strip will be gone... (and parking issues relocated maybe 600-700 feet to the west).
February 6, 20169 yr Heinen's catering to downtown markets Early success of East 9th Street store has added to amenities city has to offer, visitors say February 06, 2016 UPDATED 18 HOURS AGO By DOUGLAS J. GUTH It has been almost a year since Heinen’s opened its downtown supermarket in the historic Cleveland Trust Building. Tom Heinen, who owns the grocery chain along with his twin brother, Jeff, is happy with the impact his new store has had on both Cleveland’s image as well as the company’s bottom line, even if there’s still room for improvement. “It’s doing better than my worst fear and not as great as my greatest hope,” said Heinen, somewhat tongue-in-cheek. The 27,000-square-foot store on the corner of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue, which welcomed its first shoppers on Feb. 25, 2015, is performing as projected in a downtown continuing to cultivate its residential base, Heinen said. February 14, 20169 yr At Beachwood Place today, it appears the new Zara will take up just about the whole second floor of the Sak's wing, from Athleta on down. Same space wise on the lower level, except for the space right next to Sak's, which will stay as Sage eyebrow threading (Boo!), which is being remodeled. the rumor among mall employees is that there will be a "sporting goods store" as part of the outside expansion, as well as Mitchell's ice cream moving from La Place. Mitchell's is advertised on the Zara construction wall. Also MAC will be opening a store in the central lower level next to the Art of Shaving.
February 15, 20169 yr Is there a plan on the expansion? I was inside Beechwood Place last year and was kind of disappointed with the selection - there were many holes in the storefronts that could have been filled. With Legacy Place expanding and Eton adding ultra-luxury options - and now Orange's "Easton Towne Centre" coming up - I wonder how the mall will fare.
February 15, 20169 yr Commenting on Heinens downtown location above. If I was from Cleveland, I would never even know there was a grocery store in there if walking or driving past. In other cities, urban groceries like Heinens tend to have lots of windows at the sidewalk where you can see all the salads, olives, wines, cheeses etc. this building, being a former bank, obviously has, imho, a terrible street presence. They even still have bars on the few windows there are. I shouldnt complain, because this is an awesome addition to the city, just wish it "lit up the corner" and had a better street presence.
