Geiger's now has a permanent sign at their downtown location. Went up today

Nice! I wonder how they've been doing. It's a great location and I bet they'll do well this summer but unfortunately for the moment they're right next to and across from some of the last vacant buildings downtown.

We took our kids up to our favorite toy store on Shaker Square this morning only to find out they just closed a couple days ago after being open over 20 years.

I worry about Shaker Square with The Coral Company at the helm.  It looks like the first commenter on the Cleveland.com article feels the same way.

I believe you have good reason to worry about the Coral Co. Under their "Coral" name on their web site they say they are "building the city", but in reality they are not IMO. Of the three shopping centers that I have been too, shopped at, and know about in the city of Cleveland, and Lakewood,  Brooklyn Center, Shaker Square, and Lakewood Town Center, two are no longer under their control, and the other has far too many empty store fronts.

Brooklyn Center went into default about a year ago, and the Coral Co let the bank take it back over. It was not kept up well when Coral had it, and the neighborhood had many issues with Coral concerning the shopping center.

Lakewood Town Center was recently sold off by Coral, but even when Coral owned it, it was not kept up, lots of garbage around the parking lot, trash bins not regularly emptied, etc...

And lastly, Shaker Square, it has too many empty store fronts, is not kept up as should be, and is another one of Corals properties which lacks cleanliness.

Now check out Cedar Center North and tell me how well The Coral Company delivers.  What an awful company.

And, yes, I know these were the old plans before the banking crisis.  But it's been like 9 years since they scrapped them and scaled it back to a junky strip plaza.  It's either dishonest or the sign of a crappy company that they still have that up on their website.

Same goes for Intesa, where they still have the original (much grander) plans posted (which they have since abandoned).  I'm still skeptical that Intesa happens at all as long as they are responsible.  I actually hope it doesn't, so a more competent development company can step in and put something in more deserving of the site location.

Same goes for Shaker Square...  They took a nicely redone historic shopping district and do the bare minimum when it comes to maintenance.

The nice plantings that were done by the previous owner have now been taken over by weeds and saplings that are sheared as if they are meant to be there.

They have a couple of hillbillies in a beat up pickup truck that have no idea what they are doing maintaining this stuff.  If it weren't for the volunteers that come in and try to weed it would be much worse.

Yes definitely agree...  What an awful company

It doesn't help that the developments around Shaker are happening at a glacier pace. You can't have a revitalized Shaker without stabilizing everything around it. At least those abandoned buildings on E130 are coming down, but it's frustrating to have to pick up wrappers, bottles and debris from the front of my building every day. It's managed by Howard Hanna who doesn't seem to give too much of a sh** about appearances.

Whoever maintains Shaker Square Apartments (the ones with the banners in front) does a fantastic job of maintenance - with nice LED lighting, nice grass and landscaping... and someone that does pick up trash.

Something I saw that I found interesting:  the Walton Hills senior center had a bus trip to downtown Heinen’s today.  Walton Hills is one of the original sprawlburbs and has a median age of 48 (Cleveland’s is 36).

A lot of elderly people I know want to see it, actually. Like, lots and lots of people's parents that I'm friends with. But are very intimidated about coming downtown alone, where they would park, safety concerns (real or imagined). I am taking my boyfriend's Mom and Aunt some time this summer.

old ppl looovvve their heinen's. that never changes.

I saw metro home furniture in Mentor is going out of business aren't they the ones that just opened up a furniture store downtown???

^I thought so, based on an old article, and maybe they are, but FWIW, the company web site only lists the downtown and a Parma location: http://www.metrohomeohio.com/contact/

So maybe just the Mentor store closed?

Just saw a TV commercial where they said they lost their lease in Mentor (although I should use all caps to match the style of the commercial)

I was glad to report a street corner florist going in on Superior. Angies Floral Shop. My first thought was wow, what a great location! Second thought was umm, I think this store may be a movie prop.

Ah, maybe that explains the faux storefront going into the Lincoln building as well.  F&F 8.

Yep, I spoke with a crew this morning, there's several of them being built, also one on the Southeast corner of 5th/3rd (6th and Superior Ave). (mods move to the film thread if you prefer)

So Hollywood has a better retail sense of downtown Cleveland than local retailers do...

Some may remember the fake storefronts and subway station facade put up on E 9th between Prospect and Euclid for The Avengers filming, due to a mostly vacant block... How things have changed in a few years... Maybe these faux storefronts will be real stores in a few years, too.

Does anyone know how Geigers is performing?

I hope these people are able to keep Mitchell's Fine Candies open.  It is a great place and a wonderful asset to the neighborhood.  Unfortunately, they have a ways to go and only a few days left.

Yeah I heard about them.  I talked to the owner of Mitchells a bunch to see what it would take.  I'm not really sure that I even understand the Kickstarter campaign as this is really about dedicating your days to long hours and little pay, a total dedication to the business as there have been others that had the funds, but didn't understand the dedication part.

Either they either have what it takes or they don't.  Mr. Mitchell is willing to stay on to guide them through.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, especially since I heard he would stay on and work for them for a while after transferring ownership.  In the write-up on the Kickstarter site it says it's for expenses related to getting the business up and running again since he has been winding it down in preparation of it possibly closing, and that the figure of $60k comes from Bill himself.

Uh... Somehow they hit their goal. Guessing they covered it so they wouldn't lose the contributions people made?

I totally want to keep this business open, but in general I'm not sure how I feel about kick starters to fund businesses. If it was worth investing in you shouldn't need the money and if you don't have the money maybe you shouldn't get into the business. Of course people get rewards, but it would be different if people got ownership in the business. I don't know, it's kind of free money and I don't know that I like people asking for that.

Yeah, I agree.  They should have found an investor who would get a cut of profits if they didn't have the money.  But I'm glad it will stay open and wish then success.

It was at $19k earlier today, so they likely did just cover it, but it's strange that they didn't wait until Monday.

Alter'd State will be coming soon to Beachwood Place.

^ That reminds me, was there the other day and saw signs up for Alex and Ani opening soon too.

Also, snapped this pic of the outside expansion well underway, sorry, its a pretty bad angle

Also at beachwood place it's looks like fransesca's is relocating from legacy next to Sephora and the soon to be Alex and Ani. MAC also open in old origins store and Ann Taylor opening too on lower level next to banana republic and Alter'd state right next to that by Victoria's Secret. Also the flip-flop shops closed. On the upper level at Dillards there's a new PacSun. And the Crabtree and Evelyn closed

The Flip Flop Shop was one of the most ridiculous stores to open there. Good riddance.

Adjacent to Beachwood Place, GGP has begun demolition at La Place, in the old Borders upper floor space... Beachwood records indicate a 25,000 sf tenant on second floor.... Container Store? Two story Restoration Gallery (taking Sushi Rock space, too, which recently had auction to gut it)?  At least two additional tenants appear to be moving out of their lower-level spaces to make room for development

Also, Capital Grille finally opened Tuesday 7/5 at Legacy. Beautiful inside. Booked solid last Sat night when there for dinner and nicely attended for several lunches I've had. Nice place. Tasty food .

Sorry you felt that way about the flip-flop shop it was actually one of my favorite stores I got many pairs of different sandals and flip-flops there not to mention different boots and dress boots for the winter.

Even though GGP still owns beachwood place the manager at kate spade told me the mall has new management and that legacy was able to scoop the capital Grille from beachwood place because of their delays  of the old management

Also Texas de Brazil is open over at Eaton, The sign is already up at lucky  brand jeans that store looks like it's coming along nicely along with the paper source on the other side it looks like the one that's taking a little longer in the middle is the Eileen Fisher store.

Just so I understood your post a restoration gallery is going where the old sushi rock was and that possibly the container store in the old orders bookstore??

I do not have anything confirmed on Container Store or Restoration, bit not many stores of the type mall is seeking are of the size in question. However, all signs say Container not going to Pinecrest. And I know two story Restoration Gallery (up to 50K sf) was on original Beachwood Place expansion plan and then on Pinecrest plan. Plus Coastal Taco was ready to build at La Place and then they said GGP was going a different direction than a Coastal (or any restaurant?) at La Place. GGP sought approval for a 25,000 sf 25+ ft high Borders/adjacent space. Plus, no restaurant planned for Beachwood expansion now (but maybe at La Place).

One scenario: Container builds external store as part of Beachwood Place west side  expansion (to go with Zara external entrance and potentially Forever 21 expansion plus maybe 1-2 more). Restoration builds two story Gallery store in Sushi/New Balance/Massage spacee down and Borders up.  Second scenario: Some combination of abovee or ??

Crocker Park: Noodlecat "Coming soon" sign up in empty space on side of Nordstrom Rack building, opposite Texas de  Brazil. Seems a little commercial for Sawyer - but wonder if we will see an east side version soon, too. Maybe at new Shaker development?

Continuing from above: A re-review of La Place/Beachwood zoming plans show a 25K sf tenant on top floor and 3 restaurants totalling 8800 sf on bottom. Tweets say Ho Wah restaurant closed 3 months due to La Place remodel. Beachwood arch board meeting this week - may reveal 25K sf tenant.

I could see a Noodlecat in the food hall.  Sawyers place at Van Aken is supposed to be a new concept, but since he has control over the food options its totally possible he could do a Noodlecat as well.

Sawyer also mentioned a dearth of bagel places on the east side, which makes me wonder if he will coax Jeremy Umansky (used to work for Sawyer at Trentina) into opening his Jewish deli at Van Aken.

This would be the "Schmaltz Delicatessen and Bakery" that Umansky announced he would be opening somewhere in the Hts area.

I'd welcome those Van Aken choices!

Also, Noodlecat got a liquor license for an address that matches that of the CLE airport a few months back, but have seen nothing announced or visible at the airport.

There's one bagel place on the east side, and if you know about it, then you know that there isn't a need for any others. ;)

Bialy's right?

Damn straight

When you drive-by the front of Laplace On cedar you can now see the fencing up to keep people out of the area where they are going to start working by the old sushi rock and new balance stores
