GGP's almost total silence in 2016 on actual plans and tenants for Beachwood Place expansion and LaPlace renovation - a good portion of which will open in the next 3-4 months, though unannounce details, to date - certainly goes against the grain for things like this, often announced long in advance to get consumers pumped. Could be totally due to competition/not tipping hand.

At this point it would seem almost certain the BPlace expansion  will stretch into 2017 as only about 20℅ is even started/dug so fafarr (presumably the Zara external entrance by Saks).

After the closures of the Macy's at Richmond and Chapel Hill in the last year or so, I don't really see any here that look overtly on the chopping block. That large of a percent closing though I would think at least one in NEO will go though. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the two in Youngstown, or one of the two on the west side - simply due to overlapping service areas.

I keep thinking that, but the University Heights store is certainly an underperformer and never busy.  Of course it is very poorly run and almost always a mess......  Frankly I was surprised when the UH one made it through the last round.

But I agree, with the closing of Richmond in the last round, that doesn't leave many others for the east side service area and would think UH would need to remain.  I  haven't noticed if the University Hts one has been any busier since the Richmond closing.

I would think that with all the money on the east side, Macy's would want to keep a presence over there. Also it is still a fairly new building, even if it replaced a store that's been there awhile. I'm honestly not too familiar with the UH store since I no longer live over there, and only rarely shopped there to begin with, but I know a at least a couple of ladies at work that shop there now after Richmond closed.

The UH store is in a white elephant of a development (that I can't imagine draws enough customers)  and you have to think this store is on the bubble. However, it would seem unlikely that Macy's would dump a newish east side store and build another at a more desirable nearby location like Beachwood (doubt they'd get approval).. They may just pull out entirely from the east side...

While I don't see it likely, I could see them moving to anchor Pinecrest. Although I'm not sure how that would effect their quota/requirement for retail new to the area. Losing Macy's would be terrible for University Square, and Cedar Center in general, especially when someone is finally looking at redevelopment. Also a non-mall Macy's isn't unheard of, even around here. The one in Stow has been there for quite awhile.

^Or....how about the May Company Building?!? Its less crazy than it may seem---especially if there's high end retail at Tower City (from the Tower City thread) and at Nucleus. Downtown could again be a major center of shopping (I didn't want to say 'shopping center!').

Stow Macy's was first store I thought of on *closing* list. We'll see.

If Whole Foods isn't building at Pinecrest, and unsure if they are (Rumors say no... And the plastic sheeting recently pu  on Woodmere store's ceiling + recent avacancy in adjacent storefront/lack of building on WFoods site yet at Pinecrest = are they remodeling? As regular shopper - I hope not ! I want a new store, but a smaller, sleeker Macy's could bring a draw at Pinecrest... Or a moderately uoscale/midsized Von Maur!

Certainly a new building at Beachwood place would bring in more of the demographic that they are seeking, as it seems to have faded from the UH location.  So yeah if they wanted to keep one location on the east side that didn't include Mentor, this would be the thing to do, yet I don't see it happening.

Speaking of Pinecrest, did construction ever resume?  If not I'm seriously wondering if it will happen.

They are replacing a culvert at the south end of Brainard at Cannon, so it's possible they ran into drainage issues.

Pinecrest construction in full swing

Lots of big yellow machines! A crane on site now. Leveling.... Digging. Wall making...

Could Woodmere become one of their lower stores

i think Whole Foods Woodmere could become a WF 365 store, yes - with new store at Pinecrest

I commented on Whole Foods 365 in the Akron thread. I was skeptical when the Akron store was changed from a regular WF to a 365, but I went to the new 365 in LA (the first) and was very pleasantly surprised. I hope the Cleveland area gets one as well.

whats the different between Whole Foods and 365--is 365 a mini version?

Whole Foods' (sort of) version of Trader Joe's is how a 365 a store has been described. However, these stores are much larger than a TJ's (30K square feet, the size of the current Woodmere Whole Foods, vs pehaps 10-15K square feet for a TJ's)... and have much more of a selection, with slant towards lower price point and fewer frills than  regular WF store. Having them near a full line Whole Foods store is their plan, just like Rack stores are near full line Nordstrom stores.

Much of the roof of the former LaPlace/Beachwood Borders (and roof/walls of the entire middle/front of the center) is now removed (big crane there to do it)... Still not a word out/sign up to note what's coming - but these are big changes. #ContainerStore

Also - vertical construction appears to have begun at Pinecrest in Orange... though the website has finally changed to say "Opening 2018" instead of 2017...

The way things are going they are going to have to announce sooner you'd think rather than latter.

  • 2 weeks later...

After a seven year absence, Z Gallerie is coming back to NE Ohio at Legacy in the old bookstore space. Set to open November of this year.

Interesting... They have already reopened in Columbus. This space will be the part of the former Joseph-Beth, facing the interior of Legacy, that was not taken up by Granite City when it opened.

Yea, it looks like they're going back into a lot of their previous markets. There are quite a few stores coming soon in the next few months. Crocker doesn't look to be part of them.

I worked at Macy's up until my store closed in march. They won't be opening any downtown stores soon. In fact, I would expect only SF, NYC and Chicago to have the only downtown stores in 5 years. They've already put Seattle and Portland's up for sale, and are rumored to put up Minneapolis'.

And Chicago is most likely losing the famous Macy's at the Marshall Field's building. The one on Michigan Avenue is staying put.

.

Maybe I am misremembering, but wasn't there a Container Store at Eton a few years back? The article from Beachwood.com says "The Container Store, a specialty national retailer offering creative home and office storage solutions, will open its first Northeast Ohio location in the spring of 2017 at La Place in Beachwood" but I swear there was a store at Eton in Woodmere on Chagrin road.

"Organized Living" was the short-lived chain that had an Eton store a decade ago.

Based on the striped awning design and the stated goal of a potential Beachwood store as their first entry in the CLE market, the tenant in the former Sushi Rock space on the bottom left front corner of La Place (bottom and middle images) may be Corner Bakery (a better, Panera-like fast casual spot)

You called the Container store at Laplace ehf.  I saw the new build over the weekend and thought it had to be a container store given the shape and size.  Yes the awnings do look like Corner Bakery which I think I recall they were trying to enter this market.  In DC they were nice to have as they didn't have many "real" bakery's there.  But even here they will be an ok option to have.

Am I misremembering, or wasn't the Container Store originally going to go into the new development being built in Orange?  It seems they have lost a couple anchor tenants.

You are correct... Leasing very competitive right now among Eton, Pinecrest, Beachwood, Legacy... Container Store was on early leasing plans for Pinecrest, at Harvard and 271. They have also backed out of two leases at Legacy Village over the years, I was told, including an announced CLE debut at Legacy opening back in 2003... (along with Fleming's, which ended up at Eton...)

Wait, so which space would be Coastal Taco then?

No Coastal Taco happening now at LaPlace... per comments by owner Rick Doody, who owns Cedar Creek at LaPlace, too.He said GGP went a different direction...

Oh ok.  I was just reading the planning minutes from earlier in the summer where Doody was seeking approval for CT.  Things certainly keep changing at all of these sites.

Coastal has still been listed as a pending matter in Beachwood planning... but is off...

I wonder if the issues with the Flats location are a factor. While it seems to always be crowded, the reviews are mostly terrible.

Here is info on Coastal taco from an article in me about the opening of the flats locationn.  another article I read back then noted that it was the center owner ggp decision not to proceed with the restauranteurs.

"While there was talk of a La Place Center location for Coastal Taco, Doody says that deal is dead. But if all goes as planned, taco fans on both sides of town might soon see one of these in their own neighborhoods.

“We would do one east and one west fairly quickly,” says Doody. “We try to keep it rolling.”

Yes! I was so excited when I saw the news story today for the Container Store. I practically ran back into work to tell all my coworkers lol. I've had so much fun at this store when I go down to Nashville.

Van Aken project may muck this up even more

Lol didn't know the Container Store was that big of a deal. Also surprised Cle didn't have one before. There has been one in Cincy for a long time.

Oh it certainly is when you have minor OCD about organization and love shopping  :-D

With regards to a city like Cincinnati having a Container Store years before Cleveland:

It's sometimes funny how things work in retail. It's all about the right location and timing and  other factors coming together at the right time... Sometimes there is great interest (IKEA started looking in Cleveland for a site at least 15+ years ago... but still no store....):

Cleveland had a Nordstrom store a dozen years before Cincinnati and several years before Columbus - and Crate&Barrel opened in Cleveland in 2003 - but not in Cincinnati until 2008 (and Columbus 2004). Cincinnati had a Tiffany store 15 years before Cleveland did -  and a decade before Columbus, but Cleveland had a Saks store 2 decades before Columbus and 5 years before Cincy, etc, etc, etc....

Does anyone know what they are building behind the Costco over that way? (Beachwood/east side). Asking for an E side friend.

Ashley Furniture going next to Costco.

^they've been there for years. finally being priced out of the neighborhood?

It always seems busy.  I have to imagine that space won't stay empty for long.
