January 15, 20187 yr Yea Bloomingdales expanding seems like a reach given Macy's issues over the last few years, but that area has great demographics, full of people that could and would be able to afford to shop there. I agree with the police/security presence at beachwood. Was there a few weeks ago and they were noticeably visible. It's a shame it has to be that way, but it is what it is.
January 15, 20187 yr i agree it's a shame Beachwood Place has such visible security to keep teenagers from making this a nighttime gathering spot. At the same time, they have a serious investment to protect - one that's been tainted via interior and exterior fights and crime - and if this keeps them out of the headlines and makes these events less likely to happen - and some customers feel more comfortable visiting, well...

January 28, 20187 yr I'm hearing that Steak n' Shake that opened up sometime last year I think at Oakwood Commons in South Euclid closed. That was REAL quick. Anyone know what happened? It would appear that this was a franchised location (fairly uncommon for them) - not a corporate one - with horrible word of mouth/reviews. Franchise operators certainly have been known to get in over their heads at times.

Franchise operators certainly have been known to get in over their heads at times. A few people I know personally gave it terrible reviews regarding the service. What does corporate do in a situation like this? Take it over an operate it properly, or just let the she'll rot until another probably fast food operator comes along and remodels?
January 28, 20187 yr The franchisee ran into difficulties - they had no prior restaurant experience at all before opening this. It shut down over the holidays. The city has been in contact with both corporate, and First Interstate. The plan is for corporate to take over and reopen, though there are numerous legalities to work through, and currently no time frame for it. They still view the location as viable, it just had bad management.

February 1, 20187 yr Dominos Pizza is open downtown on Prospect just east of the intersection with Huron near Chicago's Chicken and Waffles. #BuyLocal I know, but people on here used to cry about us not having enough chains downtown. Well here you go, Dunkin opens second downtown store and Dominos pops up out of nowhere within weeks of each other!
February 1, 20187 yr I prefer local but chains downtown help create a 24/7 city since they are usually open 7 days a week and often open late

February 1, 20187 yr I like a mix of local and chain. We have that in Lakewood and it seems to work fine.

Well here you go, Dunkin opens second downtown store and Dominos pops up out of nowhere within weeks of each other! All the East Coast urban centers have plenty of chains. What's the big deal? My local independently owned Chinese place has a much worse health inspection record than the local Panda Express. "Buy local" isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

I made the #buylocal comment tongue-in-cheek
February 1, 20187 yr It's not about the health inspections haha. Chains destroy food culture. I used to work near the Polaris area in Columbus if you guys know it. Plenty of decent places to eat but it's just so dull and uninspired after a while. We would go travel to rural Ohio towns for work and there'd always be interesting random local places to eat because the chains hadn't crowded them out. It's good for Downtown Cleveland to get chains, and they aren't going to put the local restaurants out of business. It's really the suburbs where chains just suck the life out of the place.
February 1, 20187 yr ^ Hey Burger King & BP 7/11 are already there. Burger King is sooo close to W117 it doesn't count. Neither do gas stations lol. Plus BP is arguably local in the eyes of some elderly people. In the attempt to get a little more on topic, a Buddhist Teaching Center just opened on Madison in Lakewood. Plus I have had my eye on the interesting renovation of this place. Because of the recent addition of building security measures, my wild, unsupported speculation is a med marijuana related business. If anyone wants to chime in with actual info I'd appreciate it.
February 1, 20187 yr Trust me, I prefer for Madison to remain the quirky and local commercial street.
February 16, 20187 yr In the entertainment retail Restaurant realm Topgolf Cleveland will be opening in Independence in 2019

February 19, 20187 yr Balani Custom Clothiers expanding made-to-measure menswear in Cleveland Christian Boehm, the Houston-based president of Balani, says Tinter's ability to cultivate relationships with his clients and understand how they like to dress has helped Balani's sales grow 117 percent to more than $7.3 million over the past three years. "We hire people with big personalities, because that really transfers," Boehm said. Stylists like Tinter help clients find the best color, fit and pattern and stay current on clothing trends. Not a small feat when suits start at $899, and jackets at $699. Boehm, a Toledo native who spent nearly two decades in Northeast Ohio, said Balani is so optimistic about Cleveland's appetite for luxury custom menswear that it is opening a spacious by-appointment-only showroom at 600 Superior Ave. in mid-April. From professional athletes and small businessmen, "it's a fantastic market for custom clothing," he said. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/02/balani_custom_clothiers_expand.html

February 22, 20187 yr Sausalito on Ninth to open Feb. 26 in new location Sausalito on Ninth will be opening its doors Monday, Feb. 26, in its new space not far from its longtime home in Erieview at Galleria in downtown Cleveland. The restaurant, an original tenant in the Galleria dating to 1987, has a long list of changes coming up for the short move. Its previous name was Cafe Sausalito. The new focus will be locally sourced food and handcrafted cocktails in its new street-level digs on East Ninth Street in the IMG building. In conjunction, "Penthouse on Ninth" - a new private-dining venue - will open on the 15th floor and seat as many as 100 people with downtown views. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/sausalito_on_ninth_to_open_feb.html
February 25, 20187 yr Looks as if the Camera City (806 Huron Rd), in the Caxton Building, is now empty. That has to be a niche business now that so many people have a 10MP plus camera in their pockets, and niche businesses probably don't need that expensive of a location (plus factor in parking).
February 28, 20187 yr The poke craze hits downtown Cleveland at 2nd and High In coastal big cities like New York and Los Angeles, poke places can be found on almost every block, but here in Cleveland, notsomuch. That’s about to change, starting with 2nd and High Poke House + Bar—the new incarnation of downtown's 2nd and High Social House. “We wanted an identifiable food concept to pair along with our cocktails, and poke is trending across the States right now,” says owner Matthew Wyrick. “It’s sexy, it’s trendy, it’s very healthy. You can’t get this anywhere else [in Cleveland].” The change coincides with the bar-slash-restaurant’s one-year anniversary, with a new menu that debuted on February 10. All selections are now dairy- and gluten-free, with special attention to Paleo, vegetarian, and vegan options—a far cry from the bar fare it used to offer (such as wings, fried fish, and burgers). "This is what sets us apart from the Harry Buffalos and other bars in town," says Wyrick. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/street-level/2ndandhigh021418.aspx
March 9, 20187 yr yeah poke joints opened on every block out here but that craze has passed and many have closed. i certainly like sushi and sashimi and all that but i never took to poke bowls. i dont think it translates well outside of hawaii. its not bad or anything though and you can make your own, so its kind if fun and it can be healthy if you are careful. btw i would say the latest foodie craze is vegan this and vegan that.
April 1, 20187 yr The 15 Ohio counties with the most (and 15 counties with the least) grocery stores per 1,000 people The United States Department of Agriculture tracks the number of grocery stores in every county in the United States and compares those figures to the population of those counties using the latest census figures. Using the USDA’s most recent data from 2014, we came up with the 15 counties that boast the most grocery stores per 1,000 people, and the 15 that have the least per 1,000 people. The government agency defines a grocery store as a supermarket with a variety of departments and products, disqualifying small convenience stores and gas stations that sell snacks. # 13. Cuyahoga Population: 1,280,122 Grocery stores: 294 Stores per 1,000 people: .23 Just because Cuyahoga County is high on this list doesn't mean that everyone here has easy access to a grocery store. Cleveland, for example, has a number of food deserts, and research suggests that a significant portion of the city's population is food insecure. A map of the county's food deserts (which are defined as low income areas in which the majority of residents live at least a half-mile from a grocery store or supermarket) compiled by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission found that such deserts are clustered in neighborhoods like St. Clair-Superior, Old Brooklyn, Glenville, Collinwood, Hough, Fairfax and Cudell. Even suburbs like Bedford and Cleveland Heights have food deserts. "The lack of supermarket is litmus test for inequity," said Case Western Reserve University Associate Professor Darcy Freedman, whose research involves reducing inequity through healthier communities. "It doesn't just mean you don't have a supermarket, it means you don't have the infrastructure to support one." Around 61 percent of Cleveland lives below 200 percent of the federal poverty rate, which qualifies them for food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Freedman said. Cuyahoga County's low income residents are often "underpaid and underemployed," Freedman said. "And with many of the jobs available, even if you work full time you would not have enough money to support your family and cross the threshold" of 200 percent of the federal poverty level. According to data from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, 456,000 county residents live more than a half-mile from a supermarket, and 193,000 live more than a mile from one. That distance is particularly vexing for the elderly and people who don't own cars, said Roger Sikes, a program manager for the Creating Health Communities program at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.
April 6, 20187 yr From Crain's... H&M is looking for a space for its first store in downtown Detroit, sources say https://t.co/aaxqZlPyg2 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 7, 20187 yr I'm shocked the H&M news out of Detroit hasn't caused a near-riot here on UO. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 7, 20187 yr ^^ For me, a Uniqlo would get me agitated. H&M, not so much. My hovercraft is full of eels
April 7, 20187 yr Maybe if there was some indication that this was an H&M corporate strategy to open locations in the Downtowns of rustbelt cities, but otherwise its probably idiosyncratic. Really I'd rather this thread stay for actual news relating to Cleveland retail.
April 7, 20187 yr True. I succumbed to catering to the mob here, which loves a good make-a-wish retail story. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
