^ Someone was shot there recently in the middle of the day so it's fair to say there is a security problem. That was after a stampede of kids(who thought they heard gunshots)caused a lock down the day after Christmas. It was also after a fistfight between 2 girls in the food court made the rounds on social media.

As someone who lives near Beachwood Place and still shops there I believe security combined with increased competition is the reason for the mall''s struggles. Why deal with the safety issues when you have multiple alternatives nearby? Also going there after the shooting was like shopping in a prison. They had multiple armed sheriff deputies with bulletproof vests standing at each entrance. Not very inviting!

It could be the safest place on Earth but if it's perceived as unsafe that's all that really matters.

^ Good news. It's ridiculously hard to send a package if you live downtown without getting into a car.

There are 3 post offices in downtown center?

Post Office? Never heard of it.

FedEx Office at 9th & Chester?

Maybe I've just had bad luck. I wanted to send an Amazon return back via ups and had to go all the way to Uptown (though now the Amazon location on Euclid has made that easier) and all the post offices are closed Saturdays which is when I'd usually do it.

Does anyone know what’s going in the old Williams Sonoma next to Cedar Creek at Laplace??  I am assuming on the other side of Cedar Creek is the sister restaurant that is being talked about but maybe it’s just the opposite ??

Diamonds Direct. A fast growing chain which has a store at Polaris. And yes, The Lake House is being built on the other side.

Ok ty

there is some weird stuff going on with mattress firm, they spent too much buying up competition, the rumor they are a money laundering operation, bankruptcy issues and ??? — meanwhile online mattress retailers like most notably caspar are steadily opening stores and cutting in on their business. unlike stodgy mattress firm, caspar especially markets to young people well.

i notice a lot of the millenials that move in and out like to buy caspar (its always caspar) and then just chuck these practically new mattresses in the trash when they move instead of taking it. its so wasteful and sad.

What in the world does this have to do with Cleveland? Mattress Firm is based in Houston.

I've never heard of Casper, but it sounds like Ron Traczinczki at 4930 State Road (right at the 480 ramp) had all this figured out decades ago.

^ i know it seems like they came out of nowhere. apparantly online mattress businesses like caspar are making an especially huge dent in brick and morter businesses. i had no idea there was such an upheaval in that business because it seems like the kind of thing where you want to go to the shop to try them out in person not get one online.

what in the world is right — there are massive changes going on in the retail industry, apparantly even including mattresses. who knew? there is at least one mattress firm outlet in steelyard and of course others.

You can still try a mattress out in a store and then buy it online elsewhere like this:

Warby Parker is one of the hottest things in retail right now, and I was noticing how Cleveland's will be opening in suburban Pinecrest, yet Columbus and Cincinatti both have their stores in Urban Locations (Short North and Over-the-Rhine).  Cincinatti is also getting a Bonobos in the same location.  Too bad we cant get any retail downtown...

I think they'd do well in Tremont or Ohio City - ideally right next to or across from Geiger's downtown. Make that strip a destination

Where's the dislike button?

At least Cleveland is getting a Bonobos at Van Aken... thats better  :D It's a bit ridiculous that we have about 17 "shopping districts" spread out so when a new retailer comes its a wildcard to where it will go

I know it was an innocent mistake, but it's 1 T and 2 Ns in Cincinnati. If you have trouble remembering, you can think of the public anti-litter campaign "don't trash the 'Nati."

interestingly i think, warby, bonobos and caspar mattresses all started out as online businesses and are now opening up brick and mortar shops. its a bit of a rebound from all the moving to online retail you see and hear about.

If I still posted here I'd say: "Van Aken way behind schedule. Shinola rep confirmed directly to me that they have pushed back planned 2018 opening due to delays and are now planning on opening 'in Cleveland' sometime in 2019 from originally announced 2017. A big miss for Van Aken - which has not publicly commented yet on the extended timing... Shinola may have a pop up store for 2018 somewhere in CLE he said. Will Shinola bail for Pinecrest or ? due to Van Aken lack of progress? Will others?"

I've assumed it's true for all of them, but the Warby Parker and Bonobos "stores" I've been to are just showrooms, with no inventory. A good model if your only sell your own line of products, so you don't need to worry about being a showroom for Amazon.

It's also the kind of thing you don't really want to lug home.

Rash of closings in Playhouse Square;

First to go, a couple of months back, was Raving Med. Shame, as I liked the place and ate there often. However, Zaytoon came along doing pretty much the same thing, but way better.

Otto Mosers - I know this place had authentic history in it's old location, but I only ever ate there once and thought it was nothing more than dive-bar food, served by surly waitstaff.

Play Salon on East 14th. Not a surprise, only ever saw people in there on a Saturday morning.

M Lang clothiers. This place always baffled me. I'm somewhat of a clothes-horse and although the stuff there wasn't really my style, I did a couple of times try to go inside to take a look. As far as I could tell, the doors were always locked and you had to call and make an appointment, at their convenience, to actually go inside and look at things. I've seen that business model work at very exclusive and expensive small clothiers in places like Milan and London, but in Cleveland with merchandise that was nice, but not *that* nice, it never seemed like a good idea to me.

Those last three have all gone pretty much overnight in the last 10 days or so. Coincidence, or is something afoot?

Raving Med has been closed for quite a while.  It was a good concept but poorly run.  I never understood the appeal of Otto Moser either.

^M Lang baffled me too. The only places downtown that can survive on that sort of model is Balani and Joseph Scafidi

That's too bad about M Lang. I've looked in the window myself and decided to check the place out one day. If i saw something I liked, I certainly would have bought it if reasonably priced. I was certainly interested enough to go instead after looking at the window. But then, at the door, I saw you had to buzz to get in and said 'screw that' and kept on walking.

Meanwhile, that sketchy suit salesman on Euclid is still open. I thin they sell recycled suits and sport coats after Pimps retire and donate them

YABO713 - That is so funny.  I can't stop laughing because its so true!  Who buys this stuff?

After I didn't go to MLang I hit that shop on Euclid and bought a whole rack of suits for just $799!  (just kidding)

Zaytoon (and Boaz in OHC, I could eat Boaz every day) is much better than Raving Med, I won't miss it.

Bought a few things from M Lang before, too bad he's closing up.

Otto Moser's was not good food, it's not surprising that it's going away with all the extra competition these days.

I think that place on Euclid got a job lot of stock in a fire sale in about 1983 and is still working their way through it. I went in there once and walked out with a pair of plain blue dress socks. Literally the only thing they sell that isn't badly dated.

My hovercraft is full of eels

^ wait, do you mean that my lime green double breasted suit is out dated?

Not in the Justice Center.

So is there much of anything in terms of restaurants or retail left in Playhouse Square given these closures? I remember going over to PHS on a couple visits to Cleveland thinking there would be a bunch of places to eat and being shocked at how little there was. Given the abundance of theaters in the area, I thought it pretty weird that there really were maybe 2 restaurants around. Where do people go before and after seeing shows? Hopefully the new tower will help give this area some more life, but I seem to recall it lacks a ground floor retail presence, right?

, but I seem to recall it lacks a ground floor retail presence, right?

No, it has one, but only after planning commission pushed for it.

^Good to see that change! I think PHS is my favorite part of downtown Cleveland from a built environment perspective. Just needs some more foot traffic and ground level retail. I bet as CSU becomes more of a residential campus, that will help a bit with pedestrian activity in this part of downtown, too.

Is this the place you guys are talking about? I walk by there regularly but have never really noticed it, I am oblivious sometimes. I will have to check it out next time.

That’s the one!

Looks like two independent spots are closing shop (one going online only) - Tremont General Store is closing after Halloween, and today is the last day Love, Anji (paper florist and home decor) will have a physical storefront in the 5th Street Arcades.

It was mentioned in another thread, but Jack Flaps Luncheonette is currently closed.  According to their Facebook page, they are reopening, though.

Due to some technical difficulties our Downtown location is on a short hiatus. We will keep you informed of its reopening in the next few days. In the meantime please stop into our Ohio city location, it is just over the bridge. Thank you for your patience and continued support.
