It's nice to see those dummies know how to overextend themselves like any good AMERICAN company. I'm sure it'll be easy to find it next to Claire's and across the way from Chic-Fil-A

From the November Coventry Times:

Marc's will open its new store in December.  The grand opening will take place on December 5th.

There's apparently a new music venue on the second floor of the Centrum called the Coventry Stage... anyone been?

Bad news: Brooks Bros. is vacating its (large) space in Tower City in April. No one yet lined up to take their place.

wow...how did you find out?  Is this 100% confirmed or a ploy by BB to negotiate a better lease?

^Negotiate a better lease? Oh that's a hoot! I'm sure as with J. Crew and all the other departed stores, the Tower City rep (of FCE) will say "we aren't aware of any plans for them to leave". I kid you not, their manager said to Crains that she had no idea that J. Crew had any intentions of relocating to Crocker Park.

I can't say I'm surprised - you have Tower City in decline (compared to what it used to be), and in general people aren't wearing suits any where near what they used to. Too bad though - I know it was a nice amenity for those who used it.

Well thats what I mean.  FCE says one thing..the leaseholder another.

I've never been a brooks brothers fan.  But I'm sad at longtime store is closing

Maybe Stark can pick them up in the WHD.

in 2012???  This is really crappy...

on the other hand, YSOH pointed out to me that this would be an ideal space for an H&M, which is what the kids want these days anyway...

SOME kids.  they want lucky, diesel, puma, Banana Republic, Kenneth Cole, A&F, & Zara and Urban Brands still rake in the millions with very little marketing or co-pay advertising.

TowerCity should be doing everthing in its power to retain the stores it has and add store like the ones above.  But of course...they will sing the doom and gloom song!

^Some kids still have to wear boring Brooks Brothers type stuff to work.

Looks like my annual post x-mas shirt purchase wasn't enough to save the store, go figure.  What crap news this is- that pretty store cast a nice classy shadow on that end of the complex.

The only workers downtown these days are lawyers and bankers it seems, which I would think would need suits.  That was the niche that I thought was keeping the holdouts of Ann Taylor/Brooks Bros/Johnston & Murphy/MAC in TC??

This is bad news for TC!! That was such a nice spot, although I agree, an H&M would fit in there perfectly..... Too bad they are "saturated" around here to say the least. All they need is a Summit Mall store in Akron before they become the new Gap.

I'm 25, and I am not a fan of Brooks Brothers suits. When people my age wear them, I feel like they are giving off the "Look at me, I'm powerful" vibe. If I had any money, I'd opt with something from DKNY. I prefer something a bit more slimming... But, anyway.......................

I know its been mentioned, but "hardy har har" again.

1) J. crews lease somehow had to do with store revenues per sq ft in addition to a typical sq ft rate.

2) the former disney store (now wilsons leather?) had the second highest lease/sq ft. outside of manhattan. Ouch.

(the aforementioned is only hearsay and cannot be confirmed  by me)

Furthermore, Brooks Brothers does not equal power suit. Its decent business wear, and a nice option if your company gets you a discount there, but other than that, big whoop.

^^ I was talking about the look/cut of a BB suit not the actual quality. I think it looks ostentatious ond old-fashioned on young men.

If I had all the money in the world, I'd fly to London, etc., etc.

Oh Dear....you poor misguided fashion victim.......  8-) :| 8-) come closer to the light.....

H&M' is the new gap.  It overtook, Armani Exchange in that category.

Remember this if you remember nothing else!  Brooks Brothers does not say "power suit".  Prada, Hermes, Valentino, Boss, Alexander McQueen (love his new man bag!!), Lacroix, Paul Smith and on occasion, Gucci scream "power".  Brooks Brothers says, "I'm a westside/New Jersey bore stuck in the 80's - help!"

PS...ditch the DKNY and pick up a mens vogue!

You guys are misunderstanding me....

I'm not saying a BB suit *IS* a power suit. I'm saying it's the suit that people my age wear when they think they are powerful. They look like the boss from Office Space with the white collar and patterned shirt, etc. When i see a kid wearing one of those things, I think "MMmmmm, yeah.... Didja get the memo? We're going to happy hour at Chilis... Mmmhkk?" Like we're going to hit it and talk about our 401Ks or my lack thereof.

I don't like Men's Vogue....I'm more of an Esquire reader...

To me, Brooks Brothers says "I hate playing dress up for the Man's game so I'm going to be as lazy and unimaginative as possible and just go across the street to get my non-iron dress shirts when they are on sale.  PS, I'm not gay."  Perhaps I flatter myself?

jamiec, try the slim fit: much more slimming than the voluminous "traditional" cut.

Anyhow, there is officially no place left downtown that I can see myself spending any retail $.  Very sad.

EDIT: jamiec- I share your hatred of those white collar over patterned shirt shirts.

And exactly where are these people from?

Esquire...eh, its ok.  Thank goodness you didn't say GQ!

All power suits are bought from the Men's Warehouse.  I guaranteeeee it ;)

That thought scares me!

I'm so glad I don't  have to wear a suit to work. So so glad.

"The only workers downtown these days are lawyers and bankers it seems, which I would think would need suits."

Not like they used to - it seems that business casual is the standard, unless people are meeting with clients.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay TMI!

Pope you need to find another "office" to work out of, instead of The Leather Stallion.  :behind:

Unless, that is the niche you cater too.

MyTwoSense is one of your clients?!?

OK Judas!  Remember this!  LOL

I hope and pray your SO a) wants LOTS AND LOTS of kids!  b) you ruin your figure in the process and are never able to find at pair of $4.98 pants EVA again!

I may be walking into a hornet's nest here, but speaking of Gap -- the Tower City National City Bank has a 30% off coupon on the table just inside their lobby that applies to their already on-sale items as well.. I got a $50 vneck for $20 yesterday. Even if you don't like the clothes you could pick up some decent cheap underwear or a hat or something. Good through Sunday.

Geez, how bad do you think we are?  Crucify him, he supported downtown retail!!

Yeah I guess that's true.  It seems like the gen x and y are dressing a little nicer though....at least more dress pants and shirts.  Baby boomers took golf shirts, pleated docker Khakis and tassle loafers way too far. Ugh!

I guess BB is stuck in the middle somewhere.  It's too bad, that was a nice space.

OH NO...those stores are more like "R.A.G." stores.  Which sell lower quality merchandise than H&M!

Just not my cup of tea!

I like to dress well, but I've got to be honest, 90% of the reason I try to dress nice is to impress women my age, specifically the classy girls.

In all reality, I need a girl with MTS' fashion expertise to help me, though. Or at least go with me to the store because that can turn into a big disaster when I go by myself, especially when considering suits. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm workin' on finding that girl....

At least I'm not walking around dressed like Ted Nugent.

We'll that girl would have to be one diva cause MyTwoSense is one desinger wearing bitch!  MTS doesn't know what the meaning of "dress down"  lol

MTS' closet is larger than my bedroom and looks like the uptown Barney's outlet, so your wanna be fashion expert better know her shit!

  • 2 weeks later...

if anyone really cares, the new Marc's in Coventry is open.

for a marks it doesn't look bad, and after the facade "improvements" it certainly looks better than the old medic

^I thought the same when I was there last weekend.  I very rarely spend time in Conventry, but I didn't think it was too shabby at all.

whaaat? uniqlo has much better quality clothing than old "instant wrinklely paper shirt" h&m. by far. get with the green cha!

ok then, howz about this? mexx is another banana republic/j. crew style store chain i like lately. it's euro. it would go over great in tc too. they have excellent quality shirts (ie., thick material), it's better than banana, and they have great sales too:

I know H&M isn't making stuff designed to outlast a nuclear meltdown, but are people seriously having that much trouble with what they're buying there?  Same thing with [sub-]Urban Outfitters... People complain about that stuff all the time!  Thing is, I worked at UO for nearly two years and people rarely returned things for this reason.  I also own clothing from H&M that I purchased as much as 7 years ago and I'm still looking fly without any tatters, tears or unplanned holes.  What's up with the whiney whiney people?

^They're just being garden variety b!tchy queens, with a pinch of materialistic classism.

I'm with you - I have some pricier stuff from a few splurges and I have some H&M/UO stuff (and some vintage) and everything has held up quite well. You don't go to places like that for a head to toe ensemble, but for some basics or everyday - there's nothing wrong with them.

that not necessarily true.  You guys can buy right of the rack go home and wear it.  When you buy something, I would guess, you rarely need alterations.  Almost everything I buy, regardless of the retailer, has to be altered.  Its even difficult to just "run out" and buy a pair of jeans.

Buying clothes at 6'1' and under is so different than buying clothes when you're 6'4".  im slim  in the waist and broad in the shoulders.  My brother & cousin are 6'6", my other cousin is 6'8", they have a harder time than me.

You guys don't understand how good you have it!

they want you to think that because it still is european. the site say the corporate center is in netherlands and the design center in amsterdam. makes sense as it was a dutch company -- true liz now owns it.

i mean its great its owned by an american firm, but ownership doesnt matter, its just a great casual wear store.

oh please. i said the exact same thing about h&m and look what happened, one opened and now you are a fan. lol!

also, what you dont know is uniqlo clothes are exactly as cheap as h&m. except generally they use better material and are better constructed. if you have found you like h&m you'd like it too.

i am just suggesting stores for tc that are new to the region and state. and are maybe unique enough to be a draw on their own.

Uhhh, I've shopped at H&M before they opened in Greater Cleveland. Anyway, I wasn't directing my comments at anyone in particular. Speaking of Tower City - I stopped in at Papyrus and they looked like they were closing - 70% off sale, and about 80% of the shelves were empty with no restocking in sight.

Uhhh, I've shopped at H&M before they opened in Greater Cleveland.

uhhh, ok sure, but you havent shopped at uniqlo or mexx and their clothes are better made for the same price -- they would go over as well as h&m. the bigger point is tc needs to set itself apart somewhat to rebound as a mall and to do that i'd say it needs somewhat more unique retail as a draw.

I''ve shopped at mexx - some of us do actually travel, you know.

Uniqlo's site annoyed me enough to have second thoughts of ever giving them a chance.

you shopped at mexx and you travel. so you like mexx but somehow dont think its right for cleveland area? hmm. if you like it enough to shop there why not? i think its a perfect fit.

you wont shop at uniqlo because of the website. yet you'll shop at h&m, etc., which are about the same store price and stylewise, but not qualitywise, not to mention which are not a potential unique draw to the region or tc? ok.
